Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION The first chapter is presented in seven sections, each highlighting key aspects pertaining to academic performance and self-perceptions of academically average performing students. Section I: presents the background of the study and introduces the topic along with relevant related aspects Section II: discusses Academic Performance and Self-Perception among students and the relationship between these two facets of students' academic life Section III: presents the reciprocal relationship between Academic Self-Concept and Academic Achievement among students Section IV: deals with self-perceptions of personal agency such as Self-Efficacy and SelfRegulation and its influence on students' Academic Performance Section V: presents the self-regulation strategies used in this study such as Goal Setting, Mindfulness Practice and Cognitive Instructional Strategy using Graphic Organizers Section VI: outlines the theoretical backdrop of learning processes and academic achievement Section VII: outlines the conceptual frame work and the need for the present study highlighting the key objectives. Section I: Background of the study The Indian school education system in the last few decades has gone on to make their mark in diverse fields of national and international life. There are diverse aspects of our educational system, particularly the school system that are lacking to make a significant impact. It is characterized by inflexibility where learning is unconnected with the students' 2 life and this in turn has led to the neglect of students' present abilities and increase in their difficulties (NCERT, 2006). The National focus Group of the NCERT (2006) further points out that the Indian School Education System is a monolithic system that has resulted in a set of practices for the development of curriculum, syllabus and textbooks rather focused on the requirements of the examination system than the child's learning requirement, aims of education and the socioeconomic and cultural contexts of learners. It further highlights the fact that educational practices in school are a dull routine, characterized by bored teachers and students, and a rote system of learning. Performance in academics requires all aspects of the students' wellbeing such as psychological behavioral, emotional, physical and social. Students who are physically and psychologically stable and strong tend to perform better when compared to those who are not. In other words, those who are experiencing psychological problems face difficulties in their academic performance. Hence, psychological stability turns out to be an important predictor of high academic achievement. Understanding aspects of the self, particularly of students who are low achievers is critical, due to the large number of children who are left behind and the social ramifications that result from poor education. In a country like India, with a population over a billion, the demand the school going population places on the limited resources, government policies and the type of delivery all gain special significance when the students' academic life and career is taken into consideration. With a huge demand of good quality education and delivery that the school going population places on the government and private players, it is quite possible that students, who fail, fall back. It is all the more so, if students have difficulties in learning. It is therefore imperative and of critical importance to have a clear understanding of the barriers that impact students' education so that successful school based interventions can be,

Book excerpt: Abstract: Research shows a connection between students' self-perceptions and academic performance in school. This study determined if there is a relationship between students' ratings on the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, 2nd Edition and their grade point average (GPA), period absences, and performance on California Standardized Tests (CST) in English and math. Data were also analyzed according to gender, ethnicity, and special education placement. Participants included 51 students with mild disabilities at a Southern California high school. Results indicated a positive correlation between GPA and Behavioral Adjustment domain scores. A negative correlation was found between CST math scores and both Total scores and Happiness and Satisfaction scores. CST English scores were negatively correlated with Popularity scores. No differences were found based on gender, ethnicity, or placement; however, scores on the Intellectual and School Status domain were significantly lower than scores on all other domains. Implications for practice and policy are discussed.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores the nature of the self and how the various self-perception constructs - self-esteem, self-concept, and self-efficacy - contribute to academic functioning. The research was undertaken in three stages. The first was designed to examine how the self is represented. Bandura's Multidimensional Scales of Perceived Self-Efficacy (1990) and Barter's Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents (1988) were utilised to examine the extent to which self-efficacy and competency-related elements of the self-concept are independent constructs. Factor analysis of data provided by secondary school students revealed that when measured using domain-specific measures such as these, self-efficacy and competency self-concept do not represent totally separate, distinct aspects of the self. The second stage was designed to examine how representations of the self relate to academic performance, intrinsic motivation, and occupational and educational aspirations. Taking account of past academic performance and other factors that might impact on the self-perception-academic outcome relationship, self-efficacy was shown to be a better predictor of these outcomes than either of the other two self constructs. Self-esteem was the least predictive. These findings suggest that self-efficacy and self-concept, but not self- esteem, are important for the development of academic functioning. The third stage of this research was designed to examine whether interventions can have a positive effect on how the self is represented, and if so, whether this also impacts on academic functioning. This thesis used a widely-used and Government-supported intervention programme to explore this issue in a real-world context. There were positive effects on some aspects of self-concept but not on any other variables. These effects were not associated with any changes in the academic outcomes. The, reasons why this intervention did not have a wider impact are explored, and the practical and theoretical implications of the findings are discussed. This research provides a clearer understanding about where educators and education policy-makers should focus their efforts if the aim is to enhance self-related perceptions in school.

Book excerpt: Academic self-concept has been extensively studied in terms of its relationship with academic achievement. The existing research has portrayed three theoretical models for this relationship: Self-Enhancement Model, Skill Development Model, and Reciprocal Model. The majority of results have provided support for a Reciprocal Model. So far, little research has been done in this area for students with learning disabilities (LD). Previous research has suggested that students without and with LD demonstrate differing developmental patterns in academic self-concept and math achievement. This study thus examined the relationship between academic self-concept and math achievement among students without and with LD. Further, the relationship between academic self-concept and math achievement may differ based on the types of math achievement measures used. Thus, this study also examined the relationship between academic self-concept and math achievement using two types of math achievement measures: high-stakes (math Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test [MFCAT]) and low-takes (Woodcock-Johnson III Broad Math Test [WBMT]) standardized tests. This study used data from an existing federally-funded seven-year longitudinal study database (2001--2008, Principal Investigator: Marjorie Montague), which included 165 students without LD and 30 students with LD. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationship between academic self-concept and two measures of math achievement from Grades 8 to 10 at different time points in early and late adolescence. The findings of this study found that WBMT scores in Grade 8 significantly predicted academic self-concept in Grade 10 in both students without and with LD. However, when using the MFCAT measure, MFCAT scores in Grade 8 predicted academic self-concept in Grade 10 only in students without LD but not students with LD. Recommendations for practice and future research are provided.
