Book Synopsis Work, Women and the Labour Market by : Jackie West
Download or read book Work, Women and the Labour Market written by Jackie West and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, Work, Women and the Labour Market presents through original articles a coherent overall picture of women’s employment in contemporary British capitalism. For the first time it brings together concrete studies which show graphically how women’s unequal position at work is shaped by the capital-labour relation and by women’s place as housewives and mothers. The book illuminates the differences and similarities in women’s and men’s experience in the labour market and as members of the working class. It is about how and why women come to be in jobs typically regarded as semi or unskilled, about the causes of low pay, and about women workers’ consciousness as workers and as women. It looks at the role of trade unions in relation to women and to sexual divisions, and at how class and gender relations are woven together in the production process. The nine closely researched contributions examine the development of women’s and men’s work in clothing and other manufacturing industries, clerical work in local government, microelectronics in the office, the position of Asian and West Indian women in the labour market, women’s role in the family and part-time work, and women’s involvement and influence in trade unions.
Book Synopsis Same or Different by : Kay M. Fraser
Download or read book Same or Different written by Kay M. Fraser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume responds to the 1968 sewing worker strikes at the Ford Motor Company, asking how the worker demands made by women are to be heard and understood in workplace negotiations. At the time of original writing in the late 1990s, there remained many women workers whose needs and concerns remained hidden behind a workplace agenda dominated by male interests. Kay M. Fraser utilises some of the insights offered by post-structuralist feminist theorists to interrogate the competing debates about women workers as they were discursively constructed by the organisations, institutions and individuals interested and involved in the employment of women during the 1960s. Fraser further explores notions of sameness and difference, how these were used to formulate a view of women workers and highlights the need for women to be seen, particularly by those involved in the workplace negotiations of the future, as both the same as and different from men workers.
Book Synopsis The Making of Women Trade Unionists by : Gill Kirton
Download or read book The Making of Women Trade Unionists written by Gill Kirton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In what will be essential reading for all industrial relations scholars, Gill Kirton considers the social construction of women's trade union participation in the context of male dominated trade unions. Exploring the making and progress of women's trade union careers, this book locates the issues within the context of their experiences of three interlocking social institutions - the union, work and family. The book examines how and why women embark on trade union careers, the social processes which shape women's gender and union identities and the combined influences of union/work/family contexts on the trajectory of women's union careers. Additionally, the book offers a historical overview of the development of women's trade union education and separate organizing, with original analysis and historical data.
