The technical literature on Alaskan wetland vegetation, soils and hydrology is abundant, but the application of the literature to wetland management is poorly developed. This report identifies problems, issues and information gaps in the management of Alaskan wetlands. There are numerous arguments and debates on the designation, function and values, and disturbance of certain wetlands in Alaska. Permafrost, fire cycles and unique hydrologic regimes complicate the designation and delineation of Alaskan wetlands. The functions and values of most Alaskan wetlands clearly lie in their importance as habitat, particularly for migrating waterbirds, but an understanding of their role in flood water storage, water quality improvement, subsistence and other functions remains controversial and in need of study. Disturbance and other impacts on Alaskan wetlands is small relative to the large area that wetlands cover and in comparison with the loss of wetlands in the lower 48 states. However, several development projects in Alaska have affected large wetland areas and methods to restore these wetlands are being developed. Cumulative impacts are unknown, as are techniques for restoring permafrost wetlands containing gravel fill.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Her Friend Goes Missing, Every Minute Counts Darcy St. James returns to Alaska to join a journalist friend undercover on the trail of a big story. But when Darcy arrives, she finds her friend has disappeared. Troubled by the cruise ship's vague explanation, Darcy uses her cover as a travel reporter to investigate further. The last person Gage McKenna expects to see during his summer aboard a cruise ship leading adventure excursions is Darcy. And in typical Darcy fashion, she's digging up more trouble. He'd love to just forget her--but something won't let him. And he can't help but worry about her as they are heading into more remote regions of Alaska and eventually into foreign waters. Something sinister is going on, and the deeper they push, the more Gage fears they've only discovered the tip of the iceberg. "The third book in Pettrey's Alaskan Courage series ratchets up the action and suspense. It's difficult to stop yourself from peeking ahead to the end, but the ride is worth the anxiety." --RT Book Reviews "Dani Pettrey has delivered another incredibly compelling adventure in Alaska. STRANDED is full of suspense, beautiful rugged wilderness and white-water rapids, and a heartfelt romance. I loved catching up with the McKenna family." - Dee Henderson, New York Times bestselling author

Book excerpt: “Sarah Stewart Johnson interweaves her own coming-of-age story as a planetary scientist with a vivid history of the exploration of Mars in this celebration of human curiosity, passion, and perseverance.”—Alan Lightman, author of Einstein’s Dreams WINNER OF THE PHI BETA KAPPA AWARD FOR SCIENCE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • Times (UK) • Library Journal “Lovely . . . Johnson’s prose swirls with lyrical wonder, as varied and multihued as the apricot deserts, butterscotch skies and blue sunsets of Mars.”—Anthony Doerr, The New York Times Book Review Mars was once similar to Earth, but today there are no rivers, no lakes, no oceans. Coated in red dust, the terrain is bewilderingly empty. And yet multiple spacecraft are circling Mars, sweeping over Terra Sabaea, Syrtis Major, the dunes of Elysium, and Mare Sirenum—on the brink, perhaps, of a staggering find, one that would inspire humankind as much as any discovery in the history of modern science. In this beautifully observed, deeply personal book, Georgetown scientist Sarah Stewart Johnson tells the story of how she and other researchers have scoured Mars for signs of life, transforming the planet from a distant point of light into a world of its own. Johnson’s fascination with Mars began as a child in Kentucky, turning over rocks with her father and looking at planets in the night sky. She now conducts fieldwork in some of Earth’s most hostile environments, such as the Dry Valleys of Antarctica and the salt flats of Western Australia, developing methods for detecting life on other worlds. Here, with poetic precision, she interlaces her own personal journey—as a female scientist and a mother—with tales of other seekers, from Percival Lowell, who was convinced that a utopian society existed on Mars, to Audouin Dollfus, who tried to carry out astronomical observations from a stratospheric balloon. In the process, she shows how the story of Mars is also a story about Earth: This other world has been our mirror, our foil, a telltale reflection of our own anxieties and yearnings. Empathetic and evocative, The Sirens of Mars offers an unlikely natural history of a place where no human has ever set foot, while providing a vivid portrait of our quest to defy our isolation in the cosmos.

Book excerpt: WebJunction has just completed an update of the Competency Index for the Library Field. The original 2009 edition has been a valuable resource for libraries, helping staff identify and obtain the knowledge, skills and support needed to power relevant and vibrant libraries. However, it was time for an update. With ever-increasing economic, social, and educational demands, libraries have experienced dramatic changes in community needs and the tools available to serve those needs. Three elements in particular have been emphasized throughout: 21st century skills, accountability, and community engagement. WebJunction intends for the Index to be widely shared and adapted by a variety of libraries to meet their individual needs. -- Publisher description.
