Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1880 edition. Excerpt: ... does he act it with violence, for Love is never even touched with violence. Every one willingly administers every thing to Love; and that which every one voluntarily concedes to another, the laws, which are the kings of the republic, decree that it is just for him to possess. In addition to justice, Love participates in the highest temperance; for if temperance is defined to be the being superior to and holding under dominion pleasures and desires; then Love, than whom no pleasure is more powerful, and who is thus more powerful than all persuasions and delights, must be excellently temperate. In power and valour Mars cannot contend with Love: the love of Venus possesses Mars; the possessor is always superior to the possessed, and he who subdues the most powerful must, of necessity be the most powerful of all. "The justice and temperance and valour of the God have been thus declared;--there remains to exhibit his wisdom. And first, that, like Eryximachus, I may honour my own profession, the God is a wise poet; so wise that he can even make a poet one who was not before: for every one, even if before he were ever so undisciplined, becomes a poet as soon as he is touched by Love;--a sufficient proof that Love is a great poet, and well skilled in that science according to the discipline of music. For what any one possesses not, or knows not, that can he neither give nor teach another. And who will deny that the divine poetry, by which all living things are produced upon the earth, is' harmonized by the wisdom of Love? Is it not evident that Love was the author of all the arts of life with which we are acquainted, and that he whose teacher has been Love, becomes eminent and illustrious, whilst he who knows not Love, remains...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Sculptures in Rome and Florence: Together With a Lucianic Fragment and a Criticism of Peacock's Poem Rhododaphne In writing to Peacock on the 20th of April, 1818, Shelley says, You tell me nothing of Rhododaphne, a book from which, I confess, I expected extraordinary success. Mr. Rossetti (poetical Works, 1878, Vol. 1, page 150) mentions as a minor work of 1818, now perhaps lost, a criticism by Shelley of that poem and I presume it was written in the early part of the year. It seems to have been meant for a newspaper or maga' zine article, and sent to Leigh Hunt, among whose papers it was found by Mr. Townshend Mayer-not, unfors tunately, quite complete. It was either dictated to or transcribed by Mrs. Shelley but the ms, mainly in her writing, has been carefully revised and interpolated by Shelley. It is headed, in review fashion, Rhododaphne or the Thessalian Spell a poema-hoolchams. That book though published anonymously in 1818, is acknowledged in the Collected Works of Thomas Love Peacock, pub lished in 1875, 111 three volumes, by Messrs. R. Bentley Sons. Book excerpt: The original idea for a conference on the "shapes of knowledge" dates back over ten years to conversations with the late Charles Schmitt of the Warburg Institute. What happened to the classifications of the sciences between the time of the medieval Studium and that of the French Encyclopedie is a complex and highly abstract question; but posing it is an effective way of mapping and evaluating long term intellectual changes, especially those arising from the impact of humanist scholarship, the new science of the seventeenth century, and attempts to evaluate, to apply, to reconcile, and to institutionalize these rival and interacting traditions. Yet such patterns and transformations cannot be well understood from the heights of the general history of ideas. Within the ~eneral framework of the organization of knowledge the map must be filled in by particular explorations and soundings, and our project called for a conference that would combine some encyclopedic (as well as interdisciplinary and inter national) breadth with scholarly and technical depth.
