Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Recollections of the War of the Rebellion The incidents related in this little volume are chiefly confined to the regiment and batterv to which I belonged, and yet what. Is true of one organization whether in camp or in the field, is to a certain extent, true of others. The drill, the guard duty and the camp sports are essentially the same, and since war means killing, the methods adopted for this purpose in every action, are practicallv the same. The Twenty-third Maine Regiment served its term of enlistment in doing guard dutv on the Potomac, from Alexandria to Harper's Ferry. It had no en gagcment with the enemy, and yet the death rate was uncommonly large, thereby indicating the character of its service The Seventh Maine Battery joined the army of the Potomac in the march to the Wilder ness, and participated in all the subsequent engage ments of that gallant army. There were a number of men, including the writer, who served in both of these organizations and had the varied experience incident to both. There were no two organizations that left the State to aid in putting down the rebel lion, that contained a greater proportion of first class men than the two under consideration. Besides a large number of independent farmers, there were college graduates, merchants, mechanics. Teachers and other professional men. They enlisted from purely patriotic motives, and served with an eye single to the preservation of the Union. More than thirty years have elapsed since the regiment was organized, and many 'of those who survived the war, have since gone the way of all the earth. The scope oi this work will admit of only brief mention of any of them, but if such brief mention shall in any manner serve to keep green their memories and preserve the record of their sacrifices and heroic deeds, its preparation and its publication will not have been in vain. Book excerpt: “Those who enjoyed Jeannette Walls’s The Glass Castle will find much to admire” (Booklist, starred review) in this “thoroughly engrossing” (The New York Times Book Review) memoir about a boy on the run with his mother, as she abducts him to Latin America in search of the revolution. Carol Andreas was a traditional 1950s housewife from a small Mennonite town in central Kansas who became a radical feminist and Marxist revolutionary. From the late sixties to the early eighties, she went through multiple husbands and countless lovers while living in three states and five countries. She took her youngest son, Peter, with her wherever she went, even kidnapping him and running off to South America after his straitlaced father won a long and bitter custody fight. They were chasing the revolution together, though the more they chased it the more distant it became. They battled the bad “isms” (sexism, imperialism, capitalism, fascism, consumerism), and fought for the good “isms” (feminism, socialism, communism, egalitarianism). Between the ages of five and eleven, Peter lived in more than a dozen homes, moving from the comfortably bland suburbs of Detroit to a hippie commune in Berkeley to a socialist collective farm in pre-military coup Chile to highland villages and coastal shantytowns in Peru. When they secretly returned to America they settled down clandestinely in Denver, where his mother changed her name to hide from his father. A “luminous memoir” (Publishers Marketplace, starred review) and “an illuminating portrait of a childhood of excitement, adventure, and love” (Kirkus Reviews) this is an extraordinary account of a deep mother-son bond and the joy and toll of growing up in a radical age. Peter Andreas is an insightful and candid narrator of “a profound and enlightening book that will open readers up to different ideas about love, acceptance, and the bond between mother and son” (Library Journal, starred review).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from These Young Rebels Old Uncle Albert Galusha had little admiration and little use for the young people of his family, and his young people had no admiration and no use for him. He maintained that they lived just to annoy and per plex him, and he called some of them empty-headed rebels and the rest of them dangerous radicals. They agreed in considering him a useless old man, the sort of old man who, if he could, would stand in the way of the world to block its triumphant progress. He never missed one opportunity to express his disapproval and disgust for young people who talked too much and did too little. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Two Years With the Colored Troops The incidents of the voyage it is not necessary to recite to any comrade whose chance it was to make a trip in an army transport, which had long since seen its better days, and which had been practically condemned before Uncle Sam found for it such profit able use. The men packed like sheep In the hold, the officers, though far better off as to quarters, yet crowded too much for convenience and com fort, the inevitable sea-sickness, the scanty rations, and what was worse, the extreme scarcity of water, were annoyances but the counterpart of those en dured by many brave men who preceded and followed us to the scene of duty. But in the main the weath er favored us, and on the hurricane deck we spent the hours off duty, gazing far across the illimitable waste of waters, as day after day we approached a warmer clime with its glowing sunshine and glitter ing waves and the deep blue sky bending down in unbroken circle around us. The rebel cruisers were then in the midst of their destructive work and it was natural, as we caught sight of a distant vessel, to speculate whether it was a friendly or a hostile craft. When we were in the latitude of Charleston. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent rediscovery of Rebel Private: Front and Rear, effectively lost for decades, marks an authentic publishing event in the literature of the Civil War. A rare insight into the conflict from the point of view of a Confederate army enlisted man, this compelling memoir has been hailed by historians as a classic and indispensible key to understanding the Southern perspective. Margaret Mitchell even described it as her single most valuable source of research for Gone With the Wind. This stunning document is the work of a common foot soldier blessed with extraordinary perception and articulateness. After joining the famed Texas Brigade under Stonewall Jackson. Private William A. Fletcher saw action at Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Channcellorsville, and Chickamauga. He was wounded several times and escaped from a moving Union prison train before the South's surrender. In 1907, he published this powerfully evocative account of his exploits, a volume of frank, detailed recollections that spares none of the horror, courage, or absurdity of war. But a fire destroyed all but a few copies before they could be distributed. One copy, however, did make its way to the Library of Congress, where it was eventually discovered. Today, this colorful work has become the voice of the Civil War front-line grunt, speaking to the modern reader with the intensity of personal experience and a vividness of detail that gives it a riveting you-are-there quality.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Vinculis, or the Prisoner of War: Being the Experience of a Rebel in Two Federal Pens, Interspersed With Reminiscences of the Late War, Anecdotes of Southern Generals, Etc I answer, that the Southern people can be expected to have little interest in the American name, while they are denied American privileges, and we shall very contentedly see the American name suffer any reproach that truth can bring upon it. Nor do I think that while Jefferson Davis and C. C. Clay, and their compatriots, are denounced in official proclamations as assassins, the people of the United States can close the mouth of any accuser who offers reproach to the American name.
