Book Synopsis The Making of the Black Working Class in Britain by : Ron Ramdin
Download or read book The Making of the Black Working Class in Britain written by Ron Ramdin and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive historical perspective on the relationship between Black workers and the changing patterns of Britain's labour needs. It places in an historical context the development of a small black presence in sixteenth-century Britain into the disadvantaged black working class of the 1980s. The book deals with the colonial labour institutions (slavery, indentureship and trade unionism) and the ideology underlying them and also considers the previously neglected role of the nineteenth-century Black radicals in British working-class struggles. Finally, the book examines the emergence of a Black radical ideology that has underpinned the twentieth-century struggles against unemployment, racial attacks and workplace grievances, among them employer and trade union racism.
Book Synopsis Trade Unions and the State by : Chris Howell
Download or read book Trade Unions and the State written by Chris Howell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of Britain's powerful labor movement in the last quarter century has been one of the most significant and astonishing stories in recent political history. How were the governments of Margaret Thatcher and her successors able to tame the unions? In analyzing how an entirely new industrial relations system was constructed after 1979, Howell offers a revisionist history of British trade unionism in the twentieth century. Most scholars regard Britain's industrial relations institutions as the product of a largely laissez faire system of labor relations, punctuated by occasional government interference. Howell, on the other hand, argues that the British state was the prime architect of three distinct systems of industrial relations established in the course of the twentieth century. The book contends that governments used a combination of administrative and judicial action, legislation, and a narrative of crisis to construct new forms of labor relations. Understanding the demise of the unions requires a reinterpretation of how these earlier systems were constructed, and the role of the British government in that process. Meticulously researched, Trade Unions and the State not only sheds new light on one of Thatcher's most significant achievements but also tells us a great deal about the role of the state in industrial relations.
Book Synopsis Policy Learning and British Governance in the 1960s by : Hugh Pemberton
Download or read book Policy Learning and British Governance in the 1960s written by Hugh Pemberton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-07-12 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Britain's economic policy revolution in the 1960s achieve so little? Drawing on the latest political science theories of policy networks and policy learning, Hugh Pemberton outlines a new model of economic policy making and then uses it to interrogate recently-released government documents. In explaining both the radical shift in policy and its failure to achieve its full potential, this book has much to say about the problems of British governance throughout the whole of the postwar period.

Book Synopsis Nostalgia and the post-war Labour Party by : Richard Jobson
Download or read book Nostalgia and the post-war Labour Party written by Richard Jobson and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact that nostalgia has had on the Labour Party’s political development since 1951. It argues that nostalgia has defined Labour’s identity and determined the party’s trajectory. Nostalgia has hindered policy discussion, determined the form and parameters of party modernisation, shaped internal conflict and cohesion and made it difficult for the party to adjust to socioeconomic changes. It has frequently left the party out of touch with the modern world. In this way, this study offers an assessment of Labour’s failures to adapt to the changing nature of post-war Britain and will be of interest to both students and academics and to those with a more general interest in Labour’s history and politics.
Book Synopsis Only in the Common People by : Paul Long
Download or read book Only in the Common People written by Paul Long and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2008-12-18 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “corrupt and moronic though the common people are seemingly becoming ... only in the common people can the true work be rooted, the true tradition rediscovered and re-informed” Charles Parker, BBC Radio Producer 1959. In 1958, in his best-selling book Culture and Society, Raymond Williams identified working-class culture as ‘a key issue in our own time’. Why this happened and how this subject was thought about and acted upon is the focus of this book. Paul Long investigates a variety of projects and practices that were designed to describe, validate, reclaim, rejuvenate or generate ‘authentic’ working-class culture as part of the re-imagining of Britishness in the context of the post-war settlement. Detailed case studies cover the wartime cultural activities of CEMA – the forerunner of the Arts Council - the Folk Revival, the impact of Richard Hoggart’s The Uses of Literacy, broadcasting and the radio work of Charles Parker, Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, the roots of modern arts festivals in Arnold Wesker’s Centre 42 project as well as the impact of progressive education on children’s writing and the politics of the English language. ‘Only in the Common People: The Aesthetics of Class in Post-War Britain’ examines the assumptions, idealism and prejudices behind these projects and the terms of class as ‘the preoccupation of a generation’. This approach offers a historicisation of the broader ideas and debates that informed the development of the New Left and British social history and cultural theory, offering an understanding of the rise of respect for ‘the common man’.
Book Synopsis Peace and Power in Cold War Britain by : Christopher R. Hill
Download or read book Peace and Power in Cold War Britain written by Christopher R. Hill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peace and Power in Cold War Britain explores the ban the bomb and anti-Vietnam War movements from the perspective of media history, focusing in particular on the relationship between radicalism and the rise of television. In doing so, it addresses two questions, both of which seem to recur with each major breakthrough in communications technology: what do advances in communications media mean for democratic participation in politics and how do distinctive types of media condition the very nature of that participation itself? In answering these, the book views the ban the bomb and anti-Vietnam War movements in relation to communication power and media discourse. It highlights how these movements intersected with parts of public life that were being transformed by television themselves, shaping struggles for social change among activists and public intellectuals on the streets, in the Labour Party and in the law courts. The significance of this relationship between media and movements was complex and wide-ranging. Christopher R. Hill demonstrates that it contributed to the enrichment of democracy in Cold War Britain, with radicals serving to innovate and pioneer creative forms of political expression from both in and outside of media organisations. However, the movements increasingly succumbed to news coverage and values that revolved around human interest and violence, feeding into the revolutionary spectacle of 1968 and the turn towards identity politics.
