Book excerpt: The 2019 edition of the World Investment Report focuses on special economic zones (SEZs) which are widely used across most developing and many developed economies. Although the performance of many zones remains below expectations, the rate of establishment of new zones is accelerating as governments increasingly compete for internationally mobile industrial activity. Policymakers face not only the traditional challenges to making SEZs succeed, including the need for strategic focus, sound governance models, and effective investment promotion tools, but also new challenges brought about by the sustainable development imperative, the new industrial revolution, and changing patterns of international production. The Report explores the place of SEZs in today’s global investment landscape and provides guidance for policymakers on how to make SEZs work for sustainable development. It presents international investment trends and prospects at global, regional and national levels, as well as the evolution of international production and global value chains. It analyses the latest developments in new policy measures for investment promotion, facilitation and regulation around the world, as well as updates on investment treaties, their reform and investment dispute settlement cases.

Book excerpt: The present edition of the Report provides unique data on the adoption of ICT by enterprises in developing countries. It also explores ICT policy options in a developing-country context and proposes a framework for national ICT policy reviews and for the design and assessment of pro-poor e-strategies. The Report’s analysis of trends in core ICT indicators such as the use of Internet and mobile phone, as well as the role of broadband in promoting the information economy, concludes that the diffusion of ICT in developing countries still needs government intervention in areas where private providers might be discouraged to go because of costs associated to geographic hurdles or the absence of a critical mass of customers.

Book excerpt: Achieving our Common Humanity: Celebrating Global Cooperation through the United Nations portrays landmark accomplishments of the United Nations in supporting peace and security, promoting and protecting human rights, fostering economic and social development, and shaping international law. Amply illustrated with photographs, charts, maps and infographics, and featuring a wealth of information on how the United Nations serves the peoples of the world, this book depicts a wide range of challenges that the Organization has met and successful initiatives that it has conceived and spearheaded as a matter of common purpose among nations in favour of collective human progress. Its rich tapestry of stories explores the diverse ways in which the United Nations fights poverty, combats climate change and protects the environment, undertakes to transform conflicts into peace, helps refugees thrive, supports sharing the benefits of technology, works to stop the spread of infectious diseases and reduce the risk of disasters, and helps render justice for all and ensure the rights of women and children. While recounting decisive innovations at the level of global policy and international agreement, Achieving our Common Humanity also provides a view of how such changes have significantly improved the lives of affected individuals around the world. These remarkable stories show how the United Nations, with its ambitious and evolving vision for the shared prosperity of people and planet, is helping create a better world for everyone.

Book excerpt: This report assesses trends and prospects for the global economy and the international trading system, with a particular focus on the issues of capital formation, structural change and international competitiveness. It considers current difficulties dating back to the financial excesses and global economic imbalances of the 1990s, and examines the need for new thinking on development strategies. A range of issues are discussed including continuing weaknesses in developed economies, disparities in growth performance in developing and transition economies, policies required to promote global recovery, capital flows to developing countries, trade flows and balances. It examines policy reforms and economic performance in Latin America, where market-led trade reforms have gone furthest but where initial signs of success have not endured.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the policy issues that e-commerce raises for the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and developing countries. Electronic commerce offers unprecedented opportunities to both developed and developing countries. In the short term, due to lack of infrastructure in the developing countries, the gains are likely to be concentrated in the developed countries. In the long term, the developing countries have more to benefit and they can gain by skipping some of the stages in development of information technology through which developed countries have had to pass. The author has three policy proposals for developing countries. First, that it would be most appropriate to classify e-commerce as trade with services with GATS discipline applied to it. Classifying e-commerce as goods trade with a permanent zero custom duty pact would liberalise all e-commerce by default, undermining the bargaining power of developing countries. Secondly Internet transactions would be best classified as cross-border trade rather than consumption abroad. The last proposal is that developing countries with the capacity to export skilled services through the Internet, should aggressively negotiate market access with developed countries in the future WTO negotiations aiming to seek liberalisation in the sectors in which they have comparative advantage and recognition of their education, qualifications and skills etc.
