Book excerpt: The Armed Forces Qualification Test, the screening test used by all the services, must provide both a measure of general military trainability and measures of specific aptitudes. Following the research design for previous forms, experimental test items in four content areas developed by the separate services were administered to 3000 Armed Forces personnel for item analysis and item selection. Final forms were then administered to standarization samples representative of the mobilization population as a basis for conversion of test scores to percentile norms. AFQT 7 and 8 correlated substantially with preceding operational forms (r = .89 - 90) and are satisfactory alternate forms for screening. Correlation of AFQT 7-8 with years of formal education (r = .53) was slightly less than for the previous forms. Because of the high degree of equivalence of the two forms (r = .94) established in samples totaling 600 cases, a single conversion table was established for AFQT 7 and 8. Based on experimentation, instructions for administering AFQT 7 and 8 have been made shorter and simpler than for previous forms, with no loss in test effectiveness. (Author).

Book excerpt: This paper briefly describes the results of a large Air Force experiment conducted during 1972-1973. This experiment analyzed the test performance of airmen after they had completed an initial term of service. Because the airmen were originally tested with the old Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) and secondly with the new ASVAB, we have a unique opportunity to compare these two tests. In these results I find little evidence of bias in the ASVAB. In addition, these results strongly suggest that the AFQT scores received by recruits at enlistment are poor indicators of their later abilities to perform their military tasks. These results do not necessarily conflict with the statements of Pirie. The current difficulties have been attributed to the ASVAB as implemented in 1976, i.e., versions 5, 6, and 7. The results presented here undoubtedly relate to an earlier version of the ASVAB.

Book excerpt: With the implementation of the all volunteer force concept, the Air Force must insure that the objectively measurable range of ability in its manpower pool is being utilized. This is especially true for minority groups who have been categorized and channeled into military career areas based upon their performance on two selection tests: the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) and the Airman Qualifying Examination (AQE). To investigate the relationship of the AFQT and AQE to the general mental ability of different racial groups of airmen, a sample of 100 black and 100 white Air Force basic trainees was administered an established test of general mental ability, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The verbal, performance, and full scale IQ scores of the white and black airmen were compared to their AFQT scores and their four AQE aptitude indexes. Significant differences between black and white airmen were found on the AFQT, the four AQE aptitude indexes, and the three WAIS IQs. Regression analyses demonstrated most differences to be interaction effects between race and Air Force test scores. Implications for further research into Air Force airmen selection tests were discussed.

For more than 60 years, it has relied on the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) as one measure of those qualifications. A variety of concerns have been raised about whether the AFOQT is biased, too expensive, or even valid for predicting officer success. The authors conducted a literature search to answer these concerns. They conclude that the AFOQT is a good selection test that predicts important Air Force outcomes and is not biased against minorities or women. The Air Force would not benefit by replacing the AFOQT with the SAT primarily because it would still have to administer subtests that measure specific aptitudes and knowledge needed for predicting pilot and combat systems officer success. However, other valid selection tools, such as personality tests, could be used to complement the AFOQT.
