Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of European expansion, pearls became potent symbols of imperial supremacy. Pearls for the Crown demonstrates how European art legitimated racialized hierarchies and inequitable notions about humanity and nature that still hold sway today. When Christopher Columbus encountered pristine pearl beds in southern Caribbean waters in 1498, he procured the first source of New World wealth for the Spanish Crown, but he also established an alternative path to an industry that had remained outside European control for centuries. Centering her study on a selection of key artworks tied to the pearl industry, Mónica Domínguez Torres examines the interplay of materiality, labor, race, and power that drove artistic production in the early modern period. Spanish colonizers exploited the expertise and forced labor of Native American and African workers to establish pearling centers along the coasts of South and Central America, disrupting the environmental and demographic dynamics of their overseas territories. Drawing from postcolonial theory, material culture studies, and ecocriticism, Domínguez Torres demonstrates how, through use of the pearl, European courtly art articulated ideas about imperial expansion, European superiority, and control over nature, all of which played key roles in the political circles surrounding the Spanish Crown. This highly anticipated interdisciplinary study will be welcomed by scholars of art history, the history of colonial Latin America, and ecocriticism in the context of the Spanish colonies.

Yet there are other traces of the past available to historians: the material things that people have chosen, made, and used. This book examines how material culture can enhance historians' understanding of the past, both worldwide and across time. The successful use of material culture in history depends on treating material things of many kinds not as illustrations, but as primary evidence. Each kind of material thing-and there are many-requires the application of interpretive skills appropriate to it. These skills overlap with those acquired by scholars in disciplines that may abut history but are often relatively unfamiliar to historians, including anthropology, archaeology, and art history. Creative historians can adapt and apply the same skills they honed while studying more traditional text-based documents even as they borrow methods from these fields. They can think through familiar historical problems in new ways. They can also deploy material culture to discover the pasts of constituencies who have left few or no traces in written records. The authors of this volume contribute case studies arranged thematically in six sections that respectively address the relationship of history and material culture to cognition, technology, the symbolic, social distinction, and memory. They range across time and space, from Paleolithic to Punk.

Book excerpt: For the first time, National Museums Scotland's important collection of Renaissance jewelry from Scotland is considered together in this fully illustrated volume alongside significant items from the Royal Collection. The book was inspired by the acquisition by NMS of the extraordinary Fettercairn Jewel: the fine iconography of this exquisitely enameled locket held coded messages for its sixteenth century owners, and continues to intrigue its viewers today. Renaissance jewelry like this in Scotland is particularly notable given the rare survival of such jewels from the sixteenth century. Some of these owe their survival thanks to their association with Mary, Queen of Scots. Elite Renaissance men and women commissioned, wore and gifted intricate and valuable pieces of jewelry. For most, this was not simply adornment, but used to communicate messages and display status. These were intimate personal possessions and suggest the meanings invested in them by their owners, that resonate with audiences today. Such jewels are evocative objects. This lavishly illustrated book brings together expert voices from the key Scottish collections (National Museums Scotland, National Galleries of Scotland, Royal Collection Trust) to explore the making, meaning and function of such jewelry in sixteenth century Scotland, and features an interpretation of the Fettercairn Jewel by the jewelry expert Geoffrey Munn. It reveals hitherto underappreciated evidence of goldsmithing in Scotland while considering significant continental influences in the design and production of jewelry. Given the ephemeral nature, and rare survival of Renaissance jewelry, its authors also suggest alternative ways of tracing the gems that have gone, in the portraits and inventories of Scottish men and women.

Book excerpt: This issue focuses on the museum's Alsdorf Collection of Renaissance jewelry, which comprises a splendid array of secular and religious jewels produced in workshops in England, France, Spain, Germany, and Italy. Among pieces represented in this issue are crowns, pendants, and cameos, crafted from a wide variety of materials and richly adorned with pearls, precious stones, and enamel. Designed as a companion to the installation at the museum of the Alsdorf jewels, this publication presents entries which capture the collection's geographic, chronological, and stylistic breadth. Also featured are introductory essays which explore the art of jewelry-making and the social and sacred significance of jewelry-wearing in renaissance culture. This issue of Museum Studies draws on a wealth of recent research in the field, and will appeal to specialists as well as to a broad audience of individuals interested in jewelry and its uses.
