Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and Democracy The present world situation compels a serious reexamination of the foundations of democracy. Especially does it necessitate a consideration of educational processes and materials. In the haste to achieve efficiency may it not be that some indispensable values have been sacrificed? The words of Jesus sound again with a new emphasis: "What shall it profit a man. if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" The same applies to a nation as well as to the individual. "Has democracy failed?" men are asking to-day. Has Christianity failed? These have not failed, but, as one recent writer has said, they have been found difficult and have not yet been fairly tried. Under the conviction that a fresh study of the relation of religious education to democracy would just now be especially timely, the present writer prepared for the Commission on Christian Education of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America a Survey of Week-day Religious Instruction. In this task many valuable suggestions and criticisms were made by the members of the Commission. The writer would express his peculiar obligation to the chairman, Dean W. F. Tillett, D.D.; the secretary, the Rev. H. H. Meyer, D.D.; and to the chairman of the special subcommittee appointed for this purpose, Professor W. J. Thompson, D.D. This Survey, which appeared as a part of the Quadrennial Report of the Commission, has been carefully revised and is now contained in Part I of the present volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and American Democracy President Wilson says we must make the world safe for democracy. The safety of democracy demands intelligence and godliness. The present world war will have been waged in vain if it hands democracy over to an ignorant and godless people. A democratic people must be able to think clearly and act righteously. The world will never be safe for democracy until intelligence and godliness are the common possessions of the whole human race. Democracies must learn how to make secular and religious education efficient and universal. The first chapter in this volume outlines the great system of public schools which the state is building in order that the masses of the people may have the grade of intelligence demanded for citizenship in a democracy. It also sketches the outline of a system of schools which I believe the church must build if the intelligence of the people is to be coupled with godliness. The succeeding chapters discuss in detail the problems involved in the realization of the proposed system of church schools for the American people. The sovereign was head of the Church, and any questioning of the sovereign's acts in the matter of church government or of laws enacted in the sovereign's name in the same category could be denominated heresy or treason. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Education and the Public School: An American Problem At the meeting of the Inter-Church Conference in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November, 1905, at which twenty-nine Protestant Churches of America were represented, one of the papers treated the question of Weekday Religious Instruction. Its main proposition was favorably received, and the following resolution was adopted by the Conference: Resolved, That in the need of more systematic education in religion, we recommend for the favorable consideration of the Public School authorities of the country the proposal to allow the children to absent themselves without detriment from the public schools on Wednesday or on some other afternoon of the school week for the purpose of attending religious instruction in their own churches; and we urge upon the churches the advisability of availing themselves of the opportunity so granted to give such instruction in addition to that given on Sunday. The further consideration of the subject was referred to the Executive Committee. By direction of this Committee a report on Week-day Instruction in Religion was presented at the First Meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, held in Philadelphia in 1908. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Education of Adolescents In selecting and preparing the material for this little volume, the author has intentionally avoided the exclusively academic and scholastic point of View. The needs Of parents, teachers and other adult leaders, who are facing practical problems, have been kept in mind. Indeed, many of the paragraphs were written for the express purpose Of answering questions which had been asked by per sons who were facing perplexing situations in their own homes or schools. During the past three years, the author has delivered several short courses of lectures in con munity schools Of religious education and in sum mer schools on such subjects as: The Psychology Of Adolescent Boyhood, The Religious Nurture Of Adolescent Young People, The Psychology of Religion, and Principles and Methods Of Recrea tional Leadership. As collateral reading in these courses, one monograph Of a series Of pamphlets formerly published by the American Institute of Child Life Of Philadelphia: The Government Of Adolescent Young People, prepared by William Byron Forbush, was used. The demand for it soon exhausted the third edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A provocative reassessment of religion and culture in the early days of the American republic "The so-called Second Great Awakening was the shaping epoch of American Protestantism, and this book is the most important study of it ever published."—James Turner, Journal of Interdisciplinary History Winner of the John Hope Franklin Publication Prize, the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic book prize, and the Albert C. Outler Prize In this provocative reassessment of religion and culture in the early days of the American republic, Nathan O. Hatch argues that during this period American Christianity was democratized and common people became powerful actors on the religious scene. Hatch examines five distinct traditions or mass movements that emerged early in the nineteenth century—the Christian movement, Methodism, the Baptist movement, the black churches, and the Mormons—showing how all offered compelling visions of individual potential and collective aspiration to the unschooled and unsophisticated.

Since that time, Sheed & Ward has kept the book in print and has published several studies of John Courtney Murray's life and work. We are proud to present a new edition of this classic text, which features a comprehensive introduction by Peter Lawler that places Murray in the context of Catholic and American history and thought while revealing his relevance today. From the new Introduction by Peter Lawler: The Jesuit John Courtney Murray (1904-67) was, in his time, probably the best known and most widely respected American Catholic writer on the relationship between Catholic philosophy and theology and his country's political life. The highpoint of his influence was the publication of We Hold These Truths in the same year as an election of our country's first Catholic president. Those two events were celebrated by a Time cover story (December 12, 1960) on Murray's work and influence. The story's author, Protestant Douglas Auchincloss, reported that it was "The most relentlessly intellectual cover story I've done." His amazingly wide ranging and dense--if not altogether accurate--account of Murray's thought was crowned with a smart and pointed conclusion: "If anyone can help U.S. Catholics and their non-Catholic countrymen toward the disagreement that precedes understanding--John Courtney Murray can." . . . Murray's work, of course, is treated with great respect and has had considerable influence, but now it's time to begin to think of him as one of America's very few genuine political philosophers. His disarmingly lucid and accessible prose has caused his book to be widely cited and celebrated, but it still is not well understood. It is both praised and blamed for reconciling Catholic faith with the fundamental premises of American political life. It is praised by liberals for paving the way for Vatican II's embrace of the American idea of religious liberty, and it is

A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
