Book excerpt: Selection of a technique for rehabilitation of asphalt pavement rutting is dependent on the geometrical extent of damage, and whether it is limited to the asphalt bound layers or reaching the subgrade. Overlays are not suitable when the distress is limited to the truck lane of multi-lane divided roadways. Rut-fillers are also not suitable when rutting is associated with heaves causing changes in the original profile of the pavement cross section . Milling of the damaged surface becomes a necessary part of the rehabilitation process for those above circumstances . The thickness of milled layer has to be rationally designed . The milled layer has to be replaced by arecycled or new rut resistant layer . This paper presents a study in which the main objective was to determine the thickness of milled layer that has to be replaced for the rehabilitation of pavement rutting . The procedure presented is applicable only for rutting limited within asphalt concrete layers. Full depth full width saw cut trenches together with full depth full width continuous cores were taken from the truck lane of ten rutted pavement sections . Profiles of asphalt concrete layers were used to determine the vertical extent of damage. In addition, the mean and standard deviation of rut depth and rut width along those ten pavement sections, were computed. A straight edge was used to measure the rut depth and the rut width (crest to crest distance). Simple relationships were developed relating the vertical extent of damage (thickness of milled layer) to the amount of rut depth and rut width It was concluded that the thickness of the milled layer that has to be replaced for the rehabilitation of pavement rutting should not be less than double the average rut depth or 5 % of the average rut width, along a pavement section . For the covering abstract of this conference see IRRD number 872978.

Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of an international conference held at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for materials Science and Technology) in Dübendorf, Switzerland, in July 2020. The conference series was established by the International Society of Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructure (iSMARTi) for promoting and discussing state-of-the-art design, maintenance, rehabilitation and management of pavements. The inaugural conference was held at Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2000. The series has steadily grown over the past 20 years, with installments hosted in various countries all over the world. The respective contributions share the latest insights from research and practice in the maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements, and discuss advanced materials, technologies and solutions for achieving an even more sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

Book Synopsis Rutting, Asphalt Mix-Design, and Proposed Test Road in Saudi Arabia by : MA. Al-Dhalaan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The drastic change in traffic characteristics due to a crash development program in Saudi Arabia has introduced new forms of pavement distresses. Rutting, which was virtually absent ten years ago, became the principal distress mode. A feasibility study was performed on the Dhahran-Abqaiq road, which is experiencing a severe rutting problem, to formulate rehabilitation alternatives. The comparative study indicates that the Hveem mix-design method gives relatively lower optimum binder content than the Marshall mix-design method and that some of the potential reasons for the rutting at the Dhahran-Abqaiq road were overasphalting, fine-graded mix, and poor quality control. In addition, test results indicate that a sulfur-extended-asphalt mixture can be utilized for reducing the rutting problem, since it provided higher stability values. Finally, to help solve the widespread rutting problem in Saudi Arabia, a decision was made to include test sections in the rehabilitation program of this road.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book excerpt: A project panel was established to provide guidelines for the rehabilitation of concrete pavements in Colorado. Techniques used by other state highway agencies were compared to the type and severity of concrete pavement distress observed in-state. Representatives from the concrete and asphalt pavement paving organizations were also invited to provide input to the study. Suggested methods are provided to renew the design life of deteriorated concrete pavements. Alternative methods of construction from which to choose are included along with examples for comparing life cycle costs.

Book excerpt: Developed to provide the cities and towns of South Dakota with guidance in the design of new streets and in the identification of appropriate pavement maintenance and rehabilitation techniques for existing streets. The guide addresses both geometric- and pavement-related issues. The geometric-related guidelines address right-of-way (ROW) width, pavement width, design speed, horizontal and vertical clearances, parking lanes, grades, curvature, superelevation, and intersection alignment. The pavement-related guidelines address asphalt concrete (AC), portland cement concrete (PCC), blotter (chip seal), and gravel pavements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt stripping is a fairly common form of distress for pavements in Montana, particularly for pavements that were surfaced with an open graded friction course. Currently, the technique for rehabilitating these pavements involves the costly removal of most or all of the stripped material, prior to the placement of an overlay. The goal of this research was to determine whether the stripped material can remain in place, serving as a structural layer within the rehabilitated pavement. This study has involved the construction of five test sites, which were incorporated into larger overlay projects. At each of these sites, stripped material was removed from a control section and stripped material was left in place for a test section, prior to the placement of the overlay. Leaving stripped asphalt concrete surface material in place during rehabilitation, to be overlayed with the new asphalt concrete, did not tend to make the rehabilitated pavement more susceptible to either stripping damage or load induced damage. Life cycle cost analyses should consider rate of stripping deterioration (in./year) to new asphalt concrete to be the same, whether or not stripped material is removed prior to placing an overlay. Overlay thickness and mix design methods for resisting stripping are the important factors for extending the life of a rehabilitated stripped asphalt pavement.
