Download or read book Labour and the Wage written by Zoe Adams and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour and the Wage: A Critical Perspective offers a new perspective on why labour law struggles to respond to problems such as low pay and under-inclusive employment. A Marxian-inspired ontological approach sheds new light on the role of labour law in a capitalist economy and on the limitations and potential of labour law when it comes to bringing about social change. It illustrates this through the lens of the wage. The book develops a legal genealogy that explores the shifting portfolio of concepts through which the wage has been conceptualized in legal discourse as capitalism has developed. This exploration spans from the Norman Conquest to the present day, and covers diverse issues such as the decasualization of the docks, sweated labour, the truck system, tax-credits, tips, and minimum wages. Labour and the Wage provides one of the most in-depth and comprehensive analyses of the wage to date, while, at the same time, shedding new light on the contradictory role, or function, of labour law in the context of capitalism.

Jensen and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1964 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides the opportunity to compare the hiring and employment practices, within the context of local conditions, as they exist in five major ports. It tells how efforts at regulation are influenced by the various institutions and by market constraints and describes the impact of the differences emanating from the industrial relations systems of each of the countries in which the port is located. In all these ports, the basic problem, to a large extent, is still that of casual employment and the author describes the repeated attempts to achieve a solution and analyzes in detail the efforts that failed and those that succeeded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey, first published in 1934, was designed as a contribution to our knowledge of poverty, its incidence and causes. Poverty is a product of many variables, and it needs to be understood as an expression of a complex of economic and other social forces. This study therefore goes beyond the immediate facts, and investigates some of the factors which have influenced the growth of population, the earning strength of families and the economic life of the town and port.
Book Synopsis Class Society at War by : Bernard Waites
Download or read book Class Society at War written by Bernard Waites and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research into the impact of the First World War on European societies has recently begun on a major scale and Dr Waites has been one of the pioneers in this field in Britain. His book considers the War's effects on such major issues as popular images of class, the distribution of income and wealth in society, social relations within the working class, class consciousness and the educational experiences of children from different backgrounds. This study is noteworthy not only for its wide range of hitherto unpublished sources, but also for its attempt to bring social theory to bear upon the study of class relations in England during the first of this century's total wars.
