Book excerpt: Democracy came to South Africa in April 1994, when the African National Congress won a landslide victory in the first free national election in the country’s history. That definitive and peaceful transition from apartheid is often cited as a model for others to follow. The new order has since survived several transitions of ANC leadership, and it averted a potentially destabilizing constitutional crisis in 2008. Yet enormous challenges remain. Poverty and inequality are among the highest in the world. Staggering unemployment has fueled xenophobia, resulting in deadly aggression directed at refugees and migrant workers from Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Violent crime rates, particularly murder and rape, remain grotesquely high. The HIV/AIDS pandemic was shockingly mishandled at the highest levels of government, and infection rates continue to be overwhelming. Despite the country’s uplifting success of hosting Africa’s first World Cup in 2010, inefficiency and corruption remain rife, infrastructure and basic services are often semifunctional, and political opposition and a free media are under pressure. In this volume, major scholars chronicle South Africa’s achievements and challenges since the transition. The contributions, all previously unpublished, represent the state of the art in the study of South African politics, economics, law, and social policy.

Book excerpt: 'When I joined the struggle as a 13-year-old boy in Soweto, I would never have imagined that one day I would blow the whistle on a special kind of corruption that was destroying the party and the values I had been fighting for all my life.' In 2010, government spokesperson Themba Maseko was called to the Gupta family's Saxonwold compound and asked by Ajay Gupta to divert the government's entire advertising budget to the family's media company. When Maseko refused to do so, he was removed from his position and forced to leave the public service. The life of this once-proud civil servant would never be the same again. Maseko, whose activism was forged in the Soweto uprising of 1976, is a product of the struggle, and has always been unfailingly loyal to the principles of the ANC. In 2016, when the party called on members with evidence of wrongdoing by the Guptas to step forward, Maseko was the only one to do so. For this courageous act of whistleblowing, he was ostracised, slandered and even threatened. As a former senior state official, Maseko also offers a rare insider's view of the presidencies of Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma and of the inner workings of government. Compelling and revelatory, For My Country shows what it takes to stand up for one's principles and defy the most powerful man in the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa’s Suspended Revolution tells the story of South Africa’s democratic transition and the prospects for the country to develop a truly inclusive political system. Beginning with an account of the transition in the leadership of the African National Congress from Thabo Mbeki to Jacob Zuma, the book then broadens its lens to examine the relationship of South Africa’s political elite to its citizens. It also examines the evolution of economic and social policies through the democratic transition, as well as the development of a postapartheid business community and a foreign policy designed to re-engage South Africa with the world community. Written by one of South Africa’s leading scholars and political commentators, the book combines historical and contemporary analysis with strategies for an alternative political agenda. Adam Habib connects the lessons of the South African experience with theories of democratic transition, social change, and conflict resolution. Political leaders, scholars, students, and activists will all find material here to deepen their understanding of the challenges and opportunities of contemporary South Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Manifesto for Social Change is the third of a three-volume series that started seven years ago investigating the causes of our country’s – and the continent’s – development obstacles. Architects of Poverty (2009) set out to explain what role African elites played in creating and promoting their fellow Africans’ misery. Advocates for Change (2011) showed that there were short-term to medium-term solutions to many of Africa’s and South Africa’s problems, if only the powers that be would take note. And now, more than 22 years after the advent of democracy in South Africa, we have A Manifesto for Social Change, the conclusion in the trilogy.

"Drawing on a wide range of interviews with participants in the Rorke's Drift project, not only from South Africa, but also from Sweden, the Netherlands, Britain and the USA, this book sets out to write the story of the beginnings of the Centre in the 1960s, the founding and development of the Fine Art School in 1968, and the contribution of teachers and students until its closure in 1982." --book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In March 2015, I was tasked by Pravin Gordhan, the minister responsible for local government, to root out corruption in the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in the Eastern Cape. Over the following eighteen months, I led the investigations and orchestrated the crackdown as the "hatchet man" for the metro's new Mayor, Danny Jordaan. This is my account of kickbacks, rigged contracts and a political party at war with itself.' How to Steal a City is the gripping insider account of this intervention, which lays bare how Nelson Mandela Bay metro was bled dry by criminal syndicates, and how factional politics within the ruling party abetted that corruption. As a former senior state official and local government 'fixer', Crispian Olver was no stranger to dodgy politicians and broken organisations. Yet what he found in Nelson Mandela Bay went far beyond rigged contracts, blatant conflicts of interest and garden-variety kickbacks. The city's administration had evolved into a sophisticated web of front companies, criminal syndicates and compromised local politicians and officials. The metro was effectively controlled by a criminal network closely allied to a dominant local ANC faction. What Olver found was complete state capture – a microcosm of what has taken place in national government. Olver and his team initiated a clean-up of the administration, clearing out corrupt officials and rebuilding public trust. Then came the ANC's doomed campaign for the August 2016 local government elections. Having lost its way in factional battles and corruption, the divided party went down to a humiliating defeat in its traditional heartland. Olver paid a high price for his work in Nelson Mandela Bay. Intense political pressure and even threats to his personal safety took a toll on his mental and physical health. When his political support was withdrawn, he had to flee the city as the forces stacked against him took their revenge. This is his story.

Book excerpt: After centuries of white domination and decades of increasingly savage repression, freedom came to South Africa far later than elsewhere in the continent- and yet was marked by a commitment to non-racialism. Nelson Mandela's cabinet and government were made up of women and men of all races and many spoke of the birth of a new "Rainbow Nation." How did this come about? How did an African nationalist liberation movement resisting apartheid- a universally denounced violent expression of white supremacy- open its doors to other races, and whites in particular? And what did non-racialism mean? This is the real 'miracle' of South Africa: that at the height of white supremacy and repression, black and white democrats- in their different organisations, coming from vastly different backgrounds and traditions- agreed on one thing: that the future for South Africa would be non-racial. This book is a path-breaking study of the emergence of non-racialism in South Africa. It tells some of the stories and hidden histories that help explain South Africa's past. It focuses on a talented, brave, but tiny minority of whites, liberals, radicals, communists, Trotskyists, humanists, Christians, and idealists who rejected the growing racism of post-war South Africa and worked to breach the dividing line between black and white. From the Torch Commando that could mobilize tens of thousands of whites at the beginning of the 1950s to the Liberal Party and Congress of Democrats that could only boast a few hundred members by the end of the decade, white activists fought to maintain the vision of racial equality in an increasingly divided society. Their African nationalist allies fought a harder battle within the ANC and other organizations in order to keep alive the notion that black and white could struggle together and live peacefully. Together, black and white activists developed a theory of struggle and ways of mobilizing that maintained the ideal of a non-racial South Africa. The democratic state ushered in after 1994 can be traced back directly to the work that activists undertook in the 1950s and after.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic work, Munitions of the mind traces how propaganda has formed part of the fabric of conflict since the dawn of warfare, and how in its broadest definition it has also been part of a process of persuasion at the heart of human communication. Stone monuments, coins, broadsheets, paintings and pamphlets, posters, radio, film, television, computers and satellite communications - throughout history, propaganda has had access to ever more complex and versatile media. This third edition has been revised and expanded to include a new preface, new chapters on the 1991 Gulf War, information age conflict in the post-Cold War era, and the world after the terrorist attacks of September 11. It also offers a new epilogue and a comprehensive bibliographical essay. The extraordinary range of this book, as well as the original and cohesive analysis it offers, make it an ideal text for all international courses covering media and communications studies, cultural history, military history and politics. It will also prove fascinating and accessible to the general reader.
