Formidable mountain barriers and remoteness from Atlantic sea lanes kept the territory outside the orbit of emerging European empires. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, however, Britain, Spain, France, Russsia, and the United States vied for control of this promising new frontier. Three of history's greatest mariners -- Sir Francis Drake, Captain James Cook, and Captain George Vancouver -- spearheaded British expeditions of discovery and trade to the Northwest coast. Despite competition from her European and American rivals, Britains ability to use and control the sea enabled her to establish by the late 1700's a "beachhead of empire" in the area now known as British Columbia.Gough shows how, by outmanoevring her Spanish rivals in a "skilful game of diplomatic chess," Britain concluded the Nootka Agreement. Thus she was able to exploit her trading partnership with the coast Indians and cement a lucrative sea-borne commerce with the Far East. The arrival overland of the Nor'westers and other fur-trading groups further strengthened Britain's financial and political interests in the area -- ending forever the isolation of Northwest America, and 'changing beyond measure the culture of its Indian peoples.' Distant Dominion is the first comprehensive survey to examine Britain's motives for expeditions to this most distant frontier of British maritime development. Book excerpt: During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the Point Reyes Peninsula, forty miles farther north along the San Andreas Fault, shook loose from its temporary moorings to the California coastline and lurched to the northwest by some twenty feet. The powerful quake that terrorized the city also tore through the land and jarred the rural inhabitants of Point Reyes. It was another abrupt step in the peninsula's slow creep from southern to northern California, yielding a piece of land quite divergent from the California mainland to which it is now affixed. Although pressure along the San Andreas Fault continued to build for the remainder of the century, there were no other geologic events of a magnitude that could so drastically alter the land's surface. By contrast, human events since 1906 have significantly altered the peninsula's landscape. In the century following the earthquake, economic, cultural, and political forces gradually reshaped Point Reyes. Possibly the biggest tremor took place in 1962, when Congress created, and President John F. Kennedy signed into law, the Point Reyes National Seashore. At that juncture, the political geography of the land, as a new unit of the National Park Service (NPS), was about to change dramatically. This volume, Managing a Land in Motion: An Administrative History of Point Reyes National Seashore, traces, explains, and analyzes the ideas and events that produced the national seashore and transpired in the forty years that followed.

I photocopied pages out of various other books, but brought this one along intact. It stayed in my tankbag every day, was brought out at every meal, and was pored over in hotel rooms at night. I'm also a writer, and my Adventure Guide to the Alaska Highway became my de facto notebook on the trip--post-it notes of every color peek out from its pages; notes line the margins. There are a finite number of places to stop along the Alaska Highway; most guidebooks will give you pretty much all of them. What makes this one different is its tone. The authors obvious enjoy both the road and writing about it. Personal anecdotes are lightly sprinkled into the text, giving the impression that yes, the authors know what they're talking about. I learned little bits of history about the areas I rode through; not so much that it weighed down the book, but just enough to pique my interest and send me scampering to the library once I got back. Also, the book is laid out very well.
