Book Synopsis The State and Higher Education by : Dr Brian Salter
Download or read book The State and Higher Education written by Dr Brian Salter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about higher education but very little about the organisations of the state which increasingly determine its destiny. Employing the theory of educational change developed in the authors' previous work, this book analyses the contribution each part of the state structure has made to the present condition of higher education. Beginning with the political parties and parliamentary committees, it shows how there has been a steady decline in support for the traditional values of autonomous university education and a growing belief in the accountability of higher education to the needs of the economy. It then proceeds to show how this ideological change was fostered by the DES and used to justify the development of bureaucratic mechanisms of management and control.
Book Synopsis Farm Incomes, Wealth and Agricultural Policy by : Berkeley Hill
Download or read book Farm Incomes, Wealth and Agricultural Policy written by Berkeley Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: The central aim of the Common Agricultural Policy is to support the incomes of farmers, yet reliable information on the overall incomes of farmers and their households is scarce. In general, farmers in the EU are not a low-income or poor sector of society and much of the present CAP income support goes to those that are relatively well-off. This book, the 3rd edition to address these issues, has been updated and expanded to include: updated coverage of statistics and references; the major changes in methodology of income measurement flowing from the 1995 revision of the European System of Accounts; a critical examination of wealth and balance sheets for the agricultural industry as currently calculated; incorporation of material from Japan and countries in Central and Eastern Europe that are candidates for EU membership.
Book Synopsis The Official History of Privatisation, Vol. II by : David Parker
Download or read book The Official History of Privatisation, Vol. II written by David Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume II of Professor Parker's authoritative Official History of Privatisation, covering the period from the re-election of Margaret Thatcher in 1987 to the election of Tony Blair in 1997. Volume II considers in detail several of the major privatisations, including those of airports, steel, water, electricity, coal and the railways, as well as a number of smaller ones. Each privatisation involved major challenges in terms of industrial restructuring, organising successful sales and, in a number of cases, establishing effective regulatory regimes. The policy evolved and new methods of selling and regulating were put in place that enabled further disposals to occur. Monolithic nationalised industries with their emphasis on the benefits of economies of scale, vertical integration and rationalisation, were replaced by industrial structures rooted in the importance of commercial management, risk taking and competition. In government departments and parts of the National Health Service, direct employees were replaced by private contractors, and private investment became a characteristic of public infrastructure in the form of PFI/PPP schemes. This study draws heavily on the official records of the British government, to which the author was given full access and on interviews with the leading figures involved in each of the privatisations, including ex-ministers, civil servants, business and City figures, as well as academics that have studied the subject. This book will of great interest to students of privatisation, British political history and of business and economics in general.
Download or read book Tanker Wars written by Martin S. Navias and published by I.B. Tauris. This book was released on 1996-12-31 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Iran-Iraq war, hundreds of merchant vessels were attacked, more than 400 seamen killed and millions of dollars' worth of damages were suffered by owners, charterers and insurers. In the most sustained assault on merchant shipping since the Second World War, the control of shipping routes, destruction of enemy and enemy-allied ships, and the protection of oil exports, were key objectives. These campaigns touched the economic and security interests of the Gulf states by threatening their exports and highlighting their political and military vulnerability. The ripples of the tanker wars extended well beyond the region with attacks on vessels with foreign flags which invoked international concern and drew in foreign naval forces.

Book Synopsis The New Politics of the NHS by : Rudolf Klein
Download or read book The New Politics of the NHS written by Rudolf Klein and published by Radcliffe Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Politics of the NHS has become established over a quarter century and five editions as the key overview of the NHS and its processes and paths of influence. This latest edition remains a clear, easy-to-read guide to often complex debates. It encompasses both the background of the evolution of the NHS since its foundation, and a completely up-to-date picture of its present and future in a more pluralistic - and possibly more financially austere - era in which deference to medical expertise is eroding and information on health and care is far more widely available. Assuming no prior knowledge of NHS politics and systems, The New Politics of the NHS focuses on management, structure, centralisation, funding, economic performance, challenges, current party political debates, interest groups and rationing, and also on the NHS's institutional and cultural continuity as a tax-funded service providing comprehensive, universal healthcare free at the point of delivery. It is a vital update for all healthcare professionals, NHS managers, policy makers and shapers, and those in special interest groups including patient advocacy organisations. From reviews of previous editions: ' A valuable insight into the discussions and decisions that determine such an important aspect of our daily life.' CANCER CARE NEWS

Book Synopsis The Communication of Politics by : Ralph M. Negrine
Download or read book The Communication of Politics written by Ralph M. Negrine and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1996-09-24 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should those exercising power be made more accountable, and what roles should the mass media play in that process? Can the public monitor the exercise of power without the existence of a strong and inquisitive media? The Communication of Politics examines these and other questions vital to the debate on the media's role in the democratic process. Ralph Negrine explores the complexity of the links between the media, the institutional political world and the public through case studies drawn from contemporary British politics and other political systems including the United States. He examines some of the often overlooked problems faced by the media in its efforts to create an informed citizenry'. Questioning the practices that filter information and confronting the idea that information itself is unproblematic, Negrine shows why the essential task of uncovering truths remains elusive.
Book Synopsis Privatisation in Developing Countries by : V. V. Ramanadham
Download or read book Privatisation in Developing Countries written by V. V. Ramanadham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely felt that the public sector in many developing countries is too large, and that privatisation would benefit both the users of individual services and the economy in general. However, enthusiasm for private enterprise solutions is not always matched by the requisite financial and economic technology. The sort of schemes appropriate for a country like China, with its highly planned public sector economy, and Jordan, with its dominant private sector, are unlikely to be the same. Privatisation without reference to these differences will be an economic, administrative and organisational chaos rather than a panacea. Originally published in 1989, this book starts with an analysis on the concept, rationale and fundamental issues of privatisation, with reference to both developed and developing countries. There follows a critical scrutiny of the privatisation programmes of countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, written by contributors actively concerned with public enterprise and privatisation at the time. It examines the role of international aid agencies, including the World Bank, in promoting the schemes and it details the positive impact of them as well as their pitfalls. These country accounts are complemented by a concluding chapter giving an overview of the substantial issues raised.
