Book Synopsis Bridge Evaluation, Repair and Rehabilitation by : A.S. Nowak
Download or read book Bridge Evaluation, Repair and Rehabilitation written by A.S. Nowak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation, repair and rehabilitation of bridges are increasingly important topics in the effort to deal with the deteriorating infrastructure. For example, in the United States about 40 percent of the nation's 570,000 bridges are classified, according to the Federal Highway Administra tion's (FHW A) criteria, as deficient and in need of rehabilitation and replacement. In other countries the situation is similar. FHW A estimates the cost of a bridge replacement and reha bilitation program at 50 billion dollars. The major factors that have contributed to the present situation are: the age, inadequate maintenance, increasing load spectra and environmental contamination. The deficient bridges are posted, repaired or replaced. The disposition of bridges involves clear economical and safety implications. To avoid high costs of replacement or repair, the evaluation must accurately reveal the present load carrying capacity of the struc ture and predict loads and any further changes in the capacity (deterioration) in the applicable time span. Accuracy of bridge evaluation can be improved by using the recent developments in bridge diagnostics, structural tests, material tests, structural analysis and probabilistic methods. There is a need for an international exchange of advanced experience to increase the research effi ciency. The Workshop is organized on the premise that the exchange of existing American and European experience in the area of bridge evaluation, repair and rehabilitation is beneficial for both parties involved.
Download or read book Bridging the Gap written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers information on the conditions, age and costs to repair and modernize the nation¿s 590,000 bridges as well as key examples showcasing new inspection and construction technologies. Key findings: (1) Within the next 15 years almost half of the nation¿s bridges will exceed 50 years of age, exceeding the life span for which they were designed. Even now, one in five are over 50; (2) With age comes decay. One in four of our bridges are rated as deficient, either in need of repair or in need of widening to handle today¿s traffic; (3) New estimates show that more than $140 billion will be needed to fix them; (4) Soaring construction costs have whittled away the ability of states to address preventive maintenance and new bridge construction. Download or read book America's Bridges??? written by Evan N. Kantwell and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has anyone actually seen a bridge being built in America? This editor has travelled for almost 40 years in America without seeing a single one being constructed -- and few even being repaired. Some critics point out that America has built excellent bridges in Vietnam and Iraq which indicates that the knowledge base remains intact. Others say that individual states cannot feed their armies of bureaucrats and fund their plush pensions and health care programs and still expect to build bridges. And the federal government cannot be counted on for much of anything useful. This book presents recent reports focusing on this part of America's crumbling infrastructure.
