This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Hellenistic Karia by : Carbon Jan-Mathieu van Bremen Riet
Download or read book Hellenistic Karia written by Carbon Jan-Mathieu van Bremen Riet and published by Ausonius Éditions. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference on which the present volume is based took place in Oxford in the summer of 2006. It brought together linguists, archaologists, epigraphists, numismatists and historians and allowed them to exchange ideas about a period of major transition in Karian history: the fourth century and the two centuries after Alexander. This was first a period of great starapal visibility and presence, but then alsol of intense civic engagement and increased political awareness among Karian communities. The symbiotic relationship between the islands of the Dodekanese, in particular Rhodes and Kos, and the coastal regions of Karia forms another major theme. Finally, a number of papers pick up on a major recent trend in the study of Anatolian culture, namely the investigation of cross-cultural Greeak-Anatolian interactions in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages and their echoes in later periods.

Book Synopsis From Pergamon to Sperlonga by : Nancy T. de Grummond
Download or read book From Pergamon to Sperlonga written by Nancy T. de Grummond and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together the work of leading scholars on two of the most important, yet puzzling, extant ensembles of Hellenistic Age sculpture: the Great Altar at Pergamon, with its Gigantomachy and scenes from the life of Telephos, and the Cave at Sperlonga in Italy, with its epic themes connected especially with the adventures of Odysseus. From Pergamon to Sperlonga has three aims: to update the scholarship on two important monuments of ancient art and architecture; to debate questions of iconography, authorship, and date; and to broaden the scope of discussion on these monuments beyond the boundaries of studies done in the past. In addition, the volume brings forward new ideas about how these two monuments are connected and discusses possible means by which stylistic influences were transmitted between them.
Book Synopsis Rhodes in the Hellenistic Age by : Richard M. Berthold
Download or read book Rhodes in the Hellenistic Age written by Richard M. Berthold and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed political history of Rhodes from the foundation of the Rhodian republic in the fifth century B.C. to the conclusions of Rhodes' alliance with Rome in the second, a period in which Rhodes was a major Mediterranean power. Richard M. Berthold provides a complete account of Rhodian foreign affairs, exploring the principles and reasons behind Rhodes' foreign policy decisions. He traces Rhodes' history through the stormy years of the fourth century to the independence and prosperity of the third, arguing that Rhodes achieved economic and political success by pursuing a course of studied neutrality. Berthold maintains that Rhodes did not willfully abandon its neutral stance during the second century, but rather was forced by events to support Rome, a posture that ultimately led to Rhodes' loss of independence.
