Book Synopsis The Survey of Palestine Under the British Mandate, 1920-1948 by : Dov Gavish
Download or read book The Survey of Palestine Under the British Mandate, 1920-1948 written by Dov Gavish and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-01-28 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a historical study of the survey and mapping system of Palestine under the British Mandate. It traces the background and the reasoning behind the establishment of the survey programme, examines the foundations upon which the system was based, and strives to understand the motivation of those who implemented it. This study shows that the roots of the modern survey system of Palestine are to be sought in the Balfour Declaration and its implications regarding land in Palestine. The land issue was at the core of the mapping of Mandatory Palestine, and it remains as a core issue at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.

Book Synopsis Colonial Land Policies in Palestine 1917-1936 by : Martin P. Bunton
Download or read book Colonial Land Policies in Palestine 1917-1936 written by Martin P. Bunton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007-04-05 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Martin Bunton focuses on the way in which the Palestine Mandate was part of a broader British imperial administration - a fact often masked by Jewish immigration and land purchase in Palestine. His meticulous research reveals clear links to colonial practice in India, Sudan, and Cyprus amongst other places. He argues that land officials' views on sound land management were derived from their own experiences of rural England, and that this was far more influential onthe shaping of land policies than the promise of a Jewish National Home.Bunton reveals how the British were intent on preserving the status quo of Ottoman land law, which (when few Britons could read Ottoman or were well grounded in its legal codes) led to a series of translations, interpretations, and hence new applications of land law. The sense of importance the British attributed to their work surveying and registering properties and transactions, is captured in the efforts of British officials to microfilm all of their records at the height of the Second WorldWar. Despite this however, land policies remained in flux.
Book Synopsis A History of Modern Palestine by : Ilan Pappe
Download or read book A History of Modern Palestine written by Ilan Pappe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-07-24 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ilan Pappe's book traces the history of Palestine from the Ottomans in the nineteenth century, through the British Mandate, the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, and the subsequent wars and conflicts which have dominated this troubled region. The second edition of Pappe's book has been updated to include the dramatic events of the 1990s and the early twenty-first century. These years, which began with a sense of optimism, as the Oslo peace accord was being negotiated, culminated in the second intifada and the increase of militancy on both sides. Pappe explains the reasons for the failure of Oslo and the two-state solution, and reflects upon life thereafter as the Palestinians and Israelis battle it out under the shadow of the wall of separation. As in the first edition, it is the men, women and children of Palestine who are at the centre of Pappe's narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1923, The Truth about Mesopotamia, Palestine & Syria presents a comprehensive overview of what may be called the Arab or Middle Eastern problem in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Drawing from official publications and first-hand experience in the Middle East, J. de V. Loder discusses themes like the origins of the Arab movement; conditions in the Arab countries under Allied Occupation until the end of 1918; the activities of the Peace Conference and their repercussion in the Arab countries during 1919; Arab nationalism in Syria and Mesopotamia; and the relations between Arabs and Jews in Palestine. With a foreword by Lord Robert Cecil, this book is an important historical document and will be of interest to scholars and researchers of Middle East studies, British foreign policy, and international relations.
Book Synopsis Government and Society in Rural Palestine, 1920-1948 by : Ylana Miller
Download or read book Government and Society in Rural Palestine, 1920-1948 written by Ylana Miller and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, Arabs made up two-thirds of the population of Palestine, and they owned most of its cultivable land. Why then, did they "lose" their homes and land to a relatively small Jewish community just emerging from the shocks of World War II? Did the Palestinians "lose" their homeland because they were backward, primitive, and reactionary? Or was Israel the product of persistent victimization of Palestinian Arabs by an imperialist power which supported Zionist colonization? Did the Palestinians sell each other out? Or were they helpless sufferers in the face of a sophisticated enemy with endless resources? Too often discussions of Palestine are couched in such rhetorical language, based on the assumption that either Jews or Arabs are morally to blame for historical realities. This study seeks to go beyond attributions of responsibility to investigate the concrete conditions which determined and limited Palestinian Arab actions between 1920 and 1948. It was during that period, while Great Britain governed the area under a League of Nations mandate, that Palestine both emerged and disappeared as a modern political entity. Many studies of Palestinian Arab nationalism have looked to Zionism as the primary agent of change in the region. Miller assumes the impact of Jewish settlement but goes beyond these earlier studies to explore the way in which policies of the Palestine government affected the daily lives of villagers—the majority of the population—and their understanding of the changes occurring around them. In this way, what emerges is a detailed analysis of the influence, for good or ill, that government policy had on village community life. Based largely on archival sources never before used, this work allows the reader to gain a deeper appreciation of the internal life of the rural community, which had previously received relatively little attention. Understanding the experiences of Palestinians before 1948 helps us to comprehend immeasurably better the continuity of movements for Palestinian statehood as well as the continuing tensions and problems on the West Bank today.
