Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Ivory Coast was touted as an African miracle, a poster child for modernization and the ways that Western aid and multinational corporations would develop the continent. At the same time, Marxist scholars—most notably Samir Amin—described the capitalist activity in Ivory Coast as empty, unsustainable, and incapable of bringing real change to the lives of ordinary people. To some extent, Amin’s criticisms were validated when, in the 1980s, the Ivorian economy collapsed. In African Miracle, African Mirage, Abou B. Bamba incorporates economics, political science, and history to craft a bold, transnational study of the development practices and intersecting colonial cultures that continue to shape Ivory Coast today. He considers French, American, and Ivorian development discourses in examining the roles of hydroelectric projects and the sugar, coffee, and cocoa industries in the country’s boom and bust. In so doing, he brings the agency of Ivorians themselves to the fore in a way not often seen in histories of development. Ultimately, he concludes that the “maldevelopment” evident by the mid-1970s had less to do with the Ivory Coast’s “insufficiently modern” citizens than with the conflicting missions of French and American interests within the context of an ever-globalizing world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa's Thirty Years' War began in the early 1960s, when a civil war in Chad pitted the Muslim north and center against the political domination of African Christian politicians from southern Chad. During their insurgency, the Muslim revolutionaries found a safe haven in the Sudan, whose governments provided support hoping to overthrow the Tombalbaye government in Chad. Libya entered the fray in 1969 when Qadaffi claimed the Aozou strip of northern Chad that was reputably rich in uranium deposits.Throughout the 1970s and the 1980s the conflict among Chad, Libya, and the Sudan engaged the interests of France, the U.S., the Organization of African Unity, and the United Nations. It drained the resources of these African states and deflated their diminutive treasuries. Their efforts to project political and military power beyond existing boundaries created political confusion, fostered tribal warfare, and exacerbated mistrust on their volatile frontiers. In Africa's Thirty Years' War: Chad, Libya, and the Sudan , 1963–1993, Burr and Collins document this tragedy and analyze its numerous causes. They argue that Chad has been a pawn in regional and international politics. Drawing on a vast array of sources, from mainstream media to radio transcripts to obscure newspapers and fly sheets, the authors provide a vivid portrait of a modern tragedy unknown to most readers.

Book excerpt: In Darfur: The Long Road to Disaster, Burr and Collins have updated their original 1999 volume with additional chapters. The new title is not a publisher's gimmick: this is indeed the prehistory of Darfur's tragedy, and it is essential, if difficult, reading for any serious student of the crisis... Not only does it provide an account of a history indispensable for understanding Darfur, but it is a salutary reminder of how intractable conflicts in the Chad basin can be. --African Studies Review Millard Burr and Robert Collins' book documents the twists and turns in this long-running saga.... This edition brings the story almost up to date. - Times Higher Education Supplement A lively and informative study... The authors consider ethnic, religious, cultural, technological, geographic, and meteorological variables and present brief enlightening political portraits of the stories' protagonists. - Foreign Affairs Review a timely, useful contribution... well documented and lucidly written. - International Journal of Middle East Studie
