Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Yukon The following chapters relate to my experiences in the Yukon from the spring of 1898 until the autumn of 1909, comprising a period of over eleven consecutive years. The first three years were employed principally in mining in the Yukon district, but owing to a severe accident, which resulted in permanent lameness, I was obliged to abandon mining altogether. For the next two years I was confined to Dawson, but when my foot became rather stronger I moved to the Pelly River, a tributary of the Yukon, and re mained in the vicinity for about six years, where I gained my experience in fur and trapping. So many books have appeared on the Yukon and northern regions that the subject has possibly become rather hackneyed. At the same time, I became acquainted with incidents and methods of life in those regions which I have not seen printed in other volumes, and which to a few people may possibly be of some interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on an Exploration in the Yukon District, N. W. T: Adjacent Northern Portion of British Columbia As a result of the late remarkable discoveries of gold in the Klondike region, much general attention has been awakened in the entire Yukon District of Canada, and so great a demand has arisen for the reports and maps of the Yukon Expedition of 1887-88, that the supply of these is now practically exhausted. In order to meet the inquiries for these reports and maps which still continue and appear likely to increase in number, it has been decided to reprint the writer's report of 1887, together with the parts of Mr. R. G. McConnell's report of 1888 that relate to the Yukon district. The present publication thus includes in a convenient form all the information directly obtained by the Geological Survey of Canada, comprising practically all the geological data available for the Yukon district; constituting a basis of fact upon which further investigation may proceed, and one likely to be of use to the prospector and miner by placing him in possession of the main structural features of the country. The "Report on the Yukon District and adjacent Northern Portion of British Columbia," is reprinted without change, but the appendices have been omitted. The titles of these appendices are as follows: - I. Notes on the distribution of trees and of certain shrubs. II. Notes on the Indian tribes. III. List of plants collected. IV. Zoology. V.Notes on the lithological character of some of the rocks collected, VI. Meteorological observations. VII. Summary of astronomical observations. All that part of Mr. McConnell's report which relates to the Liard River below Fort Liard, near the eastern boundary of British Columbia, together with that dealing with the Mackenzie valley proper, are not reproduced; but that relating to the Porcupine and Yukon Rivers is here reprinted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wilderness of the Upper Yukon: A Hunter's Explorations for Wild Sheep in Mountains This book is a record of my field experiences while engaged in studying the color variations of the wild sheep of Yukon Territory. It is an attempt to give a detailed account strictly from the point of view of a hunter interested in natural history. Most parts of the Territory which are inhabited by sheep are also the favorite abodes of moose and grizzly bears, and some of them of caribou. The black bear inhabits the forests everywhere below timber-line; the white goat lives exclusively in the humid belt of the Coast ranges. No other game animals exist in the Yukon wilderness. Most of the fur-bearing animals of the Hudsonian zone are abundant on the timbered slopes immediately below the sheep ranges. The number of species of mammals and birds is small. In the North, wild sheep dwell exclusively on high mountains, above timber-line, usually well back within the ranges. Nearly all of the mountains on which I hunted, with the exception of Plateau Mountain and those near Watson River, were untrodden by the foot of white man or Indian. The wilderness was primeval, the sheep practically undisturbed, the other game animals seldom hunted. It was not possible to find guides, for there were none. It was necessary not only to search out a route to the mountains, but also to find the ranges occupied by sheep. I have, therefore, adopted the subtitle, "A Hunter's Explorations for Wild Sheep in Sub-Arctic Mountains."
