Book excerpt: It was 1941 when Bill McDonald waved goodbye from the troop train. His twelve year old son, Russell, had promised to look after Mum and the girls while his father was away, and surely the war would be over in a few months. But Singapore, the impregnable island fortress, fell to the Japanese and Bill became a Prisoner of War. With courage, laughter and heartache, Bill and his mates struggled with starvation and disease to survive in Borneo. This is Russell’s story too, as he grows up in a rural town, while his Father is away.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the history of rickshaw pullers in Hong Kong and Canton, Reluctant Heroes provides a rich portrait of the urban milieu and life in two contrasting yet interrelated cities in South China. Fung Chi Ming explains the dynamics between the rickshaw pullers' participation in collective action and the intervention of the British colonial and Chinese authorities, and traces the pullers' emergence and eclipse as a political force. Reluctant Heroes is a fascinating study of rickshaw pullers in Hong Kong and Canton. The author reconstructs the daily lives and social environments of rickshaw pullers, the majority of whom were emigrants who differed in the loyalties of dialect, place of origin and kinship. Low- skilled yet partially self-employed, rickshaw pullers relied on entrepreneurial flair, in addition to physical stamina, to tout for fares, thus bridging the culture of petty traders and physical laborers. In the volatile urban environment, they were subjected not just to patron-client problems, but also the directives and regulations of the state, and to interventions of the police, and the British colonial and Chinese authorities. Rickshaw pullers struggled with their adversities and became a political force to be reckoned with. Fung argues that they are "reluctant heroes," since their collective outbursts were authentic protests against encroachments on their livelihood. They were spurred into collective actions that were at times cheered by the public, or embroiled in city politics, thus suffering great losses in political storms, when they would have preferred to lead quiet, anonymous lives. Set against the backdrop of two contrasting yet interrelated cities in South China, Reluctant Heroes brings a richer understanding of urban living through a comparative study of the historic pattern of adaptation in the urban workplace, the powers of the state, and the repertoire of mass activism.

Book excerpt: Sarn just wants to pay off his Indenture, not sort out magical problems until a ghost boy shows up. Compelled to solve the mystery surrounding the boy’s death, so his own son doesn’t pay the price, Sarn sets out on a dangerous quest. But conspirators gather at home, and they seek a crystal to destroy the enchanted forest, and they’ll release an ancient monster and destroy the protections barring the dark lord from this world to get it. Sarn must dig deep and use everything he’s learned about magic to combat them. But he’s only one mage, facing more than one unimaginable evil. How could he possibly prevail? With a little help from his twin, he just might. Sovvan doesn’t let a little thing like death stand between her and her family. When the dark lord comes for Sarn, she’ll travel to Heaven, Hell, and everywhere in between to save him. But Sovvan needs to evade the army of memory-eating creatures searching for her to have any hope of helping him, and somehow keep her memories intact. She can’t save her twin and possibly the world if she can’t remember both are in peril. But that’s only the beginning of her problems when the Fallen build a gateway to Hell in a magical realm that stores all knowledge. Sovvan can save her twin or she can stop the armies of Hell from coming to Shayari, but she can’t do both. And the gateway is just the beginning. The Fallen seek the Seals. If they break them, they’ll release the dark lord’s full power, and nothing can stand against him then, not even the bond between a mage and his twin. Will Sarn and his sister prevail or will darkness cover everything? Find out in Reluctant Heroes 1-10. Book excerpt: When Elbow won the Mercury Prize in 2008 for their fourth studio album - The Seldom Seen Kid - the accolade followed an organic 17 year long career marked by four classic albums and a cult following that cast them in the role of Manchester's best kept music secret. Elbow started out at a time when great songs and evocative lyrics were not generally recognised. Their music transcended genre, age and image, eventually finding its own distinctive global audience as Guy Garvey evolved into one of the most brilliant and intriguing lyricists of recent times. Reluctant Heroes charts Elbow's long journey from humble roots through modest success to international recognition. It features interviews with the band and those close to them to form the most complete band history to date.

Book excerpt: THE DUTCH CAPER First in the Cormack and Woodward series, it involves a dangerous mission into wartime Europe in order to try and find vital information about the ‘Liechtenstein' onboard radar system that Luftwaffe night fighters are using to shoot down RAF bombers in ever increasing numbers. The only way to do this is to steal a night fighter from a securely guarded Luftwaffe air base... Based on a true story. EMERALD Sequel to The Dutch Caper, where Cormack and Woodward have to fly into Berlin during the last days of the War, in order to bring out ‘Emerald', a highly placed British agent, who is being hunted, not just by the Gestapo, but by Soviet Intelligence as well. The action takes place against a background of a Berlin that is being systematically destroyed by the attacking Red Army. BERLIN ENDGAME The third book in the series, set during the Berlin Blockade of 1948. Cormack and Woodward uncover an assassination plot that, if successful, could spark armed conflict in Berlin that, almost inevitably, will lead to World War Three... Bad enough that they don't know when or where the killing is to take place, but even worse is the suspicion that their own superiors could be involved...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011, by chance I discovered the after-action reports of the 329th Infantry Regiment, my father’s World War II unit, on the Internet. An idea was born: use these to reconstruct my father’s path in Europe. I would take my three children, Richard, Mary, and Stephen, on a trip to retrace those footsteps. This book is about our travels, but it is much more. It documents the life of a man and his family, the history of a unit, and how, through research and luck, we were able piece together the story. As far as possible, I tell the tale of my father’s life with pictures and artifacts from that life. In parallel, I relate the history of the unit he joined in combat, inserting pictures where I can. In fitting all the records together with the trip itself, I discovered my father in new ways and built a memory for my children. In an appendix, I give you a guide as to how you can do this for your veterans as well.

In the city of ancient Corinth, Bellerophon grew up in the corridors of the palace, haunted by his father’s gruesome death, and distrusted and ignored by the rest of his own family. He now spends his life in the shadows of society, and that is how he prefers it. However, the Gods of Olympus have something more in mind for him. After a violent incident in the mountains, Bellerophon is banished from his home for all time. His path leads him to the court of an aged king in Tiryns where he is welcomed at first, but due to the spiteful queen, he is wrongly accused of another crime in a world that seems endlessly cruel. Dejected and uncaring of what happens to him and his hateful life, Bellerophon is sent across the sea to the court of King Iobates of Lykia. At the urging of his seer, the king welcomes Bellerophon as an honoured guest in his home, until he discovers the reason for his arrival. Seeking a way to be rid of Bellerophon, without violating the sacred laws of Zeus, King Iobates commands that he complete three impossible tasks to prove his innocence or bring about his death. With the world set against him, Bellerophon welcomes his imminent end. That is, until he meets the king’s daughter, Philonoe, the only person who has ever believed in him, and whose father has kept a dark secret from for many years. With the Gods and Lykia’s princess on his side, can Bellerophon prove his innocence and help save Lykia and its people? Will he finally accept the fate that the Gods have pressed upon him? Or will he succumb to the despair and hopelessness that have dogged him all of his life? Only by facing his deepest fears and a creature more terrible than any other of the Gods’ creation can Bellerophon truly succeed and become the hero he is meant to be... The Reluctant Hero is an epic retelling of the story of Bellerophon and the Chimera from Greek mythology. It is the fourth book in the Mythologia fantasy series by best-selling and award-winning author and historian, Adam Alexander Haviaras. If you enjoy books by Madeline Miller, Stephen Fry, Natalie Haynes or Jennifer Saint then you will love the Mythologia series.
