Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences, Vol. 2 of 2 As in the streets of Edinburgh, for example, on my first evening there On our journey thither he had been wearisome, far from entertaining, mostly silent, having indeed nothing to say. He stalked on gene rally some steps ahead, languidly whistling through his teeth some similitude of a wretched Irish tune, which I knew too well as that of a still more wretched doggrel song called the 'belfast Shoe maker, ' most melancholy to poor me, given up to my bits of reflections in the silence of the moors and hills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Old Edinburgh, Vol. 1 Glimpses of Olden times have a charm for most Of us, and sometimes all the more so if they are not SO very Old as to lie wholly beyond our own per sonal sympathies or local associations. Olden times, indeed! What are they, or when were they? The landing of Julius Caesar is among the Oldest Of definite events for the British historian, but for Rome it is a recent date, and there are many Older things than Rome. Belzoni's mummy was dead, and buried, and embalmed, ere Romulus or Remus had been suckled. AS for us Of the New World, anything dating before the landing Of Columbus is inconceivably ancient; and yet for England that is the time Of the Tudors, - scarcely even medieval. In truth, antiquity is SO relative a thing that it becomes doubtful in these modern days Of ours if anything is really Old. At Francis Allen's, on the Christmas Eve, the Poet Laureate went to Sleep and before morning there came to him King Arthur like a modern gentleman Of stateliest port. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views in Edinburgh and Its Vicinity, Vol. 2 of 2 Virgil, and Homer, with miscellaneous authors, besides producing exercises both in prose and verse, characterized by the most elegant Latinity. The master conducts the whole business of his department for the first year himself, but afterwards calls in the assistance of his monitors, forming for this purpose his class into divisions, the number of which is diminished as the pupils improve. The classes are opened to the inspection of any person at all times, and, besides a public quarterly examination of his own class by the rector, there is a general examination of the whole school in the beginning of August when the Session is about to close. On this occasion the Dux of the rector's class, and the best Greek scholar receive gold medals, and in the other classes, from one third to one fourth of each class, are rewarded with prizes of books, those at the top getting the most valuable. The course commences in October, and the vacation is six weeks or two months. The hours of attendance are from 9 to 11, and from 19 to Q during the earlier part of the course, but an additional hour is given in summer for the purpose of preparing for a respectable appearance at the general exami nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Edinburgh Review, Vol. 2 of 3 But though a poet is thus likely to be a gentler critic of poetry than another, zmd, by having a finer sense of its beauties, to be better qualified for the most pleasing and important part of his office, there is another requi site in which we should be afraid he would generally be fhund wanting, especially in a work of the large and comprehensive nature of that now before us we mean, in absolute fairness and impartiality towards the different schools or styles of poetry which he may have occasion to estimate and compare. Even the most common and miscellaneous reader has a peculiar taste in this way and has generally erected for himself some obscure but exclusive standard of excellence, by which he measures the pretensions of all that come under his view. One man admires witty and satirical poetry, and sees no beauty in rural imagery or picturesque description; while another doats on Idyls and Pastorals, and will not allow the affairs of polite life to form a subject for verse. One is for simplicity and pathos; another for magnifi cence and splendour. One is devoted to the Muse of terror; another to that of love. Some are all for blood and battles, and some for music and moonlight some for emphatic sentiments, and some for melodious verses. Liven those whose taste is the least cxclusix c, hate u6 campbell - fair To all the schools or poetry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to the Edinburgh Review, Vol. 2 of 4 The only other part of Lord Holland's statement, to which we think it necessary to call the attention of the reader, is that in which he thinks it necessary to explain the peculiar notions which Mr. Fox entertained on the subject of historical composition, and the very rigid laws to which he had subjected himself in the execution of his important task. It is therefore necessary to Observe, that he had formed his plan SO exclusively on the model of ancient writers, that he not only felt some repugnance to the modern practice of notes, but he thought that all which an historian wished to say, should be introduced as part of a continued narration, and never assume the appearance of a digression, much less of a dissertation annexed to it. From the period, therefore, that he closed his Introductory Chapter, he defined his duty as an author, to consist in recounting the facts as they arose; or in his simple and forcible language, in telling the story of those times. A con versation which passed on the subject of the literature of the age of James the Second, proves his rigid adherence to these ideas; and per haps the substance of it may serve to illustrate and explain them. In Speaking Of the writers of that period, he lamented that he had not devised a method of interweaving any account of them or their works, much less any criticism on their style, into his history. On my sug geeting the example of Hume and Voltaire, who had discussed such topics at some length, either at the end of each reign, or in a separate chapter, he Observed, with much commendation of their execution of it, that such a contrivance might be a good mode of writing critical essays, but that it was, in his Opinion, incompatible with the nature of his undertaking, which, if it ceased to be a narrative, ceased to be a history. - p. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Edinburgh Sketches and Memories On a clear day the inhabitants of Edinburgh, by merely ascending the Calton Hill or any other of the familiar heights in or around their city, can have a view of nearly the whole length of their noble estuary, the Firth of Forth. To the right or east, its entrance from the open sea, between the two shires of Fife and Haddington, is marked most conspicuously on the Haddingtonshire side by a distant conical mound, called Berwick Law, rising with peculiar distinctness from the northward curve of land which there bounds the horizon. It is thither that the eye is directed if it would watch the first appearance of steamers and ships from any part of the world that may be bound up the Firth for Edinburgh by its port of Leith. Moving thence westward, the eye can command easily the twenty miles more of the Firth which these ships and steamers have to traverse. The outlines of both shores, though the breadth between them averages twelve miles, may be traced with wonderful sharpness, pleasingly defined as they are by their little bays and promontories, and by the succession of towns and fishing villages with which they are studded.
