Book Synopsis Thermal Ice Drilling Technology by : Pavel G. Talalay
Download or read book Thermal Ice Drilling Technology written by Pavel G. Talalay and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a review of thermal ice drilling technologies, including the design, parameters, and performance of various tools and drills for making holes in ice sheets, ice caps, mountain glaciers, ice shelves, and sea ice. In recent years, interest in thermal drilling technology has increased as a result of subglacial lake explorations and extraterrestrial investigations. The book focuses on the latest ice drilling technologies, but also discusses the historical development of ice drilling tools and devices over the last 100 years to offer valuable insights into what is possible and what not to do in the future. Featuring numerous figures and pictures, many of them published for the first time, it is intended for specialists working in ice-core sciences, polar oceanography, drilling engineers and glaciologists, and is also a useful reference for researchers and graduate students working in engineering and cold-regions technology.

Book Synopsis Maritime Claims in the Arctic by : Erik Franckx
Download or read book Maritime Claims in the Arctic written by Erik Franckx and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the fundamental changes which occurred in the political structure of Europe, and improved East--West relations in general, the Arctic has increasingly become the focal point of international attention during the last few years. Scientific research and environmental protection are areas which have already witnessed some form of international cooperation in the area. With this particular evolution in mind, a new look at the legal regime of navigation in the Arctic seems to be justified. While several other countries border on the Arctic, Canada and Russia have the most extensive shorelines and have shown keen interest in ensuring that their proper share of this area is not encroached by other countries. This book is thus generally restricted to an examination of the maritime boundaries that these states are claiming, and the extent to which other states have recognized them. It also explores the need for greater international cooperation in this area, not only between the two main contenders but also with other countries that have shown a special interest in Arctic navigation and in the exploitation of resources of this area.

Book Synopsis Geodynamic Evolution of East Antarctica by : M. Satish-Kumar
Download or read book Geodynamic Evolution of East Antarctica written by M. Satish-Kumar and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2008 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geological correlations of East Antarctica with adjoining continents have been puzzling geologists ever since the concept of a Gondwana supercontinent surfaced. Despite the paucity of outcrops because of ice cover, difficulty of access and extreme weather, the past 50 years of Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions (JARE) has successfully revealed vital elements of the geology of East Antarctica. This volume presents reviews and new research from localities across East Antarctica, especially from Dronning Maud Land to Enderby Land, where the geological record preserves a history that spans the Archaean and Proterozoic. The reviews include extensive bibliographies of results obtained by geologists who participated in the JARE. Comprehensive geological, petrological and geochemical studies, form a platform for future research on the formation and dispersion of Rodinia in the Mesoproterozoic and subsequent assembly of Gondwana in the Neoproterozoic to Early Palaeozoic.
