If the company increased their expenditure by extending the canal down the valley, they would have still Miller & Lux, Chapman, Paige, J. D. Patterson and other large holders of land in their way, and the results would probably be the same. The smaller landowners and farmers may think it a piece of sheer meanness on the part of the present company in not extending the canal to Stanislaus and San Joaquin.counties, but these are the real facts. Mr. Brereton in August, 1871, when reporting on the prospects of the location of this land to some of the parties who incorporated the present company, and desired to purchase the original company's rights from Messrs. Bensley & Co., alluded to these matters in very forcible terms as follows: "With reference to the revenues to be derived from this project, I would advise you to examine very carefully into the contracts which, I am told, have been already entered into with some of the land owners and farmers. "I find that on the first fifty miles of this canal, which is about the length that this canal will be avilable, Messrs. Miller & Lux own nearly all the land, and could therefore take all the water. I am told that these parties own over 300,000 acres lying along and below the canal, and if they thought proper to place say 50,000 acres of this under cultivation, they would require all your water. "I do not know what are the terms of the contracts between this company and these parties, but it appears to me that unless these parties make all the ditches at their own expense, and in a manner satisfactory to the company, the company should obtain $5 an acre for each crop of rice, beets, cotton and fibers, and $3 per acre for wheat and grass crops;...

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive environmental history of California’s Great Central Valley, where extensive freshwater and tidal wetlands once provided critical habitat for tens of millions of migratory waterfowl. Weaving together ecology, grassroots politics, and public policy, Philip Garone tells how California’s wetlands were nearly obliterated by vast irrigation and reclamation projects, but have been brought back from the brink of total destruction by the organized efforts of duck hunters, whistle-blowing scientists, and a broad coalition of conservationists. Garone examines the many demands that have been made on the Valley’s natural resources, especially by large-scale agriculture, and traces the unforeseen ecological consequences of our unrestrained manipulation of nature. He also investigates changing public and scientific attitudes that are now ushering in an era of unprecedented protection for wildlife and wetlands in California and the nation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New River Basin and Lower California Irrigation Enterprise of the California Development Co Character of Soil. - With the exception of acres of Mesa lands under the East branch survey, the entire body of irrigable lands between the Salton Sink, and the River, is an alluvium, formed by the Colorado River. This area embraces no tracts of sand, it is very fertile, and remarkably even in its structure. The soil contains from IO to 20 per cent. Of clay hence is strong and retentive of moisture. Some patches of salt lands exist in Lower California; but these are excluded from our estimate of good land, notwithstanding the fact that local experience has demonstrated that these salt lands are rendered clean and productive by the application of water. The sedimentary deposit is from 20 to 200 feet in depth. Vegetation. - A large part of the Lower California tract is covered with a dense vegetation. Groves of cottonwood, mesquite and willow alternate with areas covered with native grasses, arrow weed, greasewood and wild hemp. In the United States timber is found along the Salton and New Rivers. After heavy rains the country is covered with a heavy growth of pepper grass, which makes excellent forage for cattle.
