Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Religious Liberty in America: A History As to works cited, it is proper to specially note that the citations from Bancroft's History of the United States refer to the 28d (8 vol.) edition, Boston, 1864; also, that in the sketch of the Old World Idea, in view of its special place in this treatise, the author has felt at liberty to depend largely upon the very acute and comprehensive monograph, Church and State, by A. Innes of Edinburgh whose page is cited in every instance of direct quotation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Religious Liberty in America: Being the Great and Thursday Lectures Delivered in Boston in Nineteen Hundred and Three Two hundred and seventy-two years ago, John Cotton, minister of the First Church in Boston, with the co-operation of his ministerial associates, established what soon came to be known as the "Great and Thursday Lecture." This weekly lecture was in colonial times the chief social and religious event in Boston. In 1775 it was discontinued; but at the conclusion of the siege of Boston it was revived, and has since had a continuous existence. It has been the occasion for the discussion of public affairs as well as matters of theological interest. It is probably a unique institution in American life. With the aid of two helpful friends, the American Unitarian Association has been able to unite with the minister and Standing Committee of the First Church to carry forward on this ancient foundation a course of lectures upon Religious Liberty in America. These lectures have attracted so much public interest that they are now published by the Association for larger circulation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Liberty in the United States The cradle of religious liberty has been rocked by the worst passions of mankind. Until comparatively recent times, every sect was intol erant from conviction, and held it as a sacred duty to banish or burn the unrepentant heretics. Even heretics, when they became dominant, were not less intolerant toward their former orthodox persecutors. Do unto others as others have done unto you was the rule of persecutors. Heresy, whatever it may signify ecclesiastically, was his torically the penalty for dissent exacted by the State religion from conscientious sectaries. I never knew the time in England, said Milton, when men of truest religion were not counted sectaries.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and State in the United States: Or the American Idea of Religious Liberty and Its Practical Effects, With Official Documents American Church History has yet to be written. We are so busy making history that we have little time to study and to write history. But monographs on sectional and local topics are multiplying fast, and already present a formidable mass of material for a comprehensive view of the whole field. There is scarcely a more inviting task for a rising Ameri can historian than to exhibit from the broad platform of truth and justice, in life-like reproduction, the genesis and growth of American Christianity in its connections with the mother Christianity of Europe, its distinctive peculiarities, and its great mission for the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Religious Liberty in America: A History Though the title of this work suggests a topic having a religious aspect, yet the hook itself offers no history of the churches or of religion in America. That field is well occupied by such works as those of Baird, Dorchester, Bacon, and others, and by denominational histories. The aim of the present work is political rather than religious. It attempts a systematic narrative - so far as the author is aware, not hitherto published - of that historical development through which the civil law in America came at last, after much struggle, to the decree of entire liberty of conscience and of worship. It is thus purely historical, and confines itself rigidly to those incidents in colonial history which are closely related to this special theme. The purpose is to exhibit in proper historical sequence those influences and events which guided the American republics to their unique solution of the world-old problem of Church and State - a solution so unique, so far-reaching, and so markedly diverse from European principles as to constitute the most striking contribution of America to the science of government. With such aim and for the double purpose of correcting certain popular misconceptions and of placing plainly before the mind the complete goal of this historical progress, it has seemed desirable to define in the first chapter the elements of a pure religious liberty, as that principle has embedded itself in the American mind and law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Religious Liberty in Connecticut The following monograph is the outgrowth of three earlier and shorter essays. The first, "Church and State in Connecticut to 1818," was presented to Yale University as a doctor's thesis. The second, a briefer and more popularly written article, won the Straus prize offered in 1896 through Brown University by the Hon. Oscar S. Straus. The third, a paper containing additional matter, was so far approved by the American Historical Association as to receive honorable mention in the Justin Winsor prize competition of 1901. With such encouragement, it seemed as if the history of the development of religious liberty in Connecticut might serve a larger purpose than that of satisfying personal interest alone. In Connecticut such development was not marked, as so often elsewhere, by wild disorder, outrageous oppression, tyranny of classes, civil war, or by any great retrograde movement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Freedom and the Churches: The Contributions of American Churches In the early part of the year 1913 a liberal religious congress was held in the city of Rochester, New York, one of whose features was a series of addresses by speakers of prominence in the American religious community on the contributions of American Churches to religious and civil liberty. It has been thought that the interest and value of these papers warranted their publication. While they have been revised by their authors it is inevitable that they should in some degree retain the informality of extemporized addresses. This is, however, atoned for by the freshness, directness and vigor of these utterances, in which the eminent services of American Churches to religious and civil liberty find eloquent and convincing expression. Professor Williston Walker, D.D., has kindly contributed a chapter to this volume in which the contribution of the Congregational Churches of the United States to the cause of religious freedom is more fully exhibited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Liberty and Protection of American Citizen's Abroad: Great Public Meeting at the Tabernacle, New-York, January 26th, 1854 The time has now arrived, in the middle of this Nineteenth Century, when such stains, which have been so long lamented as discreditable to the character of those countries, should be removed. I cannot doubt that our Government will, without hesitation, give this subject the consideration which its importance demands; and that instruo tions will be transmitted to Our Representatives abroad, ' of a character that will accomplish the object our citizens have so long desired. It may not be obtained at once; but the spirit Of the age in which we live, it seems to me; must have the effect of producing changes in the civil and religious con dition of several countries in Europe, which are now suffering under a spiritual and political despotism, so that one would suppose (even in the absence of the Bible) it cannot long survive the introduction of those lower but powerful agencies of the printing press, steam' engine, and telegraph, coupled with the great and constantly augmenting intercourse of the nations of the earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popery: An Enemy to Civil and Religious Liberty; And Dangerous to Our Republic No member of the Holy Alliance Is Ignorant of the fact, that this sacred light was rekindled by gal lant and religious spirits in the United States and has thrown its radiance across the Atlantic with an intense and alarming brightness. The French. Offi cers and soldiers, who served in the war of our Revolution, learned here a lesson which could not easily be forgotten by them. They perceived the spirit that is breathed by a Protestant people; and tasted the sweets of that liberty which the gallaht citizens of the United States secured to themselves. They went home: the painful contrast, which their trodden-down Catholic country forced upon their hearts, rendered the love of American liberty doubly dear. And they hastened to reduce the lesson they had learned to some practical use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
