Book Synopsis Violent Conservation: WWF’s Failure to Prevent, Respond to and Remedy Human Rights Abuses Committed on its Watch by : Lara Domínguez
Download or read book Violent Conservation: WWF’s Failure to Prevent, Respond to and Remedy Human Rights Abuses Committed on its Watch written by Lara Domínguez and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In April 2019, WWF appointed an Independent Panel of Experts to assess its role in connection with alleged human rights violations in and around protected areas supported by WWF in Cameroon, the Central African Republic (CAR), the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Republic of Congo, Nepal, and India. The alleged abuses included multiple instances of murder, rape, torture, physical beatings, unlawful arrest and detention, invasion of homes, and destruction and theft of personal property committed by ecoguards whose activities WWF helped fund and support. The Panel’s report, published in November 2020, found that in all the protected areas under review, WWF had knowledge of the alleged abuses. In half of these protected areas WWF failed to conduct investigations and in the remaining protected areas it only commissioned investigations several years after the alleged incidents were first reported. The Panel’s findings confirm that, over many years and in multiple countries, WWF consistently failed to take adequate steps to prevent, respond to and remedy alleged human rights abuses in and around protected areas it supports. Despite these clear findings, the Panel’s executive summary and accompanying press releases from both the Panel and WWF have obscured the scope and nature of the Panel’s findings with respect to WWF’s failure to uphold its human rights commitments. To counter this mischaracterization of the Report, the alternative executive summary contained in this briefing elucidates and clarifies the Report’s salient findings, based on a thorough review of what the Panel actually determined through the course of its investigation. In so doing, it points to some of the deeper structural reforms necessary to address the flaws in the coercive conservation model that lies at the root of the allegations subject to the Panel’s investigation.
Book Synopsis The Congo Wars by : Doctor Thomas Turner
Download or read book The Congo Wars written by Doctor Thomas Turner and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1996 war has raged in the Congo while the world has looked away. Waves of armed conflict and atrocities against civilians have resulted in over three million casualties, making this one of the bloodiest yet least understood conflicts of recent times. In The Congo Wars Thomas Turner provides the first in-depth analysis of what happened. The book describes a resource-rich region, suffering from years of deprivation and still profoundly affected by the shockwaves of the Rwandan genocide. Turner looks at successive misguided and self-interested interventions by other African powers, including Uganda, Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia, as well as the impotence of United Nations troops. Cutting through the historical myths so often used to understand the devastation, Turner indicates the changes required of Congolese leaders, neighbouring African states and the international community to bring about lasting peace and security.

Book Synopsis Human African Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness) by : Christian Burri
Download or read book Human African Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness) written by Christian Burri and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-06-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As it is a goal to eliminate human African trypanosomiasis (HAT; sleeping sickness) as a public health problem by 2020 and interrupt transmission by 2030, this is a good moment to reflect on what we have achieved, what we want to achieve, and what could get in our way. HAT has a reputation for spectacular reappearances, and the latest peak of 40,000 reported and over 300,000 estimated cases only dates back to 1998. Efforts of the WHO and partners as well as the development of simpler and much better-tolerated treatments, improved diagnostics, and vector control tools made it possible to reduce this number by 95%. Case identification and confirmation remain complex and require specific skills, treatment remains error-prone and reports on long-term survivors have emerged, and the relevance of the animal reservoir for T. b. gambiense HAT needs clarification. In addition, to win the “end game” against this massively stigmatized disease, the human factor will play a key role. This Special Issue addresses many of the burning topics about disease elimination in its 12 research and 7 review articles and one case study. The papers critically reflect the approaches used, investigate the mentioned challenges, and propose novel approaches and interventions from various points of view.

Book Synopsis International Refugee Law by : Hne Lambert
Download or read book International Refugee Law written by Hne Lambert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays selected and reproduced in this volume explore how international refugee law is dynamic and constantly evolving. From an instrument designed to protect mostly those civilians fleeing the worse excesses of World War II, the 1951 Refugee Convention has developed into a set of principles, customary rules, and values that are now firmly embedded in the human rights framework, and are applicable to a far broader range of refugees. In addition, international refugee law has been affected by international humanitarian law and international criminal law (and vice versa). Thus, there is a reinforcing dynamic in the development of these complementary areas of law. At the same time, in recent decades states have shown a renewed interest in managing migration, thereby raising issues of how to reconcile such interests with refugee protection principles. In addition, the emergence of concepts of participation and responsibility to protect promise to have an impact on international refugee law.
