Physical therapists (PTs) play a major role in the restoration of stroke patients' motor function. Most therapists use an eclectic approach by combining elements of various treatment approaches in developing their treatment plan. A therapist's implicit assumptions based on his knowledge, experience and clinical skills would then determine how stroke rehabilitation is delivered. Thus enters the problem on whether a consensus among PTs about the key assumptions underlying practice does exist. The purposes of this study were to investigate (1) physical therapy treatment strategies and outcome measures used for stroke patients in the Philippines, (2) the factors that affect Filipino PTs' choice of treatment and outcome measures for stroke patients, and (3) the attitudes towards introduction of new methods of treatment among Filipino PTs who work with stroke patients. It also aimed to determine if the theories underlying physical therapy practice across the Philippines match the treatment trends in major stroke rehabilitation centers in Metro Manila as indicated in the clinical charts. An epidemiological survey of 300 professional PTs working in hospitals and stroke rehabilitation centers within the Philippines was performed through postal questionnaires. Patient's charts from major stroke rehabilitation centers within Metro Manila were reviewed to look into the methods used for treatment, and compared these to the outcome of the survey. Undergraduate training was the most important factor influencing the current view of treatment. On the case study presented within the survey, interventions focusing on activity limitations (weight bearing) led the first choice of treatment, and function-based outcome measures were more commonly used to assess the treatment effect. These treatment strategies were based primarily on Bobath's Neurodevelopmental Technique. Based on the clinical charts reviewed, the most common treatment techniques employed were interventions addressing impairments (ROM and resistance training). Majority of the respondents indicated openness to new treatment strategies in stroke, particularly Carr and Shepherd's Movement Relearning Program. Although majority of the respondents still based their treatment plans from decades-old approaches like Brunnstrom's and Bobath's, no concensus among Filipino therapists as to the key assumptions underlying practice was established.
