Book excerpt: This review examines the potentials of renewable energy resources in Nigeria which is aimed at reducing dependence on the carbon-based energy sources. The theoretical and technical potentials of renewable energy resources (solar radiation, biogas, wind, and hydropower energy) indicated that Nigeria has strong potential of meeting energy demand for agricultural, domestic and industrial without relying on fossil fuel. An average daily solar radiation (Rs) and wind energy of 12.1MJ/m2 to 28.5 MJ/m2, 3.3 m/s to 7.0 m/s in the coastal to the northern part of the country could generate 427,000MW, hydropower, biogas and wind energy were estimated to have energy potentials of 11,000MW and 6.6 million (m3) of biogas daily. The CO2 emits from renewable energy source is very low when compared with the conventional energy source and this makes it to be environmentally and human friendly. The current energy stress in Nigeria can be improved by formulating robust energy-based policies and researches capable of achieving some level of renewable energy development. Thus, strong internship between the developed world where lot of discoveries and breakthrough had made on the subject matter and developing is greatly encouraged.

Book excerpt: The urgent need to de-carbonize the world economies, ensure energy security and sustainable development has engender a global resort to renewable energy resource utilization. While some jurisdictions are investing heavily on its deployment, Nigeria seems to be lagging behind, perhaps, due to its continuous reliance on a fossil fuel driven economy and other systemic challenges. The paper explore the potentials and benefits of renewable energy resource utilization in Nigeria. The paper argue that in line with global trends, if Nigeria truly desire to meet its commitments under the Paris Accord and Sustainable Development Goals targets, it should accelerate its investment and development of renewable energy resources. To surmount barriers and challenges militating against Nigeria's renewable energy agenda, the researcher concludes by recommending the removal of fuel subsidy to allow for a level playing ground for investors; and the need to leverage on investment opportunities by enacting fiscal laws and policies that encourage foreign investment, promote public private partnerships, facilitate Research and Development, ensure efficient technology transfer, and proper development of renewable energy resources in the country.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy is an essential requirement for a reasonable socio economic development in a country; however, its provision depends on availability of energy sources and the require d investment. Nigeria possesses abundant deposits of energy sources ranging from fossil fuel to renewable energy sources. Over the years, the level of production of energy from these sources has been considerably low. The present level of electricity supply is short of demand and the supply is not reliable. As the country is experiencing rapid growth in population, adequate energy provision is necessary for corresponding level of production and development. The need for sustainable and renewable sources of energy has emerged globally owing to environmental issues associated with the use of conventional fuel. In order to consider the possibility of harnessing the solar energy resource in northern Nigeria, this study explores the potential contribution of the adoption of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology to the energy system in the far northern States of Nigeria. These States are chosen because the region lies within a high sunshine belt and thus having a daily average DNI of 6.2 KWh/m2 / day and an annual average of 2320 KWh/m2/yr. The annual average DNI in the region is a bit higher than that of the Andasol CSP plant in Spain which is 2090 KWh/m2/yr. The thesis seeks to uncover the potential for CSP in Nigeria, and determine when the cost of energy from CSP will become competitive with the cost of energy from conventional power. Using three possible economic growth scenarios (reference (7%), high (10%) and optimistic (13%) economic growth scenarios) to model future energy demand and supply from CSP and conventional gas plant. The results obtained show possible competition from potential CSP plant in Nigeria depending on the international and domestic gas market."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted an ambitious strategy to make Nigeria the world’s 20th largest economy by 2020. Sustaining such a pace of growth will entail rapid expansion of the level of activity in key carbon-emitting sectors, such as power, oil and gas, agriculture and transport. In the absence of policies to accompany economic growth with a reduced carbon foot-print, emissions of greenhouse gases could more than double in the next two decades. This study finds that there are several options for Nigeria to achieve the development objectives of vision 20:2020 and beyond, but stabilizing emissions at 2010 levels, and with domestic benefits in the order of 2 percent of GDP. These benefits include cheaper and more diversified electricity sources; more efficient operation of the oil and gas industry; more productive and climate –resilient agriculture; and better transport services, resulting in fuel economies, better air quality, and reduced congestion. The study outlines several actions that the Federal Government could undertake to facilitate the transition towards a low carbon economy, including enhanced governance for climate action, integration of climate consideration in the Agriculture Transformation Agenda, promotion of energy efficiency programs, scale-up of low carbon technologies in power generation (such as renewables an combined cycle gas turbines), and enhance vehicle fuel efficiency.

Book excerpt: The Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted Vision 20: 2020--an ambitious strategy to make Nigeria the world's 20th largest economy by 2020. In the absence of policies to accompany economic growth in key carbon-emitting sectors with a reduced carbon footprint, emission of greenhouse gases could more than double in the next two decades. To evaluate how to achieve the objectives of Vision 20: 2020 with reduced carbon emissions, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the World Bank undertook a multiyear program of analytical work. The summary results of this program are contained in a separate book (published in the World Bank's "Directions in Development" series) entitled Low-Carbon Development: Opportunities for Nigeria, which concludes that Nigeria can achieve its development objectives, while stabilizing emissions at 2010 levels and providing domestic benefi ts on the order of 2 percent of GDP. This volume is a collection of the background technical reports on the four sectors of inquiry: agriculture and land use, oil and gas, power, and transport. It contains details on the data, methodology, and assumptions used throughout the analysis. For agriculture and land use, the study team developed an agriculture production growth model, which permits the evaluation of sector emissions in both a reference and a low-carbon scenario. The study fi nds that low-carbon practices have signifi cant potential to make the sector more productive and more climate-resilient. For the oil and gas sector, the analysis assesses the potential of accelerated phase-put of gas fl aring, reduction of leakages, and increased energy effi ciency in the operation of facilities, to both reduce the sector's emission and contribute to the industry's net revenues and growth. The analysis of the power sector shows how the country can expand power generation and broaden access to electricity while reducing associated emissions, through renewable energy, energy effi ciency, and lower-carbon technologies in thermal power generation. Finally, this analysis assesses the expected growth in CO2 emissions from on-road transport under a normal business development scenario up to the year 2035, and it identifi es actions at national and local levels that would reduce this growth, resulting in fuel economies, better air quality, and reduced congestion. Assessing Low-Carbon Development in Nigeria: An Analysis of Four Sectors outlines several actions that the Nigerian government could undertake to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Book excerpt: The energy crisis in Nigeria is such that has brought about development setbacks, environmental degradation, increased poverty rate, etc and these must be addressed to bring about socio-economic development. The key to improving energy access lies in the ability of the government to include renewable energy sources like solar, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass, as part of the nation's energy mix. However, the government can only achieve this feat where private investors (domestic and foreign) are actively involved. The Renewable energy industry in Nigeria is driven by Policies and most recently, the National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Policy, 2015. Policies in Nigeria have been criticised for lacking in implementation, consistency, stability and lacking binding effects. These factors send the wrong signals to potential investors who need to be assured of security over investments made. Thus, it is therfore pertinent to have a legislation on renewable energy that would complement already existing policies and guarantee justice in event of a breach. The law can create an enabling environment for potential investors to drive renewable energy development in Nigeri

Book excerpt: In this book, a number of long-term energy scenarios are developed for Nigeria considering the impact of vital factors that may influence energy policies in the country’s future energy system. The energy scenarios were developed through the Long-Range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP) model. The model identified the future energy demand and supply pattern using a least-cost combination of technology options while limiting the emission of greenhouse gases. The book presents four scenarios, and key parameters considered include GDP, households, population, urbanization and the growth rates of energy-intensive sectors. Further, it highlights the findings of the cost-benefit analysis, which reveal the costs of implementing selected policies and strategies in Nigeria, including those focusing on energy efficiency and fuel/technology switching. The book also discusses the application of the LEAP-OSeMOSYS Model in order to identify lowest-cost power plants for electricity generation. Some sustainable strategies that can ensure a low carbon development in Nigeria are also explored on the basis of successful country cases in relation to the Nigerian LEAP model. As such, the book will help policy makers devise energy and sustainable strategies to achieve low carbon development in Nigeria.

Book excerpt: This Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report (IPCC-SRREN) assesses the potential role of renewable energy in the mitigation of climate change. It covers the six most important renewable energy sources - bioenergy, solar, geothermal, hydropower, ocean and wind energy - as well as their integration into present and future energy systems. It considers the environmental and social consequences associated with the deployment of these technologies, and presents strategies to overcome technical as well as non-technical obstacles to their application and diffusion. SRREN brings a broad spectrum of technology-specific experts together with scientists studying energy systems as a whole. Prepared following strict IPCC procedures, it presents an impartial assessment of the current state of knowledge: it is policy relevant but not policy prescriptive. SRREN is an invaluable assessment of the potential role of renewable energy for the mitigation of climate change for policymakers, the private sector, and academic researchers.
