Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time, interactive ship simulators limped onto the scene, in the wake of flight simulators, some years ago. The maritime industries have a long history of conservatism, but this is now changing rapidly. The information age has also swept over ships and shipping, and has been taken to heart to such an extent that, for example, flight simulators now cooperate with ship simulators and import useful new concepts and methodologies. The more than 50 papers contained in this book show what and why. Although traditionally conservative, the marine world is also traditionally international and this has not changed. The papers in the book are by leading authors from all over the world and provide a detailed snap-shot of the rapidly advancing state-of-the-art, together with pointers to the future. The overall theme of MARSIM '96 and therefore also of this book is: Vessel manouevrability and marine simulation research, training and assessment, and includes original papers on topics such as bridge resource management, distant learning and simulators coupled via The Internet, virtual reality, neural networks, rudder-propeller hydrodynamics, prime mover models, squat in shallow water, and many more.

Book Synopsis Managing Maritime Safety by : Helle A. Oltedal
Download or read book Managing Maritime Safety written by Helle A. Oltedal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shipping is a pillar of global trade, with 90 per cent of the world’s trade in goods and raw materials carried by ship. Despite the economic benefits this delivers, maritime operations can be dangerous, and when accidents occur the consequences are serious. Consequential outcomes from hazards at sea include serious injury, death, loss of cargo and destruction of the marine environment. Managing Maritime Safety will give you a thorough understanding of contemporary maritime safety and its management. It provides varying viewpoints on traditional safety topics in conjunction with critical discussions of the international safety management code and its application. The book also offers new perspectives on maritime safety such as ship and equipment design for safety and the relevance of safety management systems, in particular the application of the International Safety Management code to remote controlled or autonomous ships. The authors all work in the maritime industry, as practitioners, in education, research, government and classification. The combination of wide-ranging and extensive experience provides an unprecedented span of views with a strong connection to the real issues in the maritime domain. This book sets out to provide much needed consolidated knowledge for university level students on maritime safety management, incorporating theoretical, historical, research, operational and design perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book is a result of the Dalhousie-led research project Safe Navigation and Environment Protection, supported by a grant from the Ocean Frontier Institute’s the Canada First Research Excellent Fund (CFREF). The book focuses on Arctic shipping and investigates how ocean change and anthropogenic impacts affect our understanding of risk, policy, management and regulation for safe navigation, environment protection, conflict management between ocean uses, and protection of Indigenous peoples’ interests. A rapidly changing Arctic as a result of climate change and ice loss is rendering the North more accessible, providing new opportunities while producing impacts on the Arctic. The book explores ideas for enhanced governance of Arctic shipping through risk-based planning, marine spatial planning and scaling up shipping standards for safety, environment protection and public health.

Book Synopsis A Method for Developing Mariner Assessments by :
Download or read book A Method for Developing Mariner Assessments written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a systematic method for developing reliable and valid performance-based assessments (PBA) of mariner proficiencies. The method is compliant with: the requirements of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Seafarers' Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Code (STCW Code), as amended in 1995; with all relevant U.S. Coast Guard Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circulars (NVIC); with Instructional Systems Development (ISD); and with the best practices of the maritime industry. The method guides the developer through five steps: (1) specify assessment objectives, (2) determine assessment methods, (3) specify assessment conditions, (4) develop proficiency criteria, and (5) prepare the assessment materials. The report provides materials for a developer's workshop, a stand-alone assessment development manual, and four sample assessments that have been developed by project participants. Guiding materials for the actual conduct of such assessments are provided in a separate report (R & DC-204).
