Book Synopsis Relative Visibility of Increased Legend Size Vs. Brighter Materials for Traffic Signs by : Douglas J. Mace
Download or read book Relative Visibility of Increased Legend Size Vs. Brighter Materials for Traffic Signs written by Douglas J. Mace and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Static and dynamic legibility studies were conducted to investigate the effects of level of reflectivity, letter series, stroke width, letter spacing, font, letter height, and driver age. The dynamic study also considered the effect of sign size and retroreflectivity on the level of conspicuity. As expected, driver age had the largest effect on both legibility and conspicuity. In fact, the daytime legibility for older drivers is almost as poor as night legibility. Level of retroreflectivity, letter series, and letter height all had a significant effect on legibility. Increases in letter height resulted in proportionate increases in legibility up to about 600 ft (183 m).

This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get a complete look into modern traffic engineering solutions Traffic Engineering Handbook, Seventh Edition is a newly revised text that builds upon the reputation as the go-to source of essential traffic engineering solutions that this book has maintained for the past 70 years. The updated content reflects changes in key industry standards, and shines a spotlight on the needs of all users, the design of context-sensitive roadways, and the development of more sustainable transportation solutions. Additionally, this resource features a new organizational structure that promotes a more functionally-driven, multimodal approach to planning, designing, and implementing transportation solutions. A branch of civil engineering, traffic engineering concerns the safe and efficient movement of people and goods along roadways. Traffic flow, road geometry, sidewalks, crosswalks, cycle facilities, shared lane markings, traffic signs, traffic lights, and more—all of these elements must be considered when designing public and private sector transportation solutions. Explore the fundamental concepts of traffic engineering as they relate to operation, design, and management Access updated content that reflects changes in key industry-leading resources, such as the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AASSHTO Policy on Geometric Design, Highway Safety Manual (HSM), and Americans with Disabilities Act Understand the current state of the traffic engineering field Leverage revised information that homes in on the key topics most relevant to traffic engineering in today's world, such as context-sensitive roadways and sustainable transportation solutions Traffic Engineering Handbook, Seventh Edition is an essential text for public and private sector transportation practitioners, transportation decision makers, public officials, and even upper-level undergraduate and graduate students who are studying transportation engineering.

Download or read book Highway Safety Manual written by and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2010 with total page 886 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Highway Safety Manual (HSM) is a resource that provides safety knowledge and tools in a useful form to facilitate improved decision making based on safety performance. The focus of the HSM is to provide quantitative information for decision making. The HSM assembles currently available information and methodologies on measuring, estimating and evaluating roadways in terms of crash frequency (number of crashes per year) and crash severity (level of injuries due to crashes). The HSM presents tools and methodologies for consideration of 'safety' across the range of highway activities: planning, programming, project development, construction, operations, and maintenance. The purpose of this is to convey present knowledge regarding highway safety information for use by a broad array of transportation professionals"--p. xxiii, vol. 1.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was conducted to provide results that the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) could use to help make decisions about their guide sign policies. The specific issues that were addressed include the type of font and retroreflective sheeting that should be specified on guide signs ranging from large shoulder-mounted freeway guide signs, to medium-sized guide signs such as destination and distance signs, and even including small guide signs such as county road name signs. The researchers performed a nighttime legibility study using a total of 30 subjects divided into three age groups.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A team of Kansas State University researchers was given a contract to determine the minimum luminance requirements for overhead guide signs and to determine if the illuminance from vehicle headlamps on highways was sufficient to provide drivers with this required minimum luminance. This report covers a literature review to determine the minimum luminance value needed, an overview of the equipment developed for field studies of vehicle headlamp illuminance, results of a small laboratory study to determine minimum luminance of highway guide signs, and the results of field studies to determine illuminance values from a sample of the fleet of vehicles on highways, and the results of a study of illuminance values obtained from the headlamps of 50 known vehicles of varying ages and types.
