(Sobieski.); Passages From the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-9; Musings of an Exile Muscovite ferocity is needed, is there any room to question? Ask the annals of the Spanish Inquisition by what diabolical contrivances the bodies of its victims were enabled to endure such fearful tortures, and still live on for the final agony of the stake. Ask the Czar how the ukase is worded which pro vides that not one of so many thousands condemned to receive from five hundred to three thousand lashes each, should escape by death from enduring the full number. Knowing the amount of blood which the moral and physical frame may lose without losing vitality also, the Czar to-day, no less than the Inquisition in past times, contrives to wring out the full measure. But whether England become the sun of peace and freedom to Europe, or the moon-like satellite revolving round the earth where Russia reigns, it is important for her to become acquainted with the character of a nation, destined either to be her partner in pacifying and re-organising Europe, or the victim of her victorious lion in the sordid com pany of, the spread eagle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After Bread: A Story of Polish Emigrant Life to America ON the waves of the wide ocean rode the German steamer Blucher, on its pas sage from Hamburg to New York. It had been on its way four days. Two days ago it had passed the green coast of Ireland and reached the broad Atlantic. From the deck, as far as the eye could reach, could be seen the gray and green surface, plowed up in furrows and hol lows, rocking heavily, foaming in places, in the distance more dark, where the water joined the sky in a white, cloudy mist. The reflection from the clouds fell some times upon the water, and upon this pearly background was drawn with sharp outlines the figure of the steamer. The ship, with its bow pointing to the west, climbed to the crest of the billows, and then, as if going to drown itself, sank in the trough of the sea; sometimes it disappeared from View, sometimes it was lifted so high on the top of the waves that part of its keel could be seen - still pressed steadily onward. The waves rolled toward it, and it rushed toward the waves and cut them With its prow. Behind it chased, like a gigantic snake, a wide strip of foaming water; several sea-gulls followed in its wake, circling in the air with their wild cries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vivid accounts of life in a Soviet prison camp by the author of Inhuman Land. Interned with thousands of Polish officers in the Soviet prisoner-of-war camp at Starobielsk in September 1939, Józef Czapski was one of a very small number to survive the massacre in the forest of Katyń in April 1940. Memories of Starobielsk portrays these doomed men, some with the detail of a finished portrait, others in vivid sketches that mingle intimacy with respect, as Czapski describes their struggle to remain human under hopeless circumstances. Essays on art, history, and literature complement the memoir, showing Czapski’s lifelong engagement with Russian culture. The short pieces on painting that he wrote while on a train traveling from Moscow to the Second Polish Army’s strategic base in Central Asia stand among his most lyrical and insightful reflections on art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II, Europe witnessed the massive redrawing of national borders and the efforts to make the population fit those new borders. As a consequence of these forced changes, both Lviv and Wrocław went through cataclysmic changes in population and culture. Assertively Polish prewar Lwów became Soviet Lvov, and then, after 1991, it became assertively Ukrainian Lviv. Breslau, the third largest city in Germany before 1945, was in turn "recovered" by communist Poland as Wrocław. Practically the entire population of Breslau was replaced, and Lwów's demography too was dramatically restructured: many Polish inhabitants migrated to Wrocław and most Jews perished or went into exile. The forced migration of these groups incorporated new myths and the construction of official memory projects. The chapters in this edited book compare the two cities by focusing on lived experiences and "bottom-up" historical processes. Their sources and methods are those of micro-history and include oral testimonies, memoirs, direct observation and questionnaires, examples of popular culture, and media pieces. The essays explore many manifestations of the two sides of the same coin—loss on the one hand, gain on the other—in two cities that, as a result of the political reality of the time, are complementary.
