Book excerpt: English summary: Among the numerous coevals of the 15th century who were eager to improve the condition of the church and the world, Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464) is certainly one of the most interesting ones. He dedicated most of his lifetime to reforming, the marks of his activites being considerable: the Concile of Basle, his legation in Germany, his years as a bishop of Brixen, the foundation of a hospital in Kues, and his reform proposals as a cardinal in the Papal States. The broad horizon of the theologist, philosopher and canonist allows - beyond the reconstruction of single episodes - a comprehensive historical and theoretical approach to the problem of reform. This book binds together contributions of medieval historians and historians of philosophy. On the one hand it aims to expose the reform ideas and narratives standing behind Cusanus' activities, including their contradictions, and on the other hand to further put these narratives in the context of their theological and philosophical implications, as they appear in his theoretical writings.

This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a new approach to Spanish Baroque drama, inspired by Foucauldian discourse archeology, whose rare fusion of meticulous philology and ambitious theory will be exciting and fruitful both for specialists of Spanish literature and for anyone invested in the history of European thought. Detailed readings are dedicated to some of the most prominent plays by Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca, both autos sacramentales (El viaje del alma; El divino Orfeo; La lepra de Constantino) and comedias (El castigo sin venganza; El príncipe constante; El médico de su honra). The "archeological" perspective cast on the plays implies an integration of their discourse-historical "foils", from pagan antiquity through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, as well as a discussion of related discourses, mainly theological, philosophical and historiographical. A separate "excursus" suggests a reconsideration of the common manner in which the discursive relation between the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Mannerism and the Baroque is conceptualized.

Book excerpt: Professor Otto Demus's work on Byzantine art represents one of the great original contributions to the subject made in this century. His early studies in the 1930s on the "mosaics of Greece were followed by his fundamental work on the mosaics of Norman Sicily after the Second World War, and the later great studies of the decoration of San Marco in Venice, which remained throughout his abiding concern. These two volumes make available the papers Otto Demus published in a variety of periodicals in the course of a long and highly productive working lifetime. They have been edited and revised by Dr. Irmgard Hutter, a pupil and friend of the author. Volume I includes Demus's papers on Byzantine art in general, including his outstanding "contribution to the study of the development of Palaeologan art. His interest in the working methods of the artists is also evident. The volume includes most of his papers on Byzantine mosaics, mural painting, icons, enamels and manuscript illumination. Volume II deals with the author's lifelong interest, the mosaics of the church of San Marco in Venice. The papers reproduced here cover the history and decoration of this great monument, including the sculpture. The influence of the San Marco mosaics and Byzantine art on the art of western Europe is also covered.
