Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover lost history in the dark waters of Lake George. Lake George is bustling with boaters, swimmers, fishermen and many others, enjoying its scenic, quintessentially Adirondack shores. But the depths below hide a whole other world--one of shipwrecks and lost history. Entombed are remnants of Lake George's important naval heritage, such as the legendary Land Tortoise radeau, which sank in 1758. Other wrecks include the steam yacht Ellide and the first famed Minne-Ha-Ha. These waters hold secrets, too, like the explanation behind the 1926 disappearance of two hunters. After years of exploration across the lake's bottomlands, underwater archaeologist Joseph W. Zarzynski and archeological diver Bob Benway present the most intriguing discoveries among more than two hundred known shipwreck sites.

Book excerpt: The Pelican Island Audubon Society will publish Reflections of Blue Cypress Photographs, History, and Poems of the Headwater Lake of the St. Johns River. Second Edition authored by Dr. Richard H. and Dr. Juanita N. Baker. The book provides a reflective and artistic perspective of Blue Cypress Lake today, taking readers on a journey to one of Florida's natural treasures. Since 1990, the Bakers have visited Blue Cypress Lake many times, often spending the night listening to a steady chorus of frogs and an occasional owl and gator. Rising before the sun, they witnessed the early changing light, and photographed and savored each moment on the lake. Their book includes photographs and poems, and provides a vivid and factual account of the lake's history. By publishing Reflections of Blue Cypress, Baker's beautiful tribute to people everywhere who are interested in wildlife, conservation, natural history, photography, or experiencing a Florida special place, Audubon hopes to: 1 Enhance awareness of the unique natural environment of Indian River County, Florida 2 Advocate preserving what is left of our remaining precious habitat and native species 3 Illustrate the delicate balance of nature and the tremendous impact that even slight human influences can have 4 Describe the unique circumstances that have preserved this lake, encouraging us to take action immediately to make a difference 5 Increase public awareness of our chapter's goals 6 Raise funds to support the chapter's education and environmental activities Audubon is honored to have Dr. George Schaller of the Wilderness Conservation Society write the forward for the book. George Schaller's studies in Africa, the Himalayas, Tibet, China, and South America have been the bases for his numerous scientific and popular writings. The winner of several awards, including the National Book award, he has authored 15 books, including The Serengeti Lion, Stones of Silence, The Year of the Gorilla, and The Last Panda. The Pelican Island Audubon Society is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society dedicated to the preservation and protection of animals, plants, and natural communities in Indian River County through advocacy, education, and public awareness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1900, John Apperson, a young man from Virginia, began working for General Electric in Schenectady, New York. An avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, Apperson soon found others interested in Adirondack sports such as ice-fishing and skate-sailing, and they started taking camping trips into the north country. He discovered Lake George one summer while attending a boat race, and thus began his lifelong love affair with the magnificent scenery. Apperson devoted his energy and resources to saving the land from various threats, including commercial development, logging, illegal squatters, and erosion. Apperson launched a two-pronged strategy, promoting Lake George for its recreational potential while recruiting people to help repair the shores of islands. He earned the respect of leading politicians, philanthropists, and journalists, including George Foster Peabody, New York governor Al Smith, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. His actions brought him into open conflict with powerful adversaries, too.

Book excerpt: What was it like growing up white in Mississippi as the Civil Rights Movement exploded in the 1950s and '60s. How did white children reconciled the decency and fairness taught by their parents with the indecency and unfairness of the Mississippi Way of Life, the euphemism applied to the pervasive Jim Crow. How did the Civil Rights Movement influence white kids coming of age in the most segregated place in America? Won Over, a memoir, examines these questions as it traces the journey of United States District Judge William Alsup, born white in 1945 to hard-working parents in Mississippi. They believed in segregation. But they also taught their children fairness and decency and therein lay the conflict, a struggle at the core of the human predicament in the South. As Won Over recalls near its outset, the author's earliest doubt about the system came at age twelve when what he'd thought stood as an abandoned shack at the bottom of a sand quarry turned out to be a school for black kids, whom we saw playing in the mud outside its door. At the end, Won Over reflects on a 1966 challenge by the author and his college roommate to the Mississippi Speaker Ban, an official rule against any "controversial" speaker coming onto a college campus in Mississippi, a rule used to quash their invitation to the state president of the NAACP to speak at their college, Mississippi State University. After a tense showdown, the roommates won that challenge. In January 1967, Aaron Henry became the first black ever to speak on a white college campus in Mississippi, receiving a standing ovation. The memoir traces the influences that drew the author from traditional Southern attitudes toward a color-blind ideal. Those influences included his older sister, Willanna, his closest circle of friends, a charismatic mentor in college, and the moral force of the Civil Rights Movement. Won Over recounts their steps along that journey — a counter protest to a John Birch Society billboard calling for the impeachment of Chief Justice Earl Warren; meeting personally with the brother of slain leader Medgar Evers to convey condolences; a letter to the editor of the statewide paper on behalf of his circle of friends declaring "We are for civil rights for Negroes"; joining his college roommate in a rally at Tougaloo College to support the Meredith March Against Racism; and going to the Liberty Baptist Church in Chicago to hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. exhort the faithful in their summer-long protest against housing and employment discrimination. In 1967, William Alsup went on to Harvard Law School, then to clerk for Justice William O. Douglas. He briefly practiced civil rights law in Mississippi before moving to San Francisco, where he became a trial attorney and, in 1999, received an appointment as United States District Judge.
