Book excerpt: Despite detailed accounts of religious persecution faced by evangelicals behind the Iron Curtain, many narratives are incomplete, and therefore, the understanding of the extent persecution impacted the worship of believers is limited. With more Christians today being persecuted for their faith than ever before, it is important for believers in America to understand what happens in the lives of their Christian brothers and sisters when they face persecution. By comparing the religious practices of these evangelicals before, during, and after the lifting of the Iron Curtain, the differences in corporate and individual worship as a result of persecution become evident. Worship that was initially characterized by its fervor, evangelism, and outreach was restricted to the church walls. As a result, discipleship was limited, Christians became inward-focused, and there was a greater concentration on depth of personal spirituality. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, perestroika, and the end of the Cold War, there has been much more religious freedom in the countries where evangelicals were once persecuted for their faith. However, Christians in other parts of the world are still being persecuted in record numbers. By understanding how persecution changed the worship of evangelicals behind the Iron Curtain, Christians in America can know how to better assist these believers, recognize the signs of religious persecution in their own country, and be prepared in case they find themselves in similar circumstances.

Book excerpt: Through the aid of many institutions (e.g. Institutum Balticum, Radio Liberty Research, Radio Free Europe) and individuals the author has gathered a vast amount of factual information on the current state of religion in communist Eastern Europe. He has examined it warily and illustrates that the churches are not silent - the title is ironic but the faithful are all under siege, from peer pressure to outright murder, from confiscation of property to its destruction. Yet even the Soviets are beginning to discern that their faith cannot be crushed. The evidence presented is not only surprising, it is occasionally infuriating, namely the remaining silent of the World Council of Churches and his unblushing pro-Marxist supply of guerrilla factions in Africa. The author's efforts will have been worthwhile if the reader realises that freedom of religion is not guaranteed behind the Iron Curtain despite press releases to the contrary.

Book excerpt: Prison, poverty, oppression -- this is the common experience of Christians in the U.S.S.R. and other Iron Curtain countries. Though most Westerners rarely hear first-hand accounts of their suffering, these Christian brethren have great physical and spiritual needs. Here are stories from the life of John Visser, a brave and dedicated pastor from Holland who is ministering to those needs. Soviet threats, confiscations, and interrogations -- Dr. Visser has been through them all as he has taken the Word of God to the victims of communism. None of these dangers have turned him from God's call to go Behind the Iron Curtain. - Back cover.

Book excerpt: Despite widespread persecution, Orthodox churches not only survived the Cold War period but levels of religiosity in Orthodox countries remained significant. This book examines the often surprising relations between Orthodox churches and political regimes. It provides a comprehensive overview of the dynamics between Eastern Christianity and politics from the end of the Second World War to the fall of communism, covering 40 Orthodox churches including diasporic churches in Africa, Asia, America and Australia. Based on research from recently-opened archives and publications in a wide range of European languages, it analyses church-state relations on both sides of the Iron Curtain. It discusses the following key themes: the relationship between Orthodox churches and political power; religious resistance to communism; the political control of churches; religion and propaganda; monasticism and theological publications; religious diplomacy within the Orthodox commonwealth; and religious contacts between East and West.
