Book excerpt: According to recent national and state level assessments, only about one-third of Michigan students are proficient in secondary math. Previous studies have been inconsistent in demonstrating the impact of an interim assessment process on student achievement, especially with high school mathematics. Moreover, previous studies were not found to utilize Hierarchical Linear Models (HLM) to test such a relationship, especially a three level HLM that links secondary students to a primary math teacher. Therefore, the purpose of my study was to ascertain the extent to which math teachers utilized an interim instructional assessment (IIA) process within middle and high schools, and how such utilization levels connected to student achievement. Another purpose was to ascertain the role that the intensity of teacher training had on the levels of utilization within these schools. This quantitative study focuses on how the levels of implementation of the IIA process relate both to levels of teacher training and math achievement of secondary students. The sample included 13,494 students nested within 165 teachers and 35 middle or high schools. The first two research questions examine the variation of the data and the relationship between levels of teacher training and seven research-based components of the IIA process. The final research question examines the relationship between seven components of the IIA process and the student achievement in secondary math. The data analysis reveals differences at the teacher level across the region regarding their utilization of the IIA Process, as well as differences among the student-level math achievement data provided by the state. Such differences were found to have a positive relationship (0.25*) between regional training and higher, self-reported practices of utilizing interim assessments in the classroom. The analysis also shows a positive relationship (0.11**) between growth in student achievement on the state assessment and interim assessment utilization such that a teacher with a lower IIA Process score of 2.8 would expect the students to have an average z-score of 0.09 on the state math test. Whereas a similar teacher with a higher IIA Process score of 5.4 would expect the students to have an average z-score of 0.37 on the state math test. Likely the greatest implication to educational leaders is the impact teachers have on student learning even when controlling for at-risk factors such as poverty. This is evident in the positive relationship between the growth in student math achievement and some of the individual components, in particular, those related to professional learning communities (assessment design, data analysis, supportive structures and relationships) and those related to high impact instruction (student discourse and distributed practice). Educational leaders would want to assess how their school utilizes interim instructional assessments that follow the scope and sequence of instruction and the structures in place to allow for data analysis within a collaborative environment. In other words, those who collaborate around assessment results seem to have a greater impact on student learning. In addition to teachers talking with each other, this research supports the notion that students learn better when talking with each other as well.

Book excerpt: Many people have touted education as a great equalizer because it provides students with the skills and opportunity to succeed in life based on their own merit. While this attitude has helped increase access to education around the world, the quality of that education varies. Globally, education has multiple challenges. On the micro level, educational quality remains inconsistent, and on the macro level, increasing economic inequality has potential to deleteriously affect education. This study analyzes the relationships between micro level education phenomena and these macro level economic forces to determine how economic inequality relates to education quality. This study engages the infamous educational "black box" in three different areas that capture, in aggregate, a meaningful portion of the classroom experience: opportunity to learn (OTL), teacher preparation, and student achievement. The analysis situates educational quality in the context of country-level economics by comparing students across three types of economic disparities: inequality between countries, inequality within countries, and inequality in the socio-economic status (SES) of students. Between-country inequality consists of differences in overall country income while within-country inequality concerns the distribution of income. Between-student inequality gauges the relative SES of families and their ability to provide resources conducive to education. The main hypothesis is that high SES students in more-unequal countries have relatively more access to educational resources, leading to relatively better teachers, relatively more OTL, and higher math scores. The converse would hold true for low SES students. Findings from international comparisons using the international assessments in 2003 (PISA and TIMSS) show that income inequality adversely relates to educational factors for students in all SES groups. Both high and low SES students in more-unequal countries have lower achievement scores, less prepared teachers, and less OTL. More detailed analysis at the country level does not identify any "silver bullets" for low or high income inequality countries, but does show that OTL has a greater relationship to achievement for higher SES students, while environmental factors such as community size matter for low SES students. Theses findings imply that high SES students have the foundation to take better advantage of their educational settings while low SES students must first manage their social and economic environments.

Following an executive summary, this report contains: (1) an introduction including information on the background and purpose of the study, a description of data sources and variables used in the analyses, and an outline of the methodological approach utilized; (2) a summary of the effects of school characteristics on mathematics achievement for each of the three grades with respect to the within-school model and the five between-school models; (3) a summary of the effects of school characteristics on science achievement for each of the three grades with respect to the within-school model and the five between-school models, enlarged with a comparison of mathematics and science results; (4) an extensive discussion of the findings in relation to methodological goals, grade level differences, school size, disassociation of socio-economic influences from race-ethnicity, tracking, gender differences, and teacher characteristics; and (5) appendices that include technical notes for the variables and the HLM methodology, descriptive statistics for selected characteristics, and supporting tables for the HLM results. In general, the school characteristics examined in the analyses provided better explanations for average achievement between schools than they did for the effects of gender, race-ethnicity, and socioeconomic status on achievement. Book excerpt: A robust body of research has identified associations between positive teacher-child relationships--characterized by high levels of closeness and low levels of conflict--and children's academic achievement in elementary school (e.g. Roorda, 2012). Additional studies find that high-quality teacher-child relationships may promote academic resilience among lower-income, racial/ethnic minority children at-risk for poor achievement (Crosnoe et al., 2010; Murray & Zvoch, 2011). This work suggests that interventions designed to boost academic achievement in lower-income urban schools should consider targeting teacher-child relationship quality. Research, however, has yet to use multi-level models to infer causal impacts of high-quality teacher-child relationships on academic achievement within this high-risk population of students and schools. The current study uses a multi-level propensity score matching approach to estimate causal effects of a high-quality teacher-child relationship in kindergarten on student math and reading achievement at the transition to first grade. In this study, the researchers compare effects from these models to multi-level regressions, and conduct sensitivity analyses of continuous effects using generalized propensity score matching procedures. The results revealed sizeable, positive impacts of high-quality teacher-child relationships in kindergarten on a standardized measure of math achievement in first grade for a low-income, racial/ethnic minority population of students attending urban schools. However, no effects of high-quality teacher-child relations were detected for reading outcomes in first grade. Two tables are appended.

It is apparent in the performance of the pupils in School A, Schools Division of Cebu City with the results in their Periodical Examinations. The Mean Percentage Score (MPS) in athematics did not meet the standard passing rate of the Department of Education which is 75%, that is according to DECS Order No. 46, s.1983. Performance of the learners has persistently been poor. The repeated result made the teachers and administrator dissatisfied. Therefore, it is a great challenge for the teachers handling Mathematics to have a couple of solutions in solving these problems inside the classroom. This condition has encouraged the researcher to investigate the factors that contribute to the poor performance of the Grade six learners in School A.
