Russell, after a series of adventures as an American volunteer in the Philippines, returned to enter the field of journalism. In this capacity he was working when Senator William A. Clark of Montana built his railroad connecting Salt Lake City with Los Angeles. On its completion the builder decided to dedicate his new road, by giving a free Pullman trip to all of the old pioneers who had helped to blaze the hard trail through sage and sand over which the rails had now been laid. At that time the question, what white man had first dared to take this desert trail, became a burning one. Mr. Russel], assigned the interesting work of writing up the excursion for the newspaper he represented, set out earnestly to gather from the best sources at hand this tale of the trail blazing through our Southwest. Hardly had his account come from the press before there appeared at his door an old mountaineer clad in buckskin, odorous of a thousand bonfires. This veteran of the Rockies came to make his protest; the story, be asserted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Knocking Round the Rockies: Illustrated The initial point of all expeditions, large and small, into the moun tains was, and remains, the city of Denver, the capital of Colorado, and a marvellous town. That gold existed in the Rocky Mountains has been certainly known since the earliest exploration of them; it is one of the most curious facts about the Whole matter, indeed, that the utilization of this wealth did not begin sooner. About 1803, for instance, a Kentuckian named James Pursley, while travelling with a band of Indians into the moun tains which give birth to the La Platte, Arkansaw, etc., etc. (the locality seems to have been near Mount Lincoln), found gold there, and car ried some of the virgin mineral in his Shot-pouch for months. Other wanderers reported it at various times, according to tradition, but no publicity was given to the fact, SO that the real history of the mining excitement in the lofty mid-continent ranges, and the annals of Denver, their metropolis, begin with the summer of 1858, and are associated with the name Of W. Green Russell. This gentleman was a Georgian, who had learned the delights of gold-digging where the gentle Etowah rolls enticing sands through the charming gorges of the Blue Ridge. When the gold excitement of the Pacific coast aroused the country he started Westward, taking his course up the Arkansas, passing along the eastern base of Pike's Peak, and so northward to the emigrant trail. He observed at that time what seemed to him indications of gold-gravel, but did not pause to verify it. When, therefore, a few years later, he retraced his steps, he halted long enough in Colorado to assure himself Of the richness of its bars, and then pro ceeded homeward to organize a party to return with him to this point. Two brothers, some friends, and a few Cherokee Indians joined him.* The Cherokees had previously been through here searching a promised land for their tribe, and had themselves reported gold. They concluded to remain in the Indian Territory, but left their name attached to several springs, mountains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Among the Rockies Though the Bighorn Canon is located within sixty miles of Fort Custer, in Montana, where I am writing, I can find no one who has ever been through it. Some men have been in it, but did not stay long, and only a few have traversed it for as much as twenty miles. The only man I ever met on these plains who could give a good account of the great canon. Was Lieut. George P. Belden, the celebrated trapper, guide and scout, who died some years ago. Even 'old and thoroughly travelled scouts and hunters have had to acknowledge that they knew nothing about the Bighorn Canon. Belden Often told me about it, and said he had been from its mouth to the top, and once had spent a portion of the winter beneath the friendly shelter of its mighty walls. Belden left some notes in a book giving a partial account of the sunken plain, as he called it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorado has 53 14ers, more than 600 13ers, and hundreds of other peaks that can be reached without special equipment or expertise. Numerous guides dryly catalog these trails, but Best Summit Hikes in Colorado stands out from them all. Author James Dziezynski has meticulously selected 80+ of the state's absolute best peaks in more than 50 superlative hikes, and his opinionated narrative brings each route to life. Each summit is included because of a notable feature--whether it's the site of a ghost mine or airplane wreckage, has thundering waterfalls or colorful floral meadows, is the best summit for spotting wildlife or bringing out-of-town friends, or is very accessible. Some peaks offer unique opportunities, such as a trailhead accessible only via a steam-powered railroad. Several summits are described in no other publication. Covering all Colorado's major mountain ranges, including the well-known Sangre De Cristo, Gore, Sawatch, Indian Peaks, and Maroon Bell wilderness areas to the lesser-known Grenadiers, Medicine Bow, and Outer San Juan peaks, this distinctive guide makes it easy to select exactly the right hike for the right day, the right mood, and the right companions.

Book excerpt: “Fire Season both evokes and honors the great hermit celebrants of nature, from Dillard to Kerouac to Thoreau—and I loved it.” —J.R. Moehringer, author of The Tender Bar “[Connors’s] adventures in radical solitude make for profoundly absorbing, restorative reading.” —Walter Kirn, author of Up in the Air Phillip Connors is a major new voice in American nonfiction, and his remarkable debut, Fire Season, is destined to become a modern classic. An absorbing chronicle of the days and nights of one of the last fire lookouts in the American West, Fire Season is a marvel of a book, as rugged and soulful as Matthew Crawford’s bestselling Shop Class as Soulcraft, and it immediately places Connors in the august company of Edward Abbey, Annie Dillard, Aldo Leopold, Barry Lopez, and others in the respected fraternity of hard-boiled nature writers.
