As a young man, not as yet out of his teens, having chosen to engage in business rather than enter college, he sailed on the Samuel Appleton from New York bound for Hong Kong. He was not destined to reach Cathay: the long voyage was interrupted by rough weather off the Cape of Good Hope and the ship was obliged to put into Port Elizabeth in Algoa Bay. Opportunity seemed to offer for an enterprising Yankee in the Cape Colony and he remained there for two years and a half.
