Book excerpt: Historically, the study of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting has largely been within the context of Western economies. However, in the wake of highly publicized incidents such as Bhopal and the struggle of the Ogoni people in Nigeria, many large corporations now claim to be taking steps to improve their environmental and social performance within developing countries. Using the lens of stakeholder theory, this book examines whether the current practice of CSR reporting in developing countries is motivated by a desire to discharge accountability to all relevant stakeholders or whether it is being driven by the imperative of advancing corporate economic interests. While concepts like CSR reporting have become more fashionable, they vary widely in different national contexts; this book therefore clarifies the types and roles of CSR reporting and the underlying corporate motivations. The author considers the current CSR reporting practices in a number of developing countries, with particular attention given to illuminating a case study of Bangladesh.

Book excerpt: This research aims to test empirically the relationship between the Financial Performances (Profitability) and the level of Corporate Governance Disclosure (CGD) by the listed non-financial companies in Bangladesh. Data are taken from annual reports of the listed companies in the 2007. This paper is based on a sample of 94 listed companies and Used OLS as a method of estimation. The extent of corporate governance disclosure level is measured using 40 items of information and financial performance (profitability) is measured by return on assets (ROA). Using an unweighted approach for measuring corporate governance disclosure, this approach is most appropriate when no importance is given to any specific user-groups. After establishing the disclosure index, a scoring sheet was developed to assess the extent of corporate governance disclosures. The result shows that the Financial Performances (Profitability) and Board Audit Committee are positively correlated with the level of Corporate Governance Disclosure (CGD). Percentage of Equity Owned by the Insiders is negatively associated with the Corporate Governance Disclosure. The study provides empirical evidence to policy makers and regulators in South Asia.

Book excerpt: Purpose- This study analyzes the connection between the sustainability performance and financial performance of Bangladeshi banks to ascertain whether the implementation of sustainability regulations has an impact on financial performance. Furthermore, if an impact is found, whether it increases or decreases the financial performance of these banks. Design/Methodology/Approach- This study evaluates financial and sustainability related performance indicators taken from published Central Bank reports as well as from respective banks' published annual reports and websites. The indicators have been analyzed using several statistical methods, such as Linear Regression, Panel Regression, and Granger causality tests. Practical Implications- Porter and Linde (1995) claimed that improving a firm's environmental performance can lead to better financial performance, without an increase to cost. By following this approach, Bangladeshi banks can make more profit on the one hand and save the environment on the other by investing more in green products and projects. Social Implications- Bangladeshi banks will be able to influence and motivate businesses to become greener, which will reflect on society and on the total economy. As a result, the country will be able to lower the pollution rate and better handle other natural calamities that hinder the everyday life of the people and of society overall. Research Limitations- Since this is a new concept for Bangladesh, with regulations having been introduced only six years ago, the field is currently going through the early development phase. Hence, very little research has been done on this topic. Moreover, the data related to green performance indicators are not consistent throughout the years of implementation due to limited reporting, which limits the set of available data on hand. More data is needed to analyze the long-term effects of the regulations. Originality/Value- To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first study that explores the sustainability performance of Bangladeshi banks, including their product and services. Furthermore, the study adds to the knowledge regarding the impact of financial sector regulations and policies on the environmental and financial performance of banks. Keywords: Banks; Bangladesh; credit risk; green banking; Environmental & Social Risk Management (ESRM); corporate sustainability; guidelines. Paper Type- Research paper.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of the present research is to empirically scrutinize the relationship between corporate governance (CG) characteristics and environmental reporting (ER) (a component of corporate social responsibility) of firms in Pakistan, through the lens of stakeholder and agency theory. The annual reports of 50 non-financial companies listed on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) for the years 2014,Äì2015 are content analyzed to compute the companies,Äô environmental reporting practices. A multifactor model comprising of six elements of CG, i.e. board size, board independence, CEO duality, audit committee independence, proportion of female directors on board and institutional investors is used to assess the impact of CG elements on companies,Äô environmental reporting initiatives. The results revealed that larger board size, higher proportion of independent non-executive directors on the board, partition of the dual role of chairman and CEO and institutional ownership is associated with greater environmental reporting. The results are valuable to both academics and policy makers in Pakistan.

This report makes essential reading for company management, investors and other stakeholders. It demonstrates the quantitative links between environmental and financial performance for the UK’s best and worst environmental performers across a range of business sectors. It shows that there is no financial penalty for being environmentally proactive, and confirms US findings that good environmental performance improves a company’s financial performance.

Book excerpt: In the light of global warming and environmental concerns across the globe, environmental accounting and reporting has now become an emerging reality and necessity of the corporate world. Considering the same, the present paper is based on an exploratory study carried out to have an understanding of the nature and extent of environmental reporting practices followed by the market leaders (MLs). An attempt has been made to analyse the annual reports of the selected companies in order to examine their environmental disclosure practices with reference to the type of the disclosure, section where such disclosure is made and the extent of mandatory and voluntary disclosures made. An index of environmental disclosure, listing 23 items of information, was constructed after surveying the literature to find out the nature of disclosure practices in these companies. This index was further sub-divided into three groups to find out the thrust of environmental disclosures by the sample companies. It was found that majority of the MLs reported the mandatory environmental information in the 'Director's Report', whereas the voluntary information was disclosed either in the 'Highlights' or in the 'Dedicated Section' of the annual report, followed by the 'Management Discussion Analysis' and the 'Corporate Governance Report' sections. A growing trend of reporting environmental information voluntarily was observed. Almost all the MLs have had environmental management systems in place by 2013. All except one ML prepared the business responsibility report, as mandated by the Securities Exchange Board of India. Further, neither the firm nor the governance characteristics had any significant impact on the environmental performance of the MLs. Hence, it was concluded that steps taken by the MLs towards environmental conservation was independent of board independence, size, leverage or profitability and that MLs were committed to the cause of environmental sustainability.

In order to accomplish sustainable profitable business, companies around the world are highly emphasizing on Corporate Social Performance (CSP). Bangladeshi banking and financial sectors are no exception to this trend. Researchers around the world have reported a positive, negative, mixed and neutral impact of CSP on stock return. On this background, this study examines the impact of CSP on stock return in the financial sector of Bangladesh.Data sample covers 30 banks and 23 financial institutions listed in Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). CSR reports, websites, regulatory notifications, newspaper articles of 2013 were used for the measurement of CSP and for stock return and other control variables, data of 2014 were used. Logistic Regression was applied to identify the relationships between the variables. The results of the study indicate that, CSP has a positive significant relationship with stock return. Also a positive relation between bank size and higher CSP was revealed. It was evident that investors are sensitive to the corporate social responsibility and firm's positive engagement with the social responsibility does increase the value of stock. Findings of the study are expected to improve the investment climate by encouraging the investors to make their investment decisions based on long-term sustainability. The current study has several policy implications. Based on the findings of the study policy-makers should undertake policy measures to encourage firms to enhance their socially responsible activities. Regulatory bodies such as Bangladesh Bank, Bangladesh Securities Exchange Commission, and Insurance Development & Regulatory Authority Bangladesh (IDRAB) might consider making corporate social and environmental disclosure mandatory to make information easily accessible to the investors. By considering the constraints of considering only bank and financial institutions in this study, a more comprehensive study by covering various industries, having cross-dimensional analysis, is suggested for further studies.
