Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire is pivotal to the functioning of ecosystems in Australia, affecting the distribution and abundance of the continent's unique and highly diverse range of plants and animals. Conservation of this natural biodiversity therefore requires a good understanding of scientific processes involved in the action of fire on the landscape. This book provides an up-to-date synthesis of current knowledge in this area and its application in contemporary land management. Central to the discussion is an exploration of the concept of the fire regime and its interactions with biodiversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human development. Ecological impact assessment (EcIA) is used to predict and evaluate the impacts of development on ecosystems and their components, thereby providing the information needed to ensure that ecological issues are given full and proper consideration in development planning. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) has emerged as a key to sustainable development by integrating social, economic and environmental issues in many countries. EcIA has a major part to play as a component of EIA but also has other potential applications in environmental planning and management. Ecological Impact Assessment provides a comprehensive review of the EcIA process and summarizes the ecological theories and tools that can be used to understand, explain and evaluate the ecological consequences of development proposals. It is intended for the many individuals and companies involved in EIA and EcIA, as well as other areas of environmental management where impacts on ecosystems need to be evaluated. It will benefit planners, regulators, environmental consultants and scientists and will also provide an invaluable sourcebook and guide for the growing number of undergraduate students taking courses in applied ecology, EIA and related topics in environmental science. A practical management guide for the increasing numbers of practitioners of EcIA. A rapidly expanding subject driven by the proliferation of environmental legislation worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring and Monitoring Biological Diversity is the first book to provide comprehensive coverage of standard methods for biodiversity sampling of amphibians, with information on analyzing and using data that will interest biologists in general. In this manual, nearly fifty herpetologists recommend ten standard sampling procedures for measuring and monitoring amphibian and many other populations. The contributors discuss each procedure, along with the circumstances for its appropriate use. In addition, they provide a detailed protocol for each procedure's implementation, a list of necessary equipment and personnel, and suggestions for analyzing the data. The data obtained using these standard methods are comparable across sites and through time and, as a result, are extremely useful for making decisions about habitat protection, sustained use, and restoration—decisions that are particularly relevant for threatened amphibian populations.

Book excerpt: 'Ocean Shores to Desert Dunes' is an award-winning book that takes the reader on a journey through the landscapes of New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, describing the 12 broad formations - or types - of vegetation, and 99 vegetation classes. Each vegetation class is comprehensively described, including where each occurs and why, interesting aspects of its ecology, evolution, history and development, as well as current conservation and management challenges. This spectacularly illustrated book includes more than 100 maps and 400 colour photographs, species lists for each of the vegetation classes, and extensive botanical and general indexes. 'Ocean Shores to Desert Dunes' is the perfect companion to the many plant identification guides currently available, and is based on a significant new state-wide map and vegetation classification by the author.

Book excerpt: The loss and fragmentation of natural habitats is one of the major issues in wildlife management and conservation. Habitat "corridors" are sometimes proposed as an important element within a conservation strategy. Examples are given of corridors both as pathways and as habitats in their own right. Includes detailed reviews of principles relevant to the design and management of corridors, their place in regional approaches to conservation planning, and recommendations for research and management.

Book excerpt: The foreted land to the south of the Blackwood River, including the Donnybrook Sunkland to the south and east of Busselton was surveyed for flora and fauna over a 12-year period between 1970 and 1982. A total of 19 surveys were carried out during the period. Results of these surveys indicate that the area contains a rich and varied flora and fauna, a high proportion of which area species endemic to the south-west. Some of these species are entirely restricted to the survey area. Several areas of outstanding flora and fauna values are identified. Distinct trends in the distribution of fauna, which were related to climatic factors, were recognized, but no faunal regions or zones could be identified. The area, consisting largely of State Forest, is an outslanding reserve for many plants and animals unique to the south-west.
