Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Peace River and Tributaries in 1891 As there was no practical benefit to my work to be obtained by going ahead of the canoe and awaiting its arrival at any point on my route, I remained in Ottawa until I learned that it was so far advanced that I would not be delayed on my way waiting for it. This occasioned my stay in Ottawa until the evening of 30th of June. I have thankfully to notice the action of the Canadian Pacific Railway authorities in this connection. I represented to Mr. Burgess, Deputy Minister, the urgent need of the canoe being hurried to its destination, more especially as I found it im possible after much inquiry to have it sent by express. Mr. Burgess requested the officers of the Company to give the matter their attention, which they kindly did, with such effect that the canoe was very little delayed on the way to Calgary. I reached Calgary on the morning of Sunday the 5th July. The following day was spent making preparations for departure on the daily construction train on the Calgary and Edmonton Railway, by which train I left on Tuesday morning. Late that evening the end of the track was reached. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Sprawling mansions and granite buildings from the past are still at the center of Peace Dale village life, but the town's history is more than just a tale of a privileged few. The legacy of the Irish and Italian immigrants who came to work in the mills and stayed to build a way of life is as important in the community today as the legacy left by the wealthy Hazard and Rodman families. Discover these early residents of Peace Dale in a remarkable collection of images, complemented by the text of author and local historian Betty J. Cotter. From Peace Dale's famous arched bridges to the mom-and-pop stores that ring Peace Dale Flats, this unprecedented collection explores the memories of yesteryear. The photographs date from the mid-nineteenth century to the 1960s and were gathered from the collections of the Pettaquamscutt Historical Society, the Peace Dale Library, and local residents.
Book Synopsis The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 by : Frederick Engels
Download or read book The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 written by Frederick Engels and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2014-02-12 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Condition of the Working Class in England is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle where before the introduction of mills (1779–1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five, and after their introduction the figure rose to 4,738. Before the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old, and after their introduction the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000.

Book excerpt: Includes over 30 maps and Illustrations The Staff Ride Handbook for the Vicksburg Campaign, December 1862-July 1863, provides a systematic approach to the analysis of this key Civil War campaign. Part I describes the organization of the Union and Confederate Armies, detailing their weapons, tactics, and logistical, engineer, communications, and medical support. It also includes a description of the U.S. Navy elements that featured so prominently in the campaign. Part II consists of a campaign overview that establishes the context for the individual actions to be studied in the field. Part III consists of a suggested itinerary of sites to visit in order to obtain a concrete view of the campaign in its several phases. For each site, or “stand,” there is a set of travel directions, a discussion of the action that occurred there, and vignettes by participants in the campaign that further explain the action and which also allow the student to sense the human “face of battle.” Part IV provides practical information on conducting a Staff Ride in the Vicksburg area, including sources of assistance and logistical considerations. Appendix A outlines the order of battle for the significant actions in the campaign. Appendix B provides biographical sketches of key participants. Appendix C provides an overview of Medal of Honor conferral in the campaign. An annotated bibliography suggests sources for preliminary study.
