Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an explanation of the nature of the Indian university system, including its specificities and its peculiarities as well as exploring how they developed. It offers a historical and institutional perspective by singling out the forces that have shaped the present Indian higher education system. Bridging the pre-independence and the post-independence eras, the book illustrates the continuities as well as the differences between the two epochs. It makes a compelling case for the idea that history matters, and an understanding of India’s history is crucial to understanding the present day Indian university scene. Using multiple paradigmatic case studies, based on the University of Calcutta, the Indian Institute of Science, and the Indian Statistical Institute, the book highlights the dominant ideologies and interests that have shaped the university system since its inception in 1857. It will be of great importance to students and scholars of history and education, particularly those with an interest in the history of India and its education system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role western-education and social standing played in the development of Indian nationalism in the early twentieth century. It highlights the influences that education abroad had on a significant proportion of the Indian population. A large number of Indian students - including key figures such as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Jawaharlal Nehru - took up prominent positions in government service, industry or political movements after having spent their student years in Britain before the Second World War. Having reaped the benefits of the British educational system, they spearheaded movements in India that sought to gain independence from British rule. The author analyses the long-term impact of this short-term migration on Britain, South Asia and Empire and deals with issues of migrant identities and the ways in which travel shaped ideas about the 'Self' and 'Home'. Through this study of the England-Returned, attention is drawn to contemporary concerns about the politicisation of foreign students and the antecedents of the growing South Asian student population in the USA and Europe today, as well as of Britain's growing South Asian diaspora.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlights the state of affairs in nine districts of the erstwhile Central Provinces and Berar, alongwith the interpretation of unknown facts, enlarging it from objective empiricism to historicism on the basis of sociological and historical perspectives. Salient Features (i) It identifies the changeability of the educational pattern from indigenous nature to modern perspectives at all levels. (ii) It highlights the emergence of leadership, new values, nationalism and freedom struggle and also shows how education works as condition, instrument and as an effect of social change in the region. (iii) It explains the extent of adoption and non-adoption of educational facilities at all levels in the context of socio-cultural conditions. (iv) It reveals how English models were initiated too slavishly, students were being crammed with undigested knowledge and teachers obsessed with results. (v) It highlights the Hitavada’s relentless crusade for a separate university, forecast of Jabalpur and Amravati Universities and demand for more autonomy in the province. (vi) It shows how the period of four decades in question transformed a society. (vii) It refers over-all educational backwardness of females, low-castes and aboriginal tribes with a growing assertion of claims to social and political recognition. (viii) It reveals how minorities’ interest in education became manifest through conferences and C.P. Legislative Council. (ix) It highlights positional and structural changes occurred due to education. In short, this book shows how poor ‘peripheral’ society of Vidarbha could make headway on the guidelines of ‘core’ societies and achieve the objective of ‘sustainable development’ through educational expansion.
