Download or read book Manuscripts in the National Library of Wales (Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru), Aberystwyth written by National Library of Wales and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1999 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The National Library of Wales was founded to preserve the material of the literary culture and history of Wales, hence the number of medieval English language manuscripts is relatively small, and the manuscript context for some English texts is one in which Welsh is the main language. The best known of the Middle English manuscripts in the NLW are Brogyntyn II.1 (Porkington 10) and the Hengwrt manuscript for Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales'; however, the collection has been little explored for its Middle English holdings, and of the manuscripts listed here fewer than half are included in the 'Index of Printed Middle English Prose'. They contain a wealth of materials, most notably in historical writings, scientific texts, and prophecies; among the texts not previously recorded are the 'Davies Chronicle' and a version of the 'Elucidarius'.'

Book Synopsis Cardiganshire County History Volume 2 by : Geraint H. Jenkins
Download or read book Cardiganshire County History Volume 2 written by Geraint H. Jenkins and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiganshire County History Volume 2 is published by the University of Wales Press on behalf of the Ceredigion Historical Society, in association with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. This volume provides a comprehensive and authoritative account, written by distinguished authors in fifteen chapters, of the wide range of social, economic, political, religious and cultural forces that shaped the ethos and character of the county of Cardiganshire over a period of 600 years. This was a period of great turbulence and change. It witnessed conquest and castle-building, the impact of the Glyndŵr rebellion, the coming of the Protestant Reformation, and the turmoil of civil war. Over time, the inhabitants of the county developed a sense of themselves as a distinctive people who dwelt in a recognisable entity. From very early on, literate people took pride in their native patch; in the eyes of the learned Sulien (d. 1091) and his sons, the land of Ceredig was a sacred patria. Poets and scribes burnished the reputation of the county, and a vibrant poem by Siôn Morys in 1577 maintained that it was the best of shires and ‘the fold of the generous ones’.

Book Synopsis Small Dictionaries and Curiosity by : John P. Considine
Download or read book Small Dictionaries and Curiosity written by John P. Considine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small Dictionaries and Curiosity tells a story which has not been told before, that of the first European wordlists of minority and unofficial languages and dialects, from the end of the Middle Ages to the early nineteenth century. These wordlists were collected by people who were curious about the unrecorded or little-known languages they heard around them. Between them, they document more than 40 language varieties, from a Basque-Icelandic pidgin of the North Atlantic to the Kalmyk language of the lower Volga. The book gives an account of about 90 of these dictionaries and wordlists, some of them single-page jottings and some of them full-sized printed books, paying attention to their content and their physical form alike. It explores the kinds of curiosity and imagination by which their makers were moved: the lover of all languages hearing new voices in an inn; the speaker of a dying language recording his linguistic memories; the patriot deploying his lexicographical findings in the service of an emerging nation. It offers an encounter with the diverse voices of the entirety of post-medieval Europe, turning away from the people of the courts and universities whose language was documented in big dictionaries to listen to people who did not speak the languages of power: the people of remote places and dying communities; the illiterate poor, settled or homeless; migrants from the edges of Europe and beyond.

Book Synopsis Prodesse et delectare by : Norbert Kössinger
Download or read book Prodesse et delectare written by Norbert Kössinger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Horatian formula prodesse et delectare was extremely influential in the production of texts across various languages and genres. While indeed didactic elements can be attested to in almost any medieval text, and while medieval literature displays a range of possibilities to teach and instruct, the scope of the present volume is more closely focused on explicitly didactic literature. This volume combines contributions that analyse didactic literature in high medieval Europe from different vantage points. They open new perspectives on education as a working principle or legitimizing strategy in the heterogeneous forms of writing intended to convey knowledge. This broad thematic, linguistic and geographical scope enables us to view didactic literature as the universal phenomenon it was and prompts us to understand its influence on many aspects of society in high medieval Europe and beyond. While the contributions explore case studies predominantly from this period of transition and the expansion of the categories of knowledge, they also trace some of these developments into the later Middle Ages to spotlight the lasting influence of high medieval teaching and learning in literature. The way medieval writers combine ‘the pleasant’ with ‘the useful’ is this book’s main question.
