Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Seventy-Five Years I was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on January 4, 1826; consequently I have nearly completed my eighty-seventh year. Beverly was a town of considerable importance in the Common wealth. It was, as a part of Salem, one of the earliest of the Colonial settlements, many of its citizens had been engaged in foreign commerce sailing from Salem and Boston as well as from Beverly, and some had taken important parts in the polit ical life of State and nation. The leading citizen of that time, and probably for all time, was Nathan Dane, the author of the Ordinance of 1787 for the government of the Northwestern territory, by which slavery was forever excluded from what now constitutes the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. Seldom is it given to man to become the instrument in legislation of such transcendent importance as this which consecrated that vast region forever to Human Freedom. To Dr. Dane also is due the provision in the Constitution prohibiting any State from passing laws impairing the obliga tion of contracts. I remember him very well, an old gentleman with a serene and kindly face. I used to carry to him the N orth American Review and other periodicals for which he and my grandfather, Robert Rantoul, with Dr. Joshua Fisher, were joint subscribers. When I remember my little conversations with one who had been a distinguished member of the Continental Congress it does seem to me a far cry indeed. Book excerpt: More than the average autobiography, this is a fast-moving story that provides an interesting and vivid description of the authoras life experiences in a manner not normally found in a typical autobiography. The author concludes with a chapter commenting on changes that have taken place over the years as well as some of todayas major issues, which could serve as a basis for national debate. The book should be an inspiration to the older population and emphasizes the importance of the consensus of all of the people in determining public policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tucked away in a corner of the University of Texas Medical Branch campus stands a majestic relic of an era long past. Constructed of red pressed brick, sandstone, and ruddy Texas granite, the Ashbel Smith Building, fondly known as Old Red, represents a fascinating page in Galveston and Texas history. It has been more than a century since Old Red welcomed the first group of visionary faculty and students inside its halls. For decades, the medical school building existed at the heart of UTMB campus life, even through periods of dramatic growth and change. In time, however, the building lost much of its original function to larger, more contemporary facilities. Today, as the oldest medical school building west of the Mississippi River, the intricately ornate Old Red sits in sharp contrast to its sleeker neighbors. Old Red: Pioneering Medical Education in Texas examines the life and legacy of the Ashbel Smith Building from its beginnings through modern-day efforts to preserve it. Chapters explore the nascence of medical education in Texas; the supreme talent and genius of Old Red architect, Nicholas J. Clayton; and the lives of faculty and students as they labored and learned in the midst of budget crises, classroom and fraternity antics, death-rendering storms, and threats of closure. The education of the state’s first professional female and minority physicians and the nationally acclaimed work of physician-scientists and researchers are also highlighted. Most of all, the reader is invited to step inside Old Red and mingle with ghosts of the past—to ascend the magnificent cedar staircase, wander the long, paneled hallways, and take a seat in the tiered amphitheater as pigeons fly in and out of windows overhead.

ODD WAYS OF GETTING A LIVING IN PARIS A QUARTER OF A CENTURY AGO. Paris under the second empire furnished innumerable curious subjects for study, and one of the most singular of them which early attracted my attention was the numerous odd ways its more indigent inhabitants had of getting a living. I was first led to interest myself in this strange phase of Parisian life by the reports of some eminent statisticians who had made the social condition of the capital their study, and had come to the astonishing conclusion that every day upwards of five per cent, of the population neither knew how to procure a meal nor where they would sleep at night, and yet nearly the whole of them contrived to fare, after a fashion, before the day was over. "How," it may be asked, "did they manage?" With many this was their own secret, and too frequently a terrible one, divulged only before the police tribunals. Of those who got their living honestly, though none the less precariously, there were many thousands, the mere names of whose pursuits were known to few beside themselves. Even when you heard them you were scarcely the wiser, and had to ask for an explanation, which the chances were you would not comprehend, until more precise details were furnished. Supposing you were told, for instance, that such a person was a "guardian angel," that another "let out meat on hire," or "made soup bubbles," that others were "contractors for harlequins," "dealers in secondhand bread," "painters of turkeys' feet," and "retailers of lighted fuel," you would be puzzled to know the objects of these various callings, and what possible need there could be for their exercise; and yet more or less comfortable livings were being made from them all.
