Book excerpt: Despite an increase in the accessibility to higher education by non-traditional populations, there remain a significant number of students that come from families where they are the first to attend and hopefully graduate from college. In addition to the challenges faced by first time college students, first-generation college students (FGS) are faced with their own unique and complex issues. Notably, the relationship between self-perception of academic abilities and academic performance can have an impact on the retention and persistence of this student population. The author frames the issues faced by FGS and deconstruct the role of self-perception, self-esteem and self-efficacy in academic achievement amongst the target population ultimately intended to lead to successful postsecondary outcomes. Seven categories emerged from data content analysis of the data: (a) being an African American male, (b) being a Man of Morehouse, (c) being a FGS, (d) community support, (e) peer support, (f) institutional support and (g) motivation. Based on findings, a student centric success model was designed to support the academic success of the target population.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistence to graduation for adult undergraduate students has been challenging for decades. Many adult learners enroll into the university with numerous sociodemographic characteristics that can hinder their success. Adult students must manage multiple roles and balance their personal, professional and student roles in order to succeed. Twenty-eight percent of first year undergraduate students will not return to college in their second year (American College Testing, 2012). The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between self-efficacy, academic success and persistence for undergraduate students through the lens of Donaldson & Graham's (1999) model of college outcomes for adult learners. The sample for this study represented 310 undergraduate students from two large urban public universities in the United States. This study measured the students' level of self-efficacy and academic persistence in college. The following surveys were employed for this study: the New General Self-Efficacy Scale (Chen, Gully and Eden, 2001) and the Social Integration and Persistence Scale (Pascarella & Terenzini, 1980). Because this survey is nearly 40-years old, the researcher employed an exploratory factor analysis on the data which now suggest that there are six factors that measure academic persistence for adult learners in urban universities. These six factors include: (1) intellectual development, (2) peer group interaction, (3) non-classroom faculty interaction, (4) negative faculty interaction, (5) academic aspirations, and (6) university interconnectedness. This study suggests a significant positive correlation between five of the six factors, with exception to the factor: interconnectedness to the university. The findings suggest that there is a significant correlation between self-efficacy and undergraduate credit hours earned, but no significant correlation between self-efficacy and cumulative grade point average. The findings suggest that there is a positive correlation for student persistence factors: intellectual development and student academic aspirations and between the credit hours earned. There is a significant positive correlation for student persistence factors: intellectual development, student academic aspirations, and university interconnectedness and between the GPA. The findings suggest a negative correlation exists between the students' persistence factor: negative faculty interactions and GPA. This study found a significant influence between numerous student sociodemographic characteristics and factors measuring student persistence.

This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the nature of the self and how the various self-perception constructs - self-esteem, self-concept, and self-efficacy - contribute to academic functioning. The research was undertaken in three stages. The first was designed to examine how the self is represented. Bandura's Multidimensional Scales of Perceived Self-Efficacy (1990) and Barter's Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (1988) were utilised to examine the extent to which self-efficacy and competency-related elements of the self-concept are independent constructs. Factor analysis of data provided by secondary school students revealed that when measured using domain-specific measures such as these, self-efficacy and competency self-concept do not represent totally separate, distinct aspects of the self. The second stage was designed to examine how representations of the self relate to academic performance, intrinsic motivation, and occupational and educational aspirations. Taking account of past academic performance and other factors that might impact on the self-perception-academic outcome relationship, self-efficacy was shown to be a better predictor of these outcomes than either of the other two self constructs. Self-esteem was the least predictive. These findings suggest that self-efficacy and self-concept, but not self- esteem, are important for the development of academic functioning. The third stage of this research was designed to examine whether interventions can have a positive effect on how the self is represented, and if so, whether this also impacts on academic functioning. This thesis used a widely-used and Government-supported intervention programme to explore this issue in a real-world context. There were positive effects on some aspects of self-concept but not on any other variables. These effects were not associated with any changes in the academic outcomes. The, reasons why this intervention did not have a wider impact are explored, and the practical and theoretical implications of the findings are discussed. This research provides a clearer understanding about where educators and education policy-makers should focus their efforts if the aim is to enhance self-related perceptions in school.

Book excerpt: Previous research has shown relationships between ethnic identity and other aspects of the self-concept such as efficacy and self-esteem, particularly among minority groups. This study examined the relationships between ethnic identity, collective self-esteem and academic self-efficacy. These relationships were examined among an overall sample of 144 respondents, and among two distinct samples consisting of Black and White respondents, respectively. Results showed positive correlations between ethnic identity and academic self-efficacy, collective self-esteem and academic self-efficacy, and between ethnic identity and collective self-esteem for the overall sample. Similar results were found for the sample consisting of Black respondents only. For the White sample, a positive correlation was found between collective self-esteem and ethnic identity only. The study further examined the relationships between academic self-efficacy and the ethnic identity and collective self-esteem subscales. For the overall sample, positive correlations were found between academic self-efficacy and the ethnic identity search and commitment subscales. Correlations for this sample were also found between academic self-efficacy and the membership self-esteem and private collective self-esteem subscales. For the Black sample, correlations were found between academic self-efficacy and the ethnic identity search and commitment subscales. Furthermore, there were correlations between academic self-efficacy and the membership self-esteem subscale, as well as the private collective self-esteem subscale for Black respondents. For the White sample, no relationships were found between academic self-efficacy and any of the collective self-esteem and ethnic identity subscales. Furthermore, limitations of the current study were identified and, subsequently, recommendations for future research were made. It was recommended that future research include other aspects of the self-concept such as personal self-esteem and actual academic achievement, so as to determine the relationships between these and the variables examined in the current study.

Book excerpt: The present work aims to highlight the important role of psychological variables like self-esteem, self-efficacy, and achievement motivation for college success. Researchers have found that there exists a strong positive correlation between students’ self-esteem and their self-efficacy. It means the students who have higher self-esteem, also feel confident about their abilities. All those students who regard themselves to be worthy, also are very confident about themselves in particular tasks. As far as achievement motivation is concerned, researches show that there is a weak, yet positive correlation between self-esteem and achievement motivation, and a positive relation between self-efficacy and achievement motivation. Moreover, it has also been observed that all those students who have high self-efficacy, also had high achievement motivation.
