Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the South Seas San Francisco was the same place, with the same curious feeling of its being cold while one felt the heat; but there was neither place, time nor anything for me there were things to buy and replace all sorts of things had been forgotten, and now more than ever I realize that it is well to be overloaded even if I believe that later I should feel it. What I want I want badly, and San Francisco is not a place to get it in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mystic Isles of the South Seas This is a simple record of my days and nights, my thoughts and dreams, in the mystic isles of the South Seas, written without authority of science or exactitude of knowledge. These are merely the vivid impressions of my life in Tahiti and Moorea, the merriest, most fascinating world of all the cosmos; of the songs I sang, the dances I danced, the men and women, white and tawny, with whom I was joyous or melancholy; the adventures at sea or on the reef, upon the sapphire lagoon, and on the silver beaches of the most beautiful of tropics. In this volume are no discoveries unless in the heart of the human. I went to the islands below the equator with one thought - to play. All that I have set down here is the profit of that spirit. The soul of man is afflicted by the machine he has fashioned through the ages to achieve his triumph over matter. In this light chronicle I would offer the reader an anodyne for a few hours, of transport to the other side of our sphere, where are the loveliest scenes the eyes may find upon the round of the globe, the gentlest climate of all the latitudes, the most whimsical whites, and the dearest savages I have known. Mystic Isles of the South Seas precedes in experience my former book, White Shadows in the South Seas, and will be followed by A tolls of the Sun, which will be the account of a visit to, and a dwelling on, the blazing coral wreaths of the Dangerous Archipelago, where the strange is commonplace, and the marvel is the probability of the hour. Such fantastic pursuit is not for him who is bound by ties of home and duty and fortune to-make. He has other adventure at his own door, sterner fights to wage, and, perhaps, higher rewards to gain. Still, the ledgers close sometimes on a sigh, and by the cosiest fireside one will see in the coals pictures that have nothing to do with wedding rings or balances at the bank. The rest rise up like old memories of delight graceful shapes, careless, beautiful, with a kind of undying youth in them, which I frankly told you, when we first met many years after they were writ ten, I was disappointed not to find in you. You did not retort, and of course I was not reasonable. But my words should have served to show you how fast a hold your Idyls had kept on my fancy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures in the South Seas Many of those who oppose the work of evangelizing hea then races assert that a people found in heathenism are better left as they happen to be when discovered. This amazing allegation has sometimes been made even in relation to the wild tribes of the South Seas. T 0 take such a position is to acknowledge that for these island peoples unrestrained murder is better than the enjoyment of life under conditions of peace and safety; that unrelieved misery is better than joy and happiness, secured to them by an ordered govern ment; that enslaving fear is better than the confiding trust that now marks their intertribal and interisland relationships; that the intrenched superstitions of idol and demon worship are better than the comforts and blessings of the Christian faith; that their former loathsome depravity is better than the comparative refinement and elevation of their present condition; that brutalized immorality is better than gospel morality; and that their former terribly dwarfed mentality is better than their present enlightenment and remarkable mental development. These assertions seldom come from those who are not actively opposed to the application of gospel principles in these islands. The mental awakening which invariably fol iows the renouncement of heathenism and the acceptance of the gospel by these native races, is neither wanted nor encouraged by those who maintain such an attitude. Such persons are opposed to the assertion of gospel power any where. Therefore, they are opposed to its asserting itself in the South Sea Islands. Their purpose is selfish. Their attitude is preposterous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 'i agree with you the lights seem a little turned down, ' so you write to me now; 'the truth is I was far through, and came none too soon to the South Seas, where I was to recover peace of body and mind. And however low the lights, the stuff is true. Well, inasmuch as the South Sea sirens have breathed new life into you, we are bound to be heartily grateful to them, though as they keep you so far removed from us, it is difficult not to bear them a grudge; and if they would reconcile us quite, they have but to do two things morewto teach you new tales that shall charm us like your old, and to spare you, at least once in a while in summer, to climates within reach of us who. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ebbing of the Tide: South Sea Stories A boy and a girl sat by the rocky margin of a deep mountain pool in Ponape in the North Pacific. The girl was weaving a basket from the leaves of a cocoanut. As she wove she sang the "Song of Luliban," and the boy listened intently. "'Tis a fine song that thou singest, Niya," said the boy, who came from Metalanien and was a stranger; "and who was Luliban, and Red-Hair the White Man?" "O Guk!" said Niya, wonderingly, "hast never heard in Metalanien of Luliban, she who dived with one husband and came up with another - in this very pool?" "What new lie is this thou tellest to the boy because he is a stranger?" said a White Man, who lay resting in the thick grass waiting for the basket to be finished, for the three were going further up the mountain stream to catch crayfish. "Lie?" said the child; "nay, 'tis no lie. Is not this the Pool of Luliban, and do not we sing the 'Song of Luliban, ' and was not Red-Hair the White Man - he that lived in Jakoits and built the big sailing boat for Nanakin, the father of Nanakin, my father, the chief of Jakoits?"
