Leur mode d’action sur le désir sexuel est cependant mal connu. En pratique clinique, les femmes rapportent fréquemment une baisse du désir sexuel sous COC. Objectif: Explorer les perceptions des femmes ayant ressenti une modification de leur désir sexuel sous COC. Méthode: Etude qualitative par entretiens semi-dirigés enregistrés auprès de 13 patientes consultant dans le service d’orthogénie du CHRU de Tours, et ayant ressenti une modification de leur désir sexuel entre une période sous CCC et une période sous contraception non hormonale. Analyse thématique du contenu et construction d’un modèle. Résultats: Le choix d’une contraception s’appuyait sur de multiples facteurs. Chaque définition du désir sexuel était différente. Ses principaux déterminants étaient organiques, psychologiques et cycliques. Les effets indésirables ressentis sous CCC influençaient de nombreux déterminants du désir sexuel. L’évaluation du désir sexuel sous CCC retrouvait des résultats contradictoires selon les participantes et variables dans le temps. Ces modifications du désir sexuel retentissaient sur leur couple et leur qualité de vie. Conclusion : Les modifications du désir sexuel sous CCC semblent liées à des facteurs psychologiques, organiques et hormonaux, plus ou moins fortement influencés par la pilule. Le sens de cette modification, son intensité, et son évolution sont propres à chaque femme et ne peuvent être determinés à l’avance. Il revient donc aux prescripteurs d’être à l’écoute de leurs patientes à ce sujet.

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the intersections of masculinity, old age and sexuality from the perspectives of old men themselves, how they understand and experience sex and sexuality in later life. The study uses qualitative in-depth interviews and body diaries, an exploratory method that asked men write about their bodies in everyday life. Twenty-two men, born between 1922 and 1942, participated in the study. The aim of the thesis is two-fold: firstly, to study sexual subjectivities of old men, how old men articulate and make meaning around sexuality in later life. Secondly, the study aims to explore theoretically what a male body may become in relation to ageing; in what ways the ageing male body could be a site for rethinking masculinity and the male body. This aim was inspired by feminist theories in dialogue with the deleuzian concept becoming. Similarly to gender, age is understood to take shape and become intelligible in social and cultural contexts. Furthermore, the thesis stresses the significance of the specificities of the ageing body to the shaping of masculinity, sexuality and subjectivity. The body is therefore discussed as an “open materiality”, beyond the binaries of culture and nature/materiality. This thesis discusses the concepts intimacy and touch as central to how old men’s sexual subjectivities take shape, allowing for alternative conceptualisations of sexuality beyond erection and intercourse. Intimacy and touch are understood and discussed in several different ways. By orienting themselves to touch and intimacy the old men emerged as more mature, unselfish and with more serene sexual desires. This also involved them distancing themselves from the younger man/other men, whom they perceived as more selfish, inconsiderate and with stronger sexual desires. Intimacy and touch could in this respect be understood as resources for shaping desirable heterosexual masculinity. An orientation to intimacy and touch enabled old men to appear as neither asexual nor as “dirty” old men. But the study also suggests that a turn to intimacy and touch may open up possibilities for rethinking and reconfiguring sexuality, masculinity and the male body. The ageing body then need not be understood as an obstacle but as an enabling site that provides opportunities for intimacy and touch. Moreover, the thesis presents affirmative old age as an alternative conceptualisation of old age, beyond both the discourses of successful ageing and the discourses of old age as negativity and decline. As a theory of difference and bodily specificity, affirmative old age may be of interest for further feminist theorising.

Nelly Oudshoorn explains why it is that, although the technical feasibility of male contraceptives was demonstrated as early as the 1970s, there is, to date, no male pill. Ever since the idea of hormonal contraceptives for men was introduced, scientists, feminists, journalists, and pharmaceutical entrepreneurs have questioned whether men and women would accept a new male contraceptive if one were available. Providing a richly detailed examination of the cultural, scientific, and policy work around the male pill from the 1960s through the 1990s, Oudshoorn advances work at the intersection of gender studies and the sociology of technology. Oudshoorn emphasizes that the introduction of contraceptives for men depends to a great extent on changing ideas about reproductive responsibility. Initial interest in the male pill, she shows, came from outside the scientific community: from the governments of China and India, which were interested in population control, and from Western feminists, who wanted the responsibilities and health risks associated with contraception shared more equally between the sexes. She documents how in the 1970s, the World Health Organization took the lead in investigating male contraceptives by coordinating an unprecedented, worldwide research network. She chronicles how the search for a male pill required significant reorganization of drug-testing standards and protocols and of the family-planning infrastructure—including founding special clinics for men, creating separate spaces for men within existing clinics, enrolling new professionals, and defining new categories of patients.
