Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Home Missionary Society in Relation to the Antislavery Controversy in the Old Northwest As already noted, the indentured service of Negroes had gained full legal status dur ing the territorial period of Illinois history. Although the Constitution of 1818 forbade slavery, yet no guarantee had originally been provided against its amendment so as to sanction its introduction at a later date.10 Self-seeking interests always stood ready to breach the state's constitutional provisions against slavery by taking advantage of the exposed geographical position of Illinois in relation to the bordering slave states of Kentucky and Missouri. Download or read book Children of Wrath written by Leo Hirrel and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an exciting reinterpretation of the early nineteenth century, Leo Hirrel demonstrates the importance of religious ideas by exploring the relationship between religion and reform efforts during a crucial period in American history. The result is a work that moves the history of antebellum reform to a higher level of sophistication. Hirrel focuses upon New School Congregationalists and Presbyterians who served at the forefront of reform efforts and provided critical leadership to anti-Catholic, temperance, antislavery, and missionary movements. Their religion was an attempt to reconcile traditional Calvinist language with the prevalent intellectual trends of the time. New School theologians preserved Calvinist language about depravity, but they incorporated an assertion of nominal human ability to overcome sin and a belief in the fixed, immutable nature of truth. Describing both the origins of New School Calvinism and the specific reform activities that grew out of these beliefs, Hirrel provides a fresh perspective on the historical background of religious controversies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mexican Protestantism was born in the encounter between Mexican Catholics and Anglo American Protestants, after the United States ventured into the Southwest and wrested territory from Mexico in the early nineteenth century. In Sea la Luz, Juan Francisco Martinez traces the birth and initial development of this ethno-religious community brought through the westward expansion of the United States. Using the records of Protestant missionaries, he uncovers the story of Mexican converts and the churches they developed. Those same records reveal Protestant attitudes toward the war with Mexico, the conquest of the Southwest, and the Mexican population that became U.S. citizens with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo (1848)."--BOOK JACKET.
