Book Synopsis Biodiversity of Malaria in the world by : Manguin Sylvie

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the present time, malaria is responsible for a million deaths a year, with 500 million reported cases of the disease and 2.5 billion people at risk of contracting it. The distribution and severity of the disease vary with the causative agents, vectors and environment. Of the 4 possible parasites, only P. falciparum causes fatal forms; the three others have debilitating effects related to frequent disease recurrence and reviviscence. More than 50 species of anophele are involved in the obligatory transmission of the parasite from man to man. Climate, environment and biogeography condition the distribution of anophele species and modulate the intensity of transmission. This is what is known as the biodiversity of malaria. At the present time, more than 90% of P. falciparum malaria deaths occur in tropical Africa where only 10% of the world's population lives. A child dies of malaria every 30 seconds. This continent is home to the most effective vectors and the climate favours transmission. Severe cases also arise in the forested areas of South East Asia, New Guinea and the Amazon region. Throughout the rest of the tropical and subtropical world, the disease caused by P. vivax and/or P. malariae is less serious.

Download or read book Advancing Health in Developing Countries written by Lincoln C. Chen and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-06-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between social science research and public health policy, particularly in the developing world? This question is at the heart of this collection of essays drawn from Rockefeller Foundation-sponsored conferences at Harvard University. The book examines the theoretical impact of social science research as well as specific case studies of successful applied research. Beginning with a section on broad issues and the conceptualization of behavioral change, the volume then examines the anti-smoking movement in the United States; measures to prevent and control HIV infection in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the United States; anti-malaria measures; and the application of dietary management and lot quality assurance sampling to public health issues in Peru. The volume concludes with a section re-examining ways social science research can have an impact on improving public health. Scholars and researchers as well as policy makers involved with health research and international development will find this collection particularly valuable.

Book excerpt: This document is the report of a WHO technical consultation of independent experts convened in October 2022. The aim of the consultation was to conduct a formal evidence review of several studies evaluating the effectiveness of rectal artesunate (RAS) as a pre-referral treatment for severe malaria. In addition to the study published under the Community Access to Rectal Artesunate for Malaria Project, the review included other studies from early-use countries deploying RAS at the programmatic level. The main objective of the technical consultation was to support the development of guidance for the safe and effective implementation of this intervention based on the evidence from areas where RAS has already been implemented.
