Using richly detailed transcripts from Inquisition trials, Mello e Souza reconstructs how Iberian, indigenous, and African beliefs fused to create a syncretic and magical religious culture in Brazil. Focusing on sorcery, the author argues that European traditions of witchcraft combined with practices of Indians and African slaves to form a uniquely Brazilian set of beliefs that became central to the lives of the people in the colony. Her work shows how the Inquisition reinforced the view held in Europe (particularly Portugal) that the colony was a purgatory where those who had sinned were exiled, a place where the Devil had a wide range of opportunities. Her focus on the three centuries of the colonial period, the multiple regions in Brazil, and the Indian, African, and Portuguese traditions of magic, witchcraft, and healing, make the book comprehensive in scope. Despite its importance in Brazilian society, Candomblé has received far less attention than its sister religions Vodou and Santeria. Johnson seeks to fill this void by offering a comprehensive look at the development, beliefs, and practices of Candomblé and exploring its transformation from a secret society of slaves--hidden, persecuted, and marginalized--to a public religion that is very much a part of Brazilian culture. Johnson traces this historical shift and locates the turning point in the creation of Brazilian national identity and a public sphere in the first half of the twentieth century. His major focus is on the ritual practice of secrecy in Candomblé. Like Vodou and Santeria and the African Yoruba religion from which they are descended, Candomblé features a hierarchic series of initiations, with increasing access to secret knowledge at each level. As Johnson shows, the nature and uses of secrecy evolved with the religion. First, secrecy was essential to a society that had to remain hidden from authorities. Later, when Candomblé became known and actively persecuted, its secrecy became a form of resistance as well as an exotic hidden power desired by elites. Finally, as Candomblé became a public religion and a vital part of Brazilian culture, the debate increasingly turned away from the secrets themselves and toward their possessors. It is speech about secrets, and not the content of those secrets, that is now most important in building status, legitimacy and power in Candomblé. Offering many first hand accounts of the rites and rituals of contemporary Candomblé, this book provides insight into this influential but little-studied group, while at the same time making a valuable contribution to our understanding of the relationship between religion and society.

The Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus stands as a religious behemoth in the city center of Salvador. It is a golden palace displaying its clear economic might, political power and influence over public morale, surrounded by the mushrooming impoverished hillsides of the disempowered masses. In its effort to distinguish cosmologies in a world of religious syncretism and Catholic hegemony, the Evangelical Church depends on demonizing Candomblé, an African-Diasporic religion. Candomblé has had a long history of oppression and discrimination in Brazil and early scholarship surrounding Candomblé has always linked it to represent a traditional Afro-Brazilian identity. However, Candomblé no longer represents nostalgia to the colonial past but rather an alternative modernity. This paper explores the effects of demonization of Candomblé in Salvador, Bahia Brazil by analyzing the current interactions between state/govt. agencies, the Evangelical movement, and the Candomblé community as they penetrate public morale, the booming tourist industry, and ultimately negotiate Brazil's new identity. Furthermore, as a result of this conflict, rising new alliances show that Candomblé is not a fragile religion in danger of extinction but has instead entered the playing field of global religions fighting for legitimacy, popularity and acceptance. Lastly, this research suggests that sustaining religiously fueled conflicts amongst the Afro-Brazilian community is ultimately a political tool that destabilizes progress towards a unified movement against similar structural social problems.

Book excerpt: In the last few decades scholars of the African diaspora have examined syncretic religions like Candomble' or Santeria and their relevance to cultural and social processes of identity formation, but have paid very little attention to Umbanda, a more recent Afro Brazilian variant of religious syncretism. My thesis not only makes a case for Umbanda's significance but argues that it constitutes a form of Afro Brazilian resistance. Founded at the turn of the 20th century and initially ostracized by the Brazilian elite along with other African derived practices(e.g. Candomble, Macumba, Capoeira and samba), Umbanda was declared an official religion in the 1960's and a decade later achieved status as a national symbol. The primary objective of this ethnographic work is to examine how Umbanda re- negotiates its Afro Brazilian origins and still affirms the ethnic pride of the oppressed populations of Brazil. Such negotiations occur within the theological core of Umbanda that enforces a message of equality by creating a place of transcendence where everyone is welcome both in Brazil and within the Umbanda community of Los Angeles. In particular, this thesis analyzes the origins, rituals, social impact, historical transformations, and relevance of Umbanda as a syncretic expression of Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous and European spirituality. Mainly through field work conducted in Los Angeles, I compare the contextual and ritualistic rules of the two main centers established within the Los Angeles county: The Guaracy Temple in Los Angeles, and the Portal de Aruanda temple in Torrance, California. My target community is the general population of practitioners of Umbanda in Los Angeles and my field research method consists of field notes, participant observation and, after obtaining permission from my subjects, audio recordings and transcriptions of their interviews.

The question “who are we?” has permeated the national intellectual production in various moments. Macunaima, a hero of no character created by Mario de Andrade, is born out of the need for a new definition of what the Brazilian identity meant, which was a much debated theme throughout the 1920s, when a new wave of immigration contributed to a changing state of the nation. Rumors described the superiority of foreign workers. Some historians explained that the Brazilian people had inherited the lack of interest in work from the slaves and the laziness from indigenous people. This scenario contributes to the perception that the “jeitinho” was a national characteristic. The institutionalization and perhaps the most aggressive illustration of this Brazilian value happened in the 1970s, in a TV commercial of a cigarette brand. Nationalism was thought of in different parameters than in the 1920s. There was a Brazilian pride and a megalomania created by the dictatorship. The ad shows World Cup champion Gerson striking his most famous quotation: “You like to take advantage of everything, right?” The interpretation was not pejorative at the time, but it later became a law. “For that time it was an extremely spread jargon. The commercial used an identity element that was part of the popular imagination,” asserts Maria Izilda Matos, historian and researcher of the bohemia. “The Gerson law worked as another element in the definition of national identity and the most explicit symbol of our ethics or lack of it.”
