Book excerpt: There is growing evidence at the global level of the role that fisheries and social protection policies can jointly play in combating poverty and hunger, whilst simultaneously promoting sustainable natural resources management. The Coherence between social protection and fisheries policies Diagnostic Tool provides practical instruments for assessing the coherence between fisheries policies and social protection at country level. It helps to identify and map the scope and nature of links between fisheries policies and social protection interventions within selected countries, including supportive and constraining factors; and understand people’s experiences and perceptions of these links and how the links (or lack thereof) affect their livelihoods. The Diagnostic Tool provides the basis for identifying options for strengthening coherence, including the methodology and interview guides to be applied to country-specific contexts.

Book Synopsis Guidelines for micro-finance and credit services in support of small-scale fisheries in Asia by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Guidelines for micro-finance and credit services in support of small-scale fisheries in Asia written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Guidelines for increasing access of small-scale fisheries to credit and microfinance services in Asia have been developed to support the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The purpose of these guidelines is fourfold, i.e. to: • Increase awareness about the financial service needs of small-scale fishers (SSF) for more sustainable and inclusive access to finance; • Guide policy and decision makers in the Asia-Pacific region and elsewhere, to help introduce and incentivize financial services to small-scale fishers, with the ultimate objective to encourage investment in the industry and by doing so influence and strengthen sustainability, ecological and economic viability of these fisheries; • Build capacity among financial service providers, fisherfolk organizations, NGOs, and concerned government agencies, to design and implement financial service products and programmes that suit the needs of small-scale fishing communities and enhance social protection; and • Promote financial services that incentivize and reward a responsible and sustainable conduct of fishing, fish processing and marketing operations. The document commences by laying out the background and context, purpose and target audience of these Guidelines. It describes why microfinance and credit are important for small scale fisheries and why many small-scale fishers are not currently financed, which includes a discussion of risks. The Guidelines suggest entry and leverage points for actors interested in supporting the access of financial services for SSFs and compares agriculture (smallholders) and SSF business characteristics. The Guidelines identify a range of actors involved in finance of SSF, which include supply side, demand side, multifunction and enabling environment actors. It elaborates on the likely roles and activities of each category of actor, as well as their incentives and constraints in the provision or receipt of finance. The Guidelines describe some key good practices in the provision of microfinance and credit to SSFs and delves into some detail on the market, main activities and possible products, the role of product design, policies and procedures, marketing and promotion, risk assessment and credit analysis, delivery channels, loan monitoring and repayment elements and the need for product pricing to contribute to institutional sustainability. Finally, the Guidelines provide advice to second tier investors, including guidance on the use of smart subsidies, and when concessionary loan funds may be preferable to loan guarantees.

Book excerpt: These Guidelines for increasing access of small-scale fisheries to insurance services in Asia have been developed to support the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). The purpose of these Guidelines is fourfold, i.e. • to increase awareness about the needs of small-scale fishers for better risk management, disaster preparedness and insurance services; • to guide policy and decision makers to help introduce insurance services to small-scale fishers, with the ultimate objective to strengthen the sustainability and ecological and economic viability of these fisheries; • to build capacity among insurance providers, fisherfolk organizations, NGOs, and concerned government agencies, to design and implement insurance programmes that suit the needs of small-scale fishing communities and enhance social protection; • to promote insurance services that incentivize and reward a responsible and sustainable conduct of fishing operations and a better preparedness for natural disasters including climate change related challenges. These Guidelines commence by elaborating on the context and framework, in which insurance programmes for small-scale fisheries should be conceived. It is explained why most small-scale fishers are presently not insured. Major risks and consequences faced by fishers are identified. Risks include capsizing, grounding, collision and sinking of vessels; fire on board of vessels or in port; injury or death of crew as a result of above, human errors during navigation or fishing operations; oil spills or other pollution caused by fishing vessels; theft and vandalism, when moored in port; piracy

This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2018 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture emphasizes the sector’s role in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, and measurement of progress towards these goals. It notes the particular contributions of inland and small-scale fisheries, and highlights the importance of rights-based governance for equitable and inclusive development. As in past editions, the publication begins with a global analysis of trends in fisheries and aquaculture production, stocks, processing and use, trade and consumption, based on the latest official statistics, along with a review of the status of the world’s fishing fleets and human engagement and governance in the sector. Topics explored in Parts 2 to 4 include aquatic biodiversity; the ecosystem approach to fisheries and to aquaculture; climate change impacts and responses; the sector’s contribution to food security and human nutrition; and issues related to international trade, consumer protection and sustainable value chains. Global developments in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, selected ocean pollution concerns and FAO’s efforts to improve capture fishery data are also discussed. The issue concludes with the outlook for the sector, including projections to 2030. As always, The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to- date information to a wide audience, including policy-makers, managers, scientists, stakeholders and indeed all those interested in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Book Synopsis Report of the Global Workshop between regional fishery bodies and basin management organizations for scaling up cooperation towards sustainable inland fisheries in the context of food security and nutrition, Entebbe, Uganda, 6–8 December 2023 by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Report of the Global Workshop between regional fishery bodies and basin management organizations for scaling up cooperation towards sustainable inland fisheries in the context of food security and nutrition, Entebbe, Uganda, 6–8 December 2023 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-05-27 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small-scale fisheries in inland waters are particularly important for supporting local communities, providing livelihoods, and ensuring food security, especially in rural areas along or around existing water basins. [Author] However, these food systems are vulnerable to stressors such as pollution, habitat loss and degradation, draining wetlands, river fragmentation and poor land management. [Author] Indeed, there is potential to increase synergies between these different sectors using “integrated water resources management” (IWRM). [Author] There are currently no global or regional frameworks between regional fishery bodies (RFBs) and basin management organizations (BMOs) in place to exploit synergies between inland fisheries and other water use sectors. [Author] Consequently, the overall objective of the first global workshop between RFBs and BMOs, held in Entebbe, Uganda from 6 to 8 December 2023 was to promote, discuss and establish an effective cooperation framework between BMOs and RFBs and to develop concerted approaches to integrate inland fisheries management into basin management, in the context of climate change, water scarcity, food security and ecosystem health. [Author] The workshop report will share the outcomes from this workshop which resulted in a consensus on the importance of employing multidisciplinary approaches, recognizing their value and the imperative need for such strategies. Download or read book Scoping Study on Decent Work and Employment in Fisheries and Aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2017 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fisheries and aquaculture are a significant source of livelihoods and contribute to the food security of hundreds of millions of people. Notwithstanding, small-scale fishers, fish famers, boat crew members, fish-processors, fish traders and fish processing workers often face serious labour related challenges which limit the poverty reduction potential of the sector. Low earnings and labour productivity in rural areas, ineffective labour regulation, low level of workers' organization with reported cases of child labour and severe cases of human rights abuses are common challenges in the sector. These challenges are often exacerbated by the informal nature of the sector (especially in small scale fishing) and by prevailing seasonality, remoteness of operations and hazardous nature of work. Based on available literature, the study explores wide-ranging decent work concerns in the fisheries and aquaculture sector with the objective to inform and guide FAO programming and collaboration with governments, civil society organizations, the private sector and other United Nations organizations in promoting decent working and living conditions along the whole seafood value chain."--Page 4 of cover.
